    Dad's Army was the comedy soundtrack to my childhood. 
    I still enjoy watching the repeats on BBC2 on a Saturday evening.

    We might have been spared that. Apparently the show's producers wanted David Jason for the role and had promised it to him. They were forced to go back on their word though because BBC boss Billy Cotton, son of Red Red Robin maestro Billy Cotton, insisted that Dunn get the gig.

    Dunn was only 48 at the time and David Jason was in his mid-thirties when he played Blanco in Porridge. Amazing what can be done with skilled make up artists on the job, Chizz.
