I still don't think he will be sold and it will all be a waste of time all round...1 -

This was compounded by Jones leaving May out of the team and regularly subbing him.
If you thought it just a rumour you've not picked up on all the signs for 3 months.
It is rumoured that Huddersfield have now offered £1.2M.5 -

sam3110 said:I think the issue is you can't just spend £5m without it having to be balanced a bit somewhere somehow. Whether that's through player sales, increased pricing on tickets, more commercial deals and sponsorships, or through adding it on as debt or writing it off as equity, it has to go somewhere. So maybe selling May for more than a million helps to balance the books in that way.
Clubs can't just say "fuck it let's spend spend spend and to hell with the rules"0 -

My comments not everyone will agree, but that is a fact. Personally I am excited by that changes behind the scenes, the attitude of jones, and the fact the clubs attitude is no one is bigger than the club.
negative people will always find holes they are not happy with.. this will be a good season, and will be a busy couple of weeks!
Im a big fan of NJ and think in him we potentially have a very good fit for our club. I'm cautiously optimistic about next season, with or without May.
But that doesn't mean your two statements aren't contradictory, because clearly they are.
Either players CAN be improved and their performance and that of the team improved or they are to be judged only on the teams finishing position.
No amount of positivity from fans changes that.Don’t see how they are contradictory, facts are, the players haven’t been good enough, so doesn’t both me if they go, and the ones that stay, need to do better!3 -

I believe there are 6/7 retro shirts used in during the making of that video the other day.
Only one has been seen in use.4 -

You carry on spreading your messages and if it does not work this season ensure any blame gets pointed at all directions other than your source of your info, me I will carry on going/paying to go to games and supporting the team/club.3 -
We need a couple signings to cut this tension, come on chaps a lot of sniping and digging each other out here. Alfie May is a penalty merchant anyway!!! ;-)1

Social media has just lambasted the club for delivering the worst season in memory.
Would you like me to repeat that?
This is after 3 seasons of fractious muddled mediocrity, post just about surviving fiscal mayhem, not to mention the clutches of the judiciary, a 9 month trading embargo all following the removal of any vestige of ownership of the clubs’ former freehold assets.
Which bit did you miss?
The club needed a total rebuild in 2020, in 2021, in 2022 and in 2023. It needs one now. Any rebuild risks casualties. Have you looked at the totality of this squad? The issues are I suggest a great deal bigger than 1, 2 or 3 players.
I liked Dobson, saw Blackett-Taylors’ maverick production as random at best while May is precisely what you see on the tin. You are entitled to acclaim who you like but what are we talking about here? Dobson failed at Sunderland, CBT was signed off the street, while £250k acquired May.
I respect their efforts & talents yet not a shred of even passing Championship interest?
At this juncture having given a new manager a long term contract to rebuild the club I am inclined to let him do his job. As with any boss, do I expect to agree with even half of the decisions? No, After 40yrs in business why would I change the habits of a life time?
I share Jones coaching & management values. No, they will not suit everyone but if you are not true to your values you will fail. I will judge him by the nature of the squad he constructs over the coming days & weeks and the performances/ results over the season.
Would I prefer it to include Mr May? Until I have more clarity in terms of the direction of travel, yes. Do I understand from a palpably weak squad perspective why you might blow it all up and start again. I do.I am not sure on what planet anyone would suggest launching a promotion campaign on the back of Aneke (no material contribution in 2yrs), Leaburn (unlikely to contribute pre October 2024 after 10 months out of the game), Kanu (22 league starts). With Casey and Mbick it is a question of 2 reclamation and 3 development projects
This is not of Jones creation. It is a position he inherited.
May I therefore politely suggest in promotion terms there is a rather desperate need of not one but two significant additions to the attacking options. On the basis of upgrading the quality of the squad by acquiring players who can instantly contribute it suggests such additions will be most palpably be coming to compete with Mr May for the shirt.
Doesn’t mean May won’t win the shirt but better players means more competition for places and I’d expect any Manager to be open and honest with any player about the way forward.
If I repeat IF there are options for a 3rd quality addition which will allow May to pursue other opportunities then it seems only fair to explore them. Doesn’t mean it will happen, doesn’t mean it won’t.
Is it a risk? Of course it is. That is the nature of management. The real issue here is how do you expect anyone to prove themselves unless you empower and support them in their endeavours.
The world will always be full of naysayers endlessly lobbing contentious bricks of abuse from the sidelines. That’s OK.
The sidelines is precisely where they belong.5 -

