  • There were spells on Saturday where you could see the player we saw when we bought him. The challenge will be to convert spells to whole games but yes, he can come good. Definitely. Can though for me, not will.
  • All down to him. Leaburn is not too far away now from a return. A few more games to prove his place in the starting eleven before we could see Miles in his place, if he does not shape up.

That goes for them all, not just Ahadme
  • Anyone that thinks that chance pictured above wasn't a sitter need to give the old bonce a wobble. Most of us on here would have at least hit the target.
I was trying to think of an example of another striker we brought in who looked very iffy at first. And your handle suddenly reminded me.

Can anyone place this game more precisely for me? Arsenal away, early in the new season, i was there in person. Might have been the first season in the Prem. Wasn’t Andy Hunt’s debut, but he was new, first time I’d seen him. Clive Mendonca was injured. I think we lost, narrowly but we had nothing up front. He was completely anonymous but late on he had a fairly clear chance, ball at feet. He scuffed it badly, the ball trickled through to the keeper. That looked like a donkey effort. And it took a while, but we all know how well it turned out in the end, and who knows what might have happened if he had not developed that medical condition.

Just wanted to throw that in, especially when I saw the donkey word.

Hunt joined in the summer of 98, it was our first Prem season and we drew 0-0 away at Arsenal in our third league game.

He didn’t score many that season but things really clicked after relegation in the title winning season. He scored a few back in the Prem but never played after September 2000, really unfortunate after Mendonca didn’t play after December 99 (had to look those dates up!).
  • Bear with him think he will come good. Needs a goal and that may add to his composure in front of goal. Always works so hard for the team
  • He doesn't have a good strike on him, he isn't particularly quick, and he won't run past a man, so we need to play to his strengths, it's that simple really.

Give him time to make runs in the area, give him some consistent service, then we can judge him, until then, I don't think we can expect much. He was never going to replicate Alfie Mays consistency infront of goal.

Shrewsbury away next, and respectfully, they've looked shocking this season. Good chance to open his account hopefully.

Seems supporters have found their new scapegoat and he’s only 5 games into his Charlton career, some new signings hit the ground running, some take time to settle and some never really settle, he’s only had 5 games give him a chance ffs.
Our supporters do love a scapegoat and he's this seasons one.

I assume that was more aimed at those talking about terminating his contract, or others failing to recognise anything positive he’s done. Not the majority who are rightly disappointed in his performances so far.
Find me 1 person who has said they want his contract terminated. I'll wait...

He hasn't had the best of start.. But he certainly isn't as bad as some of the crap we have had up top over the years.. Give him a bit of time.. He will come good.
Totally disagree but agree with most of your posts so on balance I’m prepared to give him till the end of the month. Think that’s fair.

Of course no one wants a player to fail, but I didn’t say that. I’ve looked back and it was you who brought it up. I don’t think you meant it to come across as scapegoating but I can see why some may read it that way.

Call me mystic meg but I can foresee in 2 seasons time we will be negotiating canceling his contract by subsidizing the remainder of his salary. We've seen this story before.

I do sincerely hope he comes good, but nothing within his performances, statistical record, or previous fans' testimonials gives me any sense of optimism.

Yeah it was me. I certainly want him to do well. Don't think there's anything more nefarious behind my comment than that I think he's been shite so far, I hope that it works out, but I fear it won't.
  • I chatted to a Charlton Lifer after the game who said to me that he really wanted Gassan to do well, but ultimately a lot of us can see where this is headed. I have my fears too but continue to hope that he’ll open his account soon and go on from there.
As it stands I think Hylton’s experience/abilities could offer more to the team than what we’ve seen from Gassan to date and I’m hopeful that if he signs he’ll pass on some of his knowledge/dark arts to Gassan.

