Oldest Living Addicks

As we approach 1000 men's first team Addicks since we joined the league in 1921 a few questions have been raised.

Who will be 1000 is the obvious one but we can't see into the future.

What about the pre-1921 players?  We played from 1905 to 1915 and then from 1918 to 1921 outside the football league and Paul Baker is working on a book on that very important part of our history.

One other question is "who are the oldest living former players?"

Thanks to Ian Wallis @killerjerrylee for his work for the Ex-Players Association (EPA on this

We believe that the oldest living ex players are:

Heritage No.  Name                                  Date of Birth                     Year/s played   Games played

V246             Eric Gill                               03/11/1930                     1951                 1
V260             Gordon Jago                        22/10/1932                     1955-61          147
V247             Eddie Firmani                      07/08/1933                     1951-67          177

This list is in age order as Jago has a higher V number than Firmani.

Sadly, Albert Uytenbogaardt who was the oldest living Addick, has just died.  The EPA have announced that they were in the process of producing a Charlton Honour cap for Albert but that this will now be given to his family.

The plan is to present such caps, called variously legacy or heritage caps by England and at other clubs, to all our former players. I've seen the prototype and they look puka.

I think this shows just one of the reasons that an active Ex-Players Association is important to the club.

So far Ian has worked out the oldest 49 living former men's players which I can provide if anyone is interested or wants to double check the list is correct.  The difficultly is that not all the ex-players are active on social media, aren't in contact with the club and their passing may not attract media attention.

  • Slightly off topic, but I remember Ian Wallis as a player and subsequent Secretary of Addington Manor, in the London and Kent Border League. This would be from the late 1960's onwards.
  • Aren’t fans addicks too?

In fact, one could argue that the players are ’Valiants’ given that the first book listing them was called ’The Valiant 500.'

My Dad’s DOB is between Gill’s and Jago’s, and perhaps supporting us for approx 75 years means more than playing one game anyway.

Who are the oldest living addicks (fans)?
Tell you what, you do the work on the oldest fans and we'll focus on the oldest players
Well there was a fan last week who was 105 in the ground last weekend, would think he might be in for a good shout😀. Think there was a write up in the program as well.
    There was

I believe Mickey Stewart is older than Jago and Firmani
  • According to Wiki our ex player Mickey was born on 16th September 1932.
Excellent cricketer with Surrey and of course father of Alec.

  • Just to explain. The list that I prepared was intended to work out who were the earliest surviving former players, and my conclusion was that there were 50 still living out of the first 350,which covers everyone who played between 1921 and 1970. The list that I prepared was in the order that they first appeared at first team level, and the then leader was Albert Uytenbogaardt. Sadly, he passed away last week, which leaves five former players over age 90.

    Eric Gill              03/11/1930
    Mickey Stewart   16/09/1932
    Gordon Jago       22/10/1932
    Eddie Firmani     07/08/1933
    Peter Burridge    30/12/1933

I will do some more work on this when I need a break from working on volume 3 of The Valiant 1000, but I estimate that something like 600 of the remaining 650 are still living, which means that there are 49 +600 candidates for the new Former Players Association. Looks like a bit of work rounding them all up.

Great work, Ian. And there a few women - albeit a bit younger - too.
