Matt Penney (a left back!!!) - signed for Rochdale (p10)

After a season and a third without a club, Penney has signed for Rochdale in the National League.
My mate, who supports them, has asked if he's any good. I've broken the news to him gently, namely, that he's the worst left-back I've ever seen - and doubtless very unfit.7 -
His last game anywhere was for us on 28th February 2023. He had trials at Orient and Notts County in the summer but failed to sign for them and is now at Rochdale on a non-contract basis. Following the sending off of one of Rochdale's other players, he came on as a 60th minute sub and helped them to hold onto a 1-0 win at Gateshead.
Someone who has never struggled to earn a contract is Ian Henderson. He's now made 793 appearances and scored 205 goals including 17 appearances and 3 goals this season for Rochdale. He'll be 40 in exactly two months time. Penney, by comparison, will be 27 at around about the same time and has just 102 appearances to his name in almost 8 years as a pro.2 -

Also if he trained like how he played for us no one on earth is giving him a contract, so they must have seen something in him. As said i dont think any here will be welcoming him back with open arms but i hope it works out for him.4 -

Apparently he went from Rochdale to Altrincham in the last window.
It appears he hardly played there. I suspect his career will continue to slide down the leagues.0 -
Another one I'd forgotten. We really did sign some dross over the 3 or 4 seasons preceding this one.1

What a strange trajectory.
He joins the list of players who have gone straight from playing for us to playing in the National League.1 -

Surprised he's got another gig there tbh given two clubs in the same league decided he was worth 5 games between them before they both got rid.0 -
I can not believe that this lad has made any sort of living in professional football.0

Did you see his video?
It showed him being an attacking full back and taking the ball with him and laying the pass to a team mate. Was it an off field problem or he just lost the ability to focus ?
If Penney can overcome the issues which has seen his career nose dive then he can stop the decline.