The new management then said - well how good can he be ? - the team is nearly bottom of the Championship and we can get better replacements in - eg Polish Pete, Vetokele, Tucadean.
None of them proved to be anywhere near Yann’s level and those of us who had watched all his games knew that. It’s one of those ideas where there is always something or someone better around the corner.
May is a proven goal scorer ( twice over !) at League 1 level. Charlton would be stupid to sell him.No one knows if he’ll go and no one knows how it will pan out, but with all his goals last season, we came 16th and finished in our worst ever league position. We must improve the squad and if selling May is the only way we can do that then so be it. I’ll be gutted to lose him, but Jones knows what he wants and I have far more faith in him then anyone else who have been running this club for the past 8-10 years.
I don't think selling him improves our squad.
He wasn't the reason we finished 16th but we must certainly would have finished below that position without him!
When I brought that up later in the season, you said "Why wouldn't I have been happy, we signed the league's best goalscorer."
I've no doubt the team needs to function as a unit and Jones needs to buy the ingredients if we want him to make the dinner, but whether we're going to be successful or not, Alfie May is a great player and character and many people will be gutted to see him go.The two forwards the looking to bring have been mentioned on here, they are at a good age, and will improve under Jones, if we get them both, they will cost us more than May’s fee.
It maybe a CL in-house joke but the sentence "I'll wait to see them play in a red shirt before commenting" has never been truer.
We know what Alfie May can do. Any new signing may be mustard but then again....may not be.
I'd rather stick than twist.I totally agree with you, but Jones is in charge this window, and has been planning since February, he is a vision of what he wants the side to do, and what type of player is required to do that, so we have to trust his process3 -
Trust in Jones, he has more experience in football than everyone on this forum put together.13

It's May potentially being sold on top of throwing away Dobson in January.
Two best players being sold/let go based on a bunch of ifs and maybes.

I’ve not seen us come out and say he’s not for sale. Quite the opposite, we’ve almost utilised Rich Cawley at the SLP to welcome another offer.0 -

The alternative take on May that I’ve not seen is Jones thinks the squad needs a significant amount of change, Charlie Boy and co agree but the budget to do that just isn’t there. So an injection to fund it is needed, Leaburn isn’t in the position to be sold for max value yet, so May is the most likely and easiest to attract interest. He’s not made great money in his career so if new improved contract offers are coming his way he’s making hay while the sun shines.Regardless of that, I also don’t think Jones sees May as being vital. This could be one to suit all parties but the fans.16

Wouldn't it be amazing if this all turned out to be an elaborate 4D chess move from NJ by letting a transfer saga play out all throughout the summer, letting Hudds continually think they are "this" close, and them wasting a significant amount of time, energy and resources on signing Alfie, only to then pull the plug on deadline day so they end up scrabbling about for a back up option at the last second. Meanwhile we hoover up the talent whilst they are distracted and to really underline it AM lines up the very next game with the captains armband on and a big grin (and maybe a few k a week pay rise in the back pocket for his trouble)
It's what I would do !

I think every single Charlton fan will be gutted to see May go, but as I have said Jones can’t guarantee he will be the first name on the sheet, May doesn’t like it, a club is willing to offer decent money, for a player that isn’t getting any younger, and if we get promoted next year, he would likely be surpluses to requirements. The two forwards the looking to bring have been mentioned on here, they are at a good age, and will improve under Jones, if we get them both, they will cost us more than May’s fee.
Id argue its a minority, the vast majority of the time we sign players and i've never heard of them bar a few, May for example funnily enough. The vast majority of the time most have to have a snoop on wikipedia before posting about them.1
