"We need to be like Peterborough and be signing the hidden gems!"
"WHY are we signing Dixon, Ahadme, Mitchell we need more Champ level players!!!1111!!!!!133!!"
"Why are we singing Godden, Berry, Docherty and Begovic! They're past it! We need to be signing the next Begovic!"
ad infinitum20 -
Yann was 29 so just about the right side of 30.Radostanradical said:
It all depends on the hunger of those players "on the way down", Arter was special case as believe he was actually injured but yeah some havent worked for us.North Lower Neil said:

Individually look like reasonable signings, but Godden, Berry, and potentially Begovic are all over 32 so we could be working on those positions again soon rather than building on the signings being made.
Docherty makes more sense given he's still experienced but should have a good few years left in him yet.
Hopefully I'm wrong and they provide that bit of experience needed sometimes!
However people like Pratley did workout and when Yann signed for us he had flopped at Leicester and was the wrong side of thirty and it worked out.
Admittedly Yann was no Piotr Parzseyek though
Pedantic I know!0 -

When you say he had a decent season in the Championship last year, what are you actually basing that on?Rothko said:

I'm not entirely unhappy with Mannion & Begovic as our GKs. I'm just pointing out that it's very arguable Begovic had a poor season.

I read a comment that "Begovic gifted Plymouth 2 points" so looked up the game.
The goal is at 1:45 for anyone interested.

6th best clean sheet record in the league, 12th best save percentage in the league, 11th best saves per 90. Stats look good, in what was a shit QPR team under Ainsworth.Chunes said:

He likes a flap at corners… did similar away at Millwall and at home against Cardiff, both ended up costing his team points.Chunes said:I read a comment that "Begovic gifted Plymouth 2 points" so looked up the game.

Well I respect my longstanding QPR mate who has been going there as a season ticket holder for nearly 60 years. He said
" No, I don't rate him. Too old, slow coming out and can't get down to shots".
Good enough for me.7 -
I said "QPR fans don't seem to agree with the idea he had a decent season." Short of contacting YouGov for a mass survey I've shown that to be true.Rothko said:

You seem to be conflating their view with mine. You think I'm saying he's shit because they're saying he's shit. I don't get it.

We have to give him a chance - we don’t have any other real choice. Unfortunately we’re onto our 3rd/4th choice option at this point.
Jones is convinced he doesn’t want loans, especially in a position like a goalkeeper, but a year of Steer/Rudd would leave me feeling a lot more positive than a year of Begovic.

It’s been a weird summer for goalkeepers - missed out on Davies, missed out on Sinisalo, Birmingham sign two of them themselves, Millwall only ended up needing one because of what happened to Sarkic. Other examples I’m forgetting right now. Just feels like there’s been a lot of goalkeeper movement around the EFL this summer.
Sometimes the chips fall the way they do and we haven’t got one of our primary targets. Perhaps we’ll get, hopefully, our long term no. 1 goalkeeper next year. Fingers crossed Begovic is good enough to plug the gap in the mean time.5 -

What about the six crappy defenders, don't they take any blame...🙄
signed :..A Begovic...0 -
Love how he completely misses it unchallenged, then flings his arms about like it's someone else's fault 😂Chunes said:I read a comment that "Begovic gifted Plymouth 2 points" so looked up the game.

I'd certainly rather have Begovic coming in than continuing with AMB/Isted. Agree it's clear we missed out on our top targets and Begovic feels like that 1-year stopgap to get us to next summer and a more permanent GK signing. We could probably do a lot worse.Callumcafc said:It’s been a weird summer for goalkeepers - missed out on Davies, missed out on Sinisalo, Birmingham sign two of them themselves, Millwall only ended up needing one because of what happened to Sarkic. I can see us talking ourselves out of this guy before he's even signed the contract…😏4

The Begovic 'saga', reminds of when Ben Purrington left, and we went what 2 seasons? without a replacement, surely he can't be short of a shilling, wonder if he's changed his mind / failed a medical, i thought if it was going to happen , it would have been announced yesterday.

I'd rather us go down the loan route, I wouldn't mind someone like James Trafford or Dean Henderson from one of the top clubs. Begovic won't be cheap and I'd rather the budget go on other areas, particularly when many young keepers in the Big 6 are more than capable of League One.
It's crazy to think that we had James Beadle and had to let him go.28 -

Don't follow the logic there. We've had a lot of 'ever present' players who turned out to be nowhere near good enough?killerandflash said:
He was basically ever present for QPR last season, which hardly suggests someone who was terrible.Rothko said:
Ever present in the Championship sound fine to me for a keeper. 45/46 games to be precise in League.
So much negative spin is getting tiresome regarding this situation.2 -

The game where for some reason Ipswich played in red and Charlton played in blue and it took me a while to realise it. I seem to recall at one point i was thinking that Ipswich player who looks like Rickie Holmes is running rings around us.2 -
I think the potential Begovic signing is very much to stop us being in the situation we were in last season where we had two senior keepers, neither of whom were any good for us. One fell to pieces (though I never understood how he stayed in ahead of Wollacott once he was fit again the season before) and the other didn't manage to show he was at the needed level. They obviously like Mannion but he might not be at the level required and we don't want to have to play AMB so we're going for a tried and tested keeper who can drop away if Mannion proves to be up to it. Jones has often not had a 46 game keeper in his management career. We'll have to be very unlucky even for us to have Begovic turn up past it and Mannion turn up useless.3

Please put a 😁 when you suggest Dean Henderson or James Trafford 😂 for a loan to a team that finished in the bottom half of the 3rd tier.

Should try and get Bernardo Silva and William Saliba on loans too whilst we're at itElliotCAFC said:I'd rather us go down the loan route, I wouldn't mind someone like James Trafford or Dean Henderson from one of the top clubs. It's not spin at all, it's just a point, irregardless of the player being discussed.

I wouldn't want him in my team mainly because his too old. I know 'keepers can go on longer than outfield players but I wouldn't be signing anyone over 34 in any case3 -
I don't mean them two specifically, I mean a highly-rated young keeper who is ready for men's football - just like the career paths of James Trafford (Bolton), Dean Henderson (Shrewsbury), Aaron Ramsdale (AFC Wimbledon), etc.soapboxsam said:ElliotCAFC said:I'd rather us go down the loan route, I wouldn't mind someone like James Trafford or Dean Henderson from one of the top clubs. That seems like a more attractive proposition than the price of Begovic - who I would still be happy to see sign.0 -
QPR must have quality defenders and shit strikers then because they had the 8th best goals against last season.
Imagine where they would have finished if they had a better goalkeeper and some decent goalscorers.3
