RIP to a man of principle. Anti-poverty campaigner, ironically however voted to make the UK population poorer by voting leave.

So a proper socialist then? Good man.

Tony Blair told him to "think the unthinkable" regarding social security/state pension. He did just that & was then moved at the next Cabinet reshuffle

    A man of principle. RIP.

Not sure how making the country poorer than it could be is socialism.

I think that is why it is a question.
I suppose it is possible to have principles but not be a ‘socialist’ depending on how you define the term.

I met him once and he struck me as being a man of principle
Not too many people of principle in politics nowadays.

Was from a political age when most politicians could be trusted to tell you the truth and not have a higher personal agenda. That’s from both sides of the political divide too. Agree or disagree with their views but I always felt they were at least genuine. I wonder what the likes of Frank Field or Lord Hesseltine or Ken Clarke make of what we currently see.

I don't remember this time you speak of, although yes it's/they've got worse.
This was why he stood out as one of the few conviction politicians who could be trusted.
Anyway, not a good idea to discuss on this thread.
    RIP Frank.

I was referring to him being anti eu, not any outcome of that.

He never appeared to be a 'my party right or wrong' politician but held to his own honestly held principles to depart from rigidly defined party 'lines to take' when his conscience demanded it.  Not a dull party hack like so many MPs nowadays, most of whom seem afraid of showing any sign of independence.  Well done Frank and thanks for your many years of service.
