Anyone else think it's odd that a club loans a player for a season but recalls the player to loan them to a higher league if they are doing well?
of this is to become the norm, maybe loans should be up to January with an option to extend

He's done well for himself... Showing the promise that saw him mentioned as one to look out for whilst here - Academy has done something right in that sense.0

I honestly can't see the advantage in moving a keeper mid season if they are doing well. They are in good form, guaranteed game time, will have the support of the crowd on their side. I also don't think in goalkeeping terms there is that much difference between the Championship and League one.
The Sheffield Wednesday keeper is doing really well at the moment, so I can't see him just shifting him out of the team straight away.1 -

Beadle is 19, so would surely benefit from being in a relatively low pressure environment at Oxford more than a high pressure relegation scrap at a bigger club?4 -

Saw him live in the FA Youth Cup back in 2021 and could just tell from watching him he was destined for big things. Sometimes you just watch a player and can tell they've got "it". Although I think of the starting XI I saw that night at Worthing it's just Adigun, Huke and Bower that haven't made a first team appearance.1

Following a successful loan at Wednesday last season, James is returning on loan for another season with them from Brighton. The interesting thing is that they have also signed another of our former keepers, Ben Hamer, on a free but as the latter is 36 and Brighton wouldn't send him out if he wasn't getting game time, I would be very surprised if he isn't first choice, initially at least.
As many know, both James and his brother, Harry, were with us from the age of 9 through to the Academy and left us within a year or so of each other. Harry was released and secured a contract at Colchester but never played more than a couple of minor games for them. Following a couple of loans, he has now signed for Aveley who are in the National League South.
Same Charlton Academy but ended up at much different levels with James being tipped as a potential future England keeper (played at all levels from U15 and was in the England U20 squad last season). Knowing Harry as I do, he will be absolutely elated for his brother should that ever happen but there is no doubt that they both, once upon a time, had the very same dreams. Such is football.4 -

Hadn't given this bloke much thought. Didn't realise it was him in goal for Oxford when they beat us at The Valley last year until after the game either. Looked decent, but his celebration in front of the CE after they scored left a bit of a sour taste in the mouth once I realised who he was! Especially from a lad who'd been at the club since the age of 9. Can't say I'll be cheering him on as "one of our own" if he makes it to the top tbh.2

I might if we get some sort of sell on as an ex academy player0 -

James wasn't just with us from the age of 9. He and Harry didn't just come through our age group system. With their Dad they followed us home and away.
I also believe that James signed a contract so we did get a fee instead of having to go to a tribunal for a reported £400k-£500k. And there is a sell on fee mentioned as taking the total fee to £1m, making it the biggest fee ever paid for a keeper of his age at that time.
So, he was an 19 year old lad got caught up in the moment of celebrating a goal for the team he was playing for at that time. If one of our players refused to celebrate a goal against one of his ex-clubs would he be in the sin bin too? Equally, it's like saying to a former Kent bowler that he shouldn't celebrate a wicket because he used to play for the County he was facing. Let's take all the emotion out of sport shall we? Will those that bemoan about that celebration completely erase him from their minds or mercilessly complain if a paper or commentator doesn't mention that he came through our Academy? After all, as stated above, he isn't "one of our own"/
I would like to think that we are a bit more understanding than that especially as the whole family are Charlton regardless of who they currently work for now. Whatever people think. Harry and James are very much "two of our own". See below.

Think I saw one of his last games for Charlton down at Worthing in the FA Youth Cup, could just tell he was destined for bigger things , a year working with an experienced keeper like Hamer and under SCP can only do him good. Have some long term concerns with Brighton's logjam of keepers they keep on adding to but that's for the future.3

We've never done that with our keepers. Ask Pope, Elliott, Randolph (all internationals) and AMB who were all at least 22 before they had played more than a handful of games. Beadle would have been sent out on loan to a National League or League 2 team at best for two or three years to gain experience. It is only because he went to a PL club that he was in such demand - he started at Crewe for three months in League 2, then Oxford in League 1 for half a season followed by Sheffield Wednesday for the second half of that season in the Championship and again there this season. By definition, had he stayed with us he wouldn't be playing in the Championship in the same way as Gomez wouldn't have been playing in the Champions League. He's still only just 20 but is miles ahead in term of experience then he would have been had he stayed with us. The reality is, though, that his longevity with us is no different to that of Gomez.

Good for him. He is extremely well thought of in the game.
Like it or not but he is and was a Charlton fan, he grew up here. It wasn't a matter of "jumping ship" at the first opportunity. We, as a club, were an absolute binfire at the time and he had a chance to step up the leagues to a club with much better coaching and much better prospects.
He could have just gone and that be the end of it (like Largie Ramazzani and Jeremy Sarmiento did) but he chose to make sure we got a record fee for a player who had never played for us - and realistically wouldn't for a few more years.
He's definitely one of our own and I will be excited if and when I see him pull on the full England goalie shirt36 -

The likes of Gomez and Konsa did at least sign professional contracts with us, so we got more money. Indeed if Gomez ever leaves Liverpool for a big fee, it'll be a LOT more money.
