Personally I found British Gas to be more expensive.  I switched to Octopus Energy.  They are both cheaper and their service/website is excellent.  Would recommend.

If you are on the energy price cap, you might find that sadly (and I don't mean this in a rude way!!) that you are the problem rather than the supplier.

Octopus do seem the best outside of that though.

My bills have gone up since I went to Octopus six months ago . They are all as bad as each other . I pay £241 a month for gas & Electricity for a three bed semi . I paid just over £200 when I was with Shell .

A good way to understand why your usage is so high might to be to get a smart meter, something I know you are against.

I pay £180 a month for a 4 bed detached. So something is definitely wrong there. Do you have your most recent bills? Sometimes companies up the direct debit to catch up with a deficit where the previous DD was too low?

  • Another vote for Octopus as well. Plus I think they are doing fixed price deals for new customers

I can't vouch for Octopus, but their adverts that feature customer calls do amuse me. I particularly like the one featuring the bloke with the alcoholic slur who prattles on for ages about how brilliant they are only to end up saying "that's what makes you one of the best energy companies". Only 'one of', wow what would he say if he thought they were the best? Also the one with the poor old northern boy who goes "Thank you for talking t' me". I always imagine this poor old bloke has just had his first social interaction in a month.

Keep in mind that all energy companies are affected by a 7% price cap reduction at the start of next month.

If you're looking for a dual fuel (ie gas and electricity) account and you're willing to pay by monthly Direct Debbit, this is a good tool to work out which is "best" for you.

Out of curiosity can people post what they pay per month and what size property they live in. It will be interesting to compare.

No no no no no. British gas has caused a great deal of stress to me and, separately, a friend. We have been able to compare notes.

I have come to the point of view that they are mascarading as a company but without integrity of process. Their reps both online and in the contact centre will say and do anything to appease the caller. There will be no actual follow up. E.g. high bills go unexplained, priority service register means nothing.

In my dad's case his annual bill estimate is £1200 yet his monthly charge that they collect is £15. No explanation given. Always difficult to get anywhere with them. I have to follow up again. I will be seeking to switch him to Octopus PDQ.

Btw £53 per month for my one bed flat @Derek1952. That's with octopus. Old school meters and economy 7 and all LED light bulbs. Relatively Low wattage tv too. Tv's can be high wattage and some people much really miss that.

Bear in mind also that the Price Cap is expected to rise in October by 12%

If one were cynical, one might suspect energy companies and the regulator of being a bit cute here by lowering the price cap for the summer, when it costs them very little, and then hiking it back up in time for winter when usage goes up.

Apparently my meter is recorded incorrectly on the Major database and my present supplier seems to be draging their heels to get it changed.
I cannot change to another supplier until its correct

I think getting a fixed deal is looking more attractive over the next few weeks
