    It’s only a friendly - don’t get excited.
Real season is 2 weeks away - er er don’t get excited.

90+ mins without winning a corner and only 2 shots on target.
This was drab and not a single new player stood out for me.

CM in the crowd - told him we just need May and Dobson, then perhaps we will stay up.
    Please give it a rest

The posters who are so quick to jump on people who merely point out it was a shit showing, have a listen to Jones. He says exactly what most have said - forget the result, but it was a concerning performance. You are allowed to give an honest assessment of what you see.
Agree it was a shit showing but also when we have performed better we get the it's only a friendly quotes. Need some sort of balance between the two extremes.

As long as they learn from this it won't all be a waste of time, sure NJ has a few ideas to give them at FT...
Might have been better to do that before we started. Still it's only a friendly & it's more to do with giving the players minutes. Why is it some players are given 60mins & others 30mins ?

Might give a few a kick up the arse which is no bad thing (Includes Management and Coaching Staff)

Get the bad performance out the way now and turn it around in the last pre season fixture next Saturday with a starting eleven that should be in for the Wigan game

Of course the result of friendlies does not matter. But ignoring the result...
Our defence cannot keep a clean sheet
Our midfield is not creating opportunities and looks lightweight.
Our (new) forwards are not scoring goals.

Other than that I'm getting rather excited about the new season.  :#

Perspective needed only few days ago we nearly beat Palace in an excellent performance.. but that game todays game and next weeks will
have no bearing at all when 17.30 comes along the week after … the players will switch on 100% and look a diff team ..get the niggles out the way now after all that’s what pre season for not about the results

I (sort of) watched the first half..........Boring.
Decided my afternoon nap was more important, so didn't bother with the second half.

Can't read too much into it as we did well against Palace and in Slovenia, but that was poor. Edwards played well, Coventry/Docherty less so. Is Terry Taylor just a better version of Coventry?
    Possibly a worse version ................ & I don't rate Coventry

I think that is a problem, don't you?
    No.

We've won 2, drawn 1 and lost 2. Take aside recency bias and its basically impossible to say which if any are more "realistic" omens of the season.
And the draw against a Prem team and other loss against Championship team.

All that matters is Wigan. If we looks like this, it will be concerning. But it will be concerning because we look bad in a league game.
We're going to lose games this season, we're going to draw games this season.

Just important we do it less often than everyone else.
My concern is that. We need to be commanding games AND scoring. It's what wins promotion! Too many games last season, we weren't outplayed, but we couldn't win either. That's what screwed us. If we'd have won the games that we drew, we'd have been in the play offs. We need a watertight defence if we aren't going to score many more goals, due to not having a goal machine. It's OK Jones saying that goals will be spread throughout the team, but which 3 or 4 in that team are going to get 10+ each, with another 3-4 getting 5 plus each?

I'm not gonna claim I know a league position for us after this pre season and whilst it's not the doom and gloom some are making it out to be, it is concerning that neither Godden or Ahadme have even come close to scoring in pre season. I hope they're saving it up but a little concerned we are going to be dull as dishwater to watch next season.

The biggest concern for me was that around 60mins our players fitness seemed to drop off a cliff. Wimbledon certainly didn't and looked fitter than us.

Big Eton Charlie said we are fitter this year though

Kanu and Chuks have been our most effective strikers preseason...

Pretty obvious that NJ is not aware of his best eleven yet. He may have some idea but will need to carry on experimenting to see which players gel and make his mind about what he needs to bring in. This situation will probably continue in the first few League games and the players need time.
  • No attacking identity, no pressing from the front.
Playing with wing backs and never getting them in possession of the ball in final third to create anything.
a back line that still has Gillesphey in and a midfield that got given the run around by division 2 team

I think that the biggest learning from today’s game is that we needed at least another 2 pre-season friendlies. We’ve definitely been light.

I lost track of most subs because no numbers on X, but thought our midfield starters were pants. Berry had a few moments but they were all lightweight and brushed aside. Anderson is a must, and perhaps Zach or REG in holding role.

CBs passed it to a marked WB, but mainly just hoofed it long. Didnt notice ZM being culpable for 2nd, but seemed the only one looking to bring it out or pass forward.

I think we can all see it was a poor performance and of course we need to improve. But to make comments on where we'll finish in the league and write off players/the squad at this point is a bit excessive. I'm hopeful today has been the kick up the arse we need.

I think two posters commented on where we will finish both were clearly joking.
Negative comments when we play badly are not surprising.  Even more so after the last few years.

I didn't watch or follow the game as I couldn't be bothered. Sounds disappointing but my overall expectations based on the squad before today were not as high as others.
I think we have a decent squad but need to add 3-4 top L1 players (in addition to a keeper) to really stand a chance in what will be a tough L1 this year.

Said it before & will say it again Alfie May will score more on his own than those two put together.

How much will that (if it happens) be down to the service each of them get vs their ability?

Think we need to stick with jones now no sacking even if we’re bottom half at Christmas but think with the selling of May and a bad start we will probably sack him and start the groundhog again. Although I think it was a mistake to sell May. We need to let jones have a longer reign than the previous managers.
He has a long term contract, probably fairly well paid and we have no better prospects. Absolutely no chance he’s getting sacked any time soon unless the situation is insane.

Wasn’t expecting much today, pre-season friendlies are training sessions that we pay to observe. But damn…

Did you not see Dartford , Godden header today and Ahadme header on Slovakia …. How many goals did May score in pre season in fact he did  not score till the 4th league game and that was only a pen
