POST MATCH THREAD : Charlton Athletic Vs Stevenage Boro : Easter Monday 1st April 2024 : KO 15:00

First half was pretty uneventful, with a lot of balls ping-ponging about in midfield, and chances for both sides being few and far between. According to Scott Minto at half time, our XG was 0.05 while Stevenage's was 0.03, which gives you some idea of the paucity of chances. Probably the event that got the home fans most excited was the controversial booking of Tennai Watson a few minutes before the end of the half.
Stevenage brought on 3 subs at half time, and had some much better chances. We brought on Chuks on the hour mark but took off Alfie, and while we did create more, couldn't convert. But at least we kept a clean sheet for once.

Final score 0-0

Incredibly boring. New manager bounce looks over.

    Difficult watch.

Only 7 points from the relegation zone. I hope the squad and players don't feel that it is job done.

Regression to the mean under Jones.

Two months of good performances and then back to the poor displays we're used to.

Need a complete rethink in the summer. None of this 'we're only 4 signings off' nonsense.
Need to put a "1" in front of that "4".

That was crap. Two poor teams playing a very poor game of football.

I know we all know, but we really do need a massive injection of quality in the summer. A midfield with that little quality/creativity is getting you nowhere near promotion.

4 signings ? Any luck the first ‘sign’ says exit and they point some of those to it

Out of context a clean sheet, which we've struggled for so much this season, against a side pushing for playoffs to take us 10 unbeaten isn't bad. In reality, a really drab affair with a real lack of quality. We quite often played it out to the wing, Stevenage brought across two men and we had no one on the overlap, leaving our winger isolated with nowhere to go. Must have happened to Small about 10 times in the game and we never bothered to adapt.
8 points clear of relegation now, should be enough ahead of what needs to be a huge summer

This team would struggle to finish mid table with Jones in charge from the start.
First time I’ve agreed with the Dobson detractors. Works his arse off but distribution is awful. Time is right to go separate ways.
Thomas is also a shocking player. He looks more sound defensively but the erratic panicky hoofing of the ball has been a feature for weeks.
All in all, season over. Let’s hope Jones is being backed and a Powell style glut of signings has already been lined up.

Terrible game between two terrible teams. Terrible atmosphere. Terrible ref.

Massive changes needed in Summer but it’s going to be difficult with some of the shit we’ll still have under contract.

Some of these players may well be going or think they might. I hope the board don't think we can go into another season with two kids and Alfie up front, not over impressed with Lapado and we need an option wide. Can't fault that back three, I think REG is a very good signing at this level and I wouldn't mind keeping Bakinson. Lots of comings and goings hopefully but they need to get it right and in a big way.

    Small post-match interview.

    - Lads played well, could have been more clinical.
    - Gaffer been on at us to keep clean sheet and been working on this at training.
    - We dominated game in terms of possession and we had good spells.
    - Manager big on us defensively, he drives us and gets best out of us on the pitch.
    - Hopefully can get another win at home on Saturday.
    - Firstly I am a defender but I love going forward. Need to keep head down and try my best.
    - Loving it so far, everyone great. Manager, players, fans.
    - We need all support we can get in home stretch. Keep up the great support.

    Positives -

    A clean sheet
    Hector

    Negatives -

    No creativity
    No pace
    No midfield dynamo
    No width

  • So shit I’ve only just realised that mathematically it’s now impossible for Charlton to finish in a Playoff position

Boring game between two teams who will ultimately both finish mid table. Do think in January we would have lost that game. Just feel sorry that @Braziliance didn’t get to see Piergianni against Aneke!

    If the answer is Ladapo
What the hell is the question?!

Hector very good.  Probably because he is playing for a new contract.  Sadly!

    Jones post-match interview.

    - All positive, still unbeaten. Want to finish season strong.
    - We didn't use ball enough, and create in final third. Could have been better with the ball.
    - If we're playing like that this time next year, I haven't done my job properly.
    - Players giving me everything. Not many teams are beating us.
    - We're starting to build something but I want us to be better.

Not to worry, relegation is still a possibility - so something to play for!

Nathan Jones: “if we’re playing like that this time next year I won’t have done my job right”

I'd hope that If we are playing like that this time next season he'll be sacked.

    Clean sheet draw bore.
    Hector was good.
    Er, that’s it.
Nathan will at least now know how big a job he has on his hands.
