They are so expensive now these days. Was told since Covid the cost of potatoes has risen more than the cost of fish.

I just paid £5-20 for this - same sort of price as a sirloin steak. I guess that is why it's so expensive in fish and chip shops now.

We do have fish and chips every Friday, we just have to balance out the expense a bit more. It used to be roughly a 50:50 split, nowadays it’s probably oven fish and chips for 5 out 6 weeks, and the chip shop roughly every 6 weeks. It’s not the same though… :-(1

Something we've started doing recently, buying an extra portion of chips to stick in the freezer, which can be defrosted and reheated in the air fryer when f&c shop chips are required. Works quite well with Five Guys cajun fries too.6

Get some good fish from here https://wylde.market/. Fish day is tomorrow. Delivered in a day and fresh as anything. What is available depends upon what the fisherman has landed

Battering fish in batter and deep frying it is probably why we have an (underserved) reputation around the world of having bad food.1 -
Price list at the best fish and chip shop in Edmonton, Alberta (not a strong field, competition wise, but this place is decent, to be fair - especially for a place 500 miles from the nearest bit of coastline). 18 bucks Canadian is about 10 quid.0

Fish and Chips was an important part of my life in Charlton as a skinny kid in Springfield's and Elliscombe mount in Victoria Way in the 50s-60s.
I do remember the fish and chip shops with locally with some nostalgia, and the wait on a Friday night outside waiting to be served seemed like an age!. I remember when they used to serve pies, in a funny rotisserie type machine, not sure of the contents, but then god knows what was iN a saveloy!. It was near the cobblers in Charlton Village.
There was also one down on the lower road, which my mother used to bring home some chips, when she worked at the AEI of an evening. Not the best, but decent enough.
Personally I thought the best fish shop Locally was in Spray street Woolwich, very busy and used to go there with my grandmother, we are talking 1965 ish.
As others have posted Fish and Chips was an ordinary Working class meal, not without it's health issues, but the onslaught of a multitude of takeaways from Kebab shops to Chicken joints, and Pizza parlours I feel has not helped in it's demise.
Not sure living by the coast, with a fish market has helped down in Hythe, the local chippie buys from a large lorry twice a week. Apparently the local fish goes to the prime restaurants, yes you can buy it a Folkestone fish market, and to a lesser extent in Hythe, but they sell it as 'Fish and Chips', and its generally Pollock!........ unless you read the small print in many cases. it's what my mother used to feed the cat in the 60"s. Thanks you can keep it personally.
Went through the sustainability tripe 15 years ago, apparently we all had to be goodies in the staff canteen, so stopped going even on a Friday. Sandwich at the desk again!, or an Omelette on a rare occasion . So much for the subsidised restaurant at White City.
We had Fish and chips every Friday, like salad on a Sunday evening, and a roast for lunch, well that was the roster in our house, with new inventions as 'Vesta chow mein' and 'Angel Delight'...... not on the same plate mind, we were cultured, or so we thought in the flesh pots of 'Springfield Grove' ...... mind you god only knows what's in the processed food of today, made you look at a spam fritter again.

Two best chippies I have used are Elite in Lincoln, or Number 1 in Cromer.I now only air fry chips at home in beef dripping too. Takes it to the next level. Also need a cup of tea and gravyBelieve so, although never tried Harry Ramsden. Elite in Lincoln also tell you the farmer who grew the spuds and the boat the caught the fish. On a little chalk board as you walk in. Elite have two shops in Lincoln, one in Tritton Road has a licenced restaurant and always seems busy even though prices have gone up.Tried Battered Lemon Sole the other week, was amazing. Plaice next of the list, I believe it is in season at the moment. Before that would only really go for haddock.0

Then it became a chain / franchise with outlets everywhere, but I had never been to one until Blackpool away last January, where I went in the one by Blackpool Tower. In all honesty I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised - very good haddock and chips with mushy peas and bread and butter.0 -
When pubs started advertising "our famous fish and chips" and suddenly none just did ordinary fish and chips is when it really started to go tits up.0

Barbarian.
Think of all of the defenceless potatoes that were murdered for that. And the Martians, just so you could eat their cocks.0 -
That looks a tightly battered fish. I rate that.0

Fish a bit of a mingey portion and as much as I like curry sauce, you’ve got to have mushy peas with fish ya heathen.5