  • That's gloriously inconsistent there though, which is actually a very helpful illustration of my point. Ahadme wasn't brilliant by any stretch yesterday but he did affect the game, particularly in the first half. He was unfortunate in that Berry didn't make the most of his chance that Ahadme headed down perfectly for him and did well getting that ball across the face of goal but Godden hadn't read the movement and neither had anyone else. Conversely he missed a good chance in the box and failed to get a header on target that even if he had would almost certainly not have gone in. If Berry makes more of his opportunity then Ahadme's made a goal but he's at the mercy of another player's contribution there. Bringing people into play as you would say. So far on this thread since yesterday though instead of generally being given that balance he's been described as 'shit', 'dog shit', 'dog shit' again, 'fucking donkey', 'absolute carthorse' and perhaps most offensively of all 'Pawel Abbott'. That's what I'm talking about, that's an absolutely incredible overreaction to a player 5 games in but the pile-on is available so people are going to steam in as long as they can. It's unpleasant. The thing as well is that we all love Chuks and he'll be afforded grace when he misses, but the second he gets injured again people will be talking about cancelling his contract and having him medically retired. Chuks has been told not to go on here and other online Charlton content because of how nasty the things people say about him are when he picks up an injury. There's a real growing inability to talk about football with any nuance in the modern day, players get given 30 minutes to impress, 90 minutes to go on a list and 2-3 games before there's talk of cancelling contracts and just random sweary abuse. That's what I have a problem with, it's absolutely beyond doubt that people need a scapegoat or they can't properly engage with their football and that's crazy to me. At least under Powell when we were good it was poor old Alex Dyer who got the grief instead of the players, that was an odd time.
Great post. After that glaring miss (I'll ignore the header as the chances of heading a goal from the edge of the box are tiny) he was involved a great deal. My major issue was his lack of control, and falling over, but that could well be nerves. And the supply of decent passes from midfield isn't great. It may not work out in the end gor him, but some of the abuse he has been given is OTT. He won't get better with the crowd on his back!

  • What? Why is commenting on somebody’s performances “scapegoating” him? And who’s even looking for a scapegoat, we have 10 pts from 5 games so thus far there isn’t a huge need to hunt out a scapegoat as such, to date.

He’s a striker who’s played 5 games, 0 goals, generally been our worst player pretty much every match, and missed a few good chances. Why does commenting on somebody’s performances need to be labelled as scapegoating? Nobody’s got an agenda against him or any reason for one, I’m sure we’d all be buzzing if he banged a hat trick on Saturday and 25 goals this season. But so far, he’s been a fairly long way off good enough.

What about having a go at the players that can't put decent crosses in.

    Has he been getting abuse?

Problem with Wickham is he’d have been another striker who has a history of injuries - he even had a couple in his few months with us. Too much of a risk with Chuks and Leaburn here competing for the same role.

He offers a lot more, but there’s also no way he’d have been able to start 5 games in a row
  • Just looked at a youtube video of his goals last season:

    Goal 1 - header from a cross
    Goal 2 - headed home a corner
    Goal 3 - penalty
Goal 4 - unmarked tap in 3 yards out after keeper parried a shot
Goal 5 - tap in unmarked 4 yards out
Goal 6 - against us, headed home a corner
Goal 7 - against us, penalty
    Goal 8 - penalty
    Goal 9 - penalty
Goal 10 - header from a free kick
Goal 11 - got in front of a defender to side foot home
    Goal 12 - header from a cross
    Goal 13 - header from a cross

So in 33 games he scored:

    6 headers
    4 penalties
    2 unmarked tap ins
    1 good side foot finish

So realistically unless we get good crosses into the box or he takes penalties then he isn't going to get many goals.

If only Thierry Small could cross a ball.
  • If only Thierry Small could cross a ball.
If only any of our players could. Edwards getting injured was such a shame as I think he was probably Ahadme’s best hope for service

He's an optimist, I'll give him that.

Give Gassan time, he's got four years to settle in.
  • Let’s see if he can grab something against the Shrews.
It could get his season going, and in turn improve our prospects.
