Only one I can see going out any time soon is Fraser that will allow us to bring in a midfielder and maybe a centre back if Ness goes, never known us to have so many options at this stage of the season.ross1 said:All this about bringing in 4-5 players, NJ said, apart from a goalkeeper now Isted has gone, there will be no more players coming in until we can get some out. So that’s five pre season friendly matches are not one clean sheet, same old same old.2

No dominating centre half

No imposing goalkeeper

Was our defence better second half of the season? Be interested to know what the stats say.Yann897 said:
Yes our defence was shocking last season but think people are forgetting we brought in Reg , Gillesphy , Ramsay and Small in jan so they’re almost like new signings themselves and our defence was better the second half of the season , add new keeper and Mitchell plus one more.Athletico Charlton said:Yann897 said:
Not a chance we get another 4/5 players in, I think people are over reacting a little bit to be honest over a bad performance, we’ve got a pretty solid squad now adding a bit more experience in goal can sometimes make all the difference adding more communication. Sometimes it can be as simple as that as I think we have a very good options all over the pitch.Braziliance said:Well one thing is for sure, we still need to add around 4-5 players of league1 high quality to have a chance.
Berry may take a while to get into gear, I still don't particularly understand what type of player Coventry is or wants to be, our only good centre back now appears to be new boy Mitchell, the rest look squad players for a good league 1 side at best.
I was happy with Ahadme and Godden replacing May, as least the club decided to spend the money, unfortunately, May will start the season hot, and neither of those two look ready to put out the almost guaranteed 20 or so goals Alf would have gotten us. Ahadme in particular concerns me who seems miles off it.
We still appear to be a bit weak. All the fitness in the world won't mean anything if we can't out muscle sides or, be so technical, that people can't get the ball from us, we don't appear to be either of those types of teams. Very jack of all trades, master of none type Charlton side, again.
These friendlies are important, particularly the later ones. They can build momentum, get players finding a bit of form, the manager can get ideas for the next competitive fixture, they can build winning mentalities. I don't believe we are ticking any of those boxes currently, and minutes in the legs isn't good enough for a professional football club, that's non-league stuff.
We should be showing signs of a team who are ready to play together, and displaying at least a bit of skill. The lack of technicality in the team is worrying.
Be interesting to see how we fair against Pompey,Only last week we were beating a premier league team until the 91st minute whilst being solid and playing good football, like Jones said yesterday and Curbs before him don’t get to high with the highs and to low with the lows. I think we’re in a pretty good position and feeling confident about Jones in charge. I think he’s problem right now though is too many options and the squad being too big he needs a midweek friendly for the fringe players I’d suggest. I’ll be happy if we bring in Begovic and Potts early next week as that’ll settle some fans down.
I agree we won't bring 4-5 more in. But we definitely need to. We all agree we need a new keeper, NJ has said it enough, so that will happen.
Our CBs last season were shocking, we needed complete change there. We have bought in one. We should have got rid of Ness and Gillesphy and bought in 2 more. Jules and Forino would have been amazing and both remained in L1 after their free transfer moves this summer.
Centre midfield has lots of similar players, nothing creative and no goals. We need one creative player there as an absolute minimum. Two more would have certainly been better!
That would be 4-5 new players and would have given us a proper chance.
We will lose £10M more this coming season, on top of the £22M or so the owners have already stuck in. Without promotion that will mean £32M for a L1 squad and no land assets. They won't hang around long with that record.0 -
You can’t judge that yesterday our defence kept a clean sheet when the second team come on they conceded two …buckshee said:So that’s five pre season friendly matches are not one clean sheet, same old same old.2 -
With that system and midfield, we need the attacking threat to predominantly come from the wingbacks, which means Small and Ramsay.1

I haven't forgotten bringing in Gillesphy. It was (yet another) bad decision he is at best an average L1 player and needs moving on. Ramsey and Small don't improve our CB's who remain shocking. REG we have barely seen but I would keep with Mitchell and Jones. We still need 2 more imo.
Our defense at the end of last season (post Jan) let in a few less goals but still conceded every game near enough.2 -

With Isted going I expect we'll sign a GK (Begovic?) this week. Time will tell if the new GK is what we need, but clearly Jones has wanted a new first choice all summer.
Bishop being on trial showed we want another CM. Hopefully Fraser moves on sooner than later as that could be what's holding up us being able to bring another CM in.3 -

If we don't have a creative midfielder than can pick a pass, to feed to strikers, it'll be lump ball every time, which in league one with massive defenders, will get mopped up. May was small but created his own space and could find the net. I think our forwards are going to need more chances than May would have, to achieve as many goals. Who in this side is a playmaker that not only can read the game well, but that can execute the plan. Getting those 30 odd wins this season is going to be tough if we can create said chances.J BLOCK said:Lack of attacking threat, particularly creativity and pace were, IMO, the biggest problem last season (even more so after CBT left). I don’t think we’ve done enough to remedy that and I’m surprised we haven’t signed at least 1 high class creative midfielder.2 -
I only saw the 2nd half on CTV which was disappointing. People say we shouldn't judge on friendlies but it is all we have at the moment. I have not been a fan of NJ but was coming round to his ways, but after Saturday what are "his ways" it seems to be lump the ball down field and hope someone runs onto it, I thought "his way" was wingbacks down the flanks feeding the centre and high pressing - this was not in evidence during the 2nd half.
For me the jury is still out0 -
Didn't we have the second worst defensive record in the league, only behind Carlisle who finished 16 points off safety? I assume that must have been on clean sheets.se9addick said:

Despite having great defences (better than 4 of the top 6), Lincoln, Blackpool and Stevenage all missed out on playoffs because their goals scored was similar to ours.
So it seems a bit of both is needed, score more, concede less.
To achieve those top spots, we need to turn domination into wins. The 19 draws fecked us last term. To get a solid top 6 spot (probably not top 2), half of those would need to be wins.
Maybe Jones is right. Forget fancy football, just batter teams and they will eventually concede. I thought this team might have more guile than that shown yesterday.
If Jones thought this team was oven ready, to impress, he's probably now thinking that he has a Bernard Matthews Turkey roast, and not a butter basted Waitrose one, that he ordered. Perhaps he will let the purse holders know that he needs to nip out and buy something else, as the dinner guests won't be impressed.
Wonder if he's a teacup thrower!

FYI Portsmouth lost to AFC Wimbledon there second to last pre season game as well.
Didnt seem to affect them winning the league….16 -
I just wish Jacko could find himself a club deserving of his style of football, AFCW and Jacko are like chalk and cheese... 🙄0

I didn’t follow any of the match yesterday because I was watching the U23s play. Only listened to Nathan Jones interview and just IMO, if that was a league performance I would be expecting Anderson & Kanu both to start the next game because they give the required levels of aggression that Jones likes.
Cant read to much into that friendly, because dont think that will be 11 who start against Wigan in the league3 -

Unlike the one that lost 2-0 at L2 AFCW basically outplayed? Taylor is over 6ft unlike the current incumbents also young (CC apart but he has shown nothing in 20+ games and has no ability in the air). Godden probably put in more tackles yesterday than our whole midfield combined. Only chose Berry over Anderson because he is an NJ pick and Karoy's passing deteriorated when he got tired, about the hour mark. REG could also be a better option than Saturday's incompetents.Southbank said:

I wish I lived within an hour of the Valley, because if I saw CC in the starting line-up, I wouldn't turn up.1
