In the same way that baked beans and hash browns should play no part in a full English, curry sauce should be nowhere near fish and chips.
Why no baked beans, that’s a nailed on constituent of any full English…..down our way?
I think they are a part of every full English now, but they are an import. A purist would argue that a true English breakfast should only consist of product made, grown, sourced or butchered locally - Sausage, bacon, mushrooms, eggs, fried bread, black pudding, toast and butter...
Beans are ok as long as they are served up in a ramekin, don’t want the little buggers touching my egg or bacon.
They will all mingle together once in your stomach.
Even if I don’t eat them?

Missed out bubble and squeak, agree with all the others.

    Behave, “served in a ramekin”
Whenever I get beans in one of those poncy little bowls I tip them straight out.
It’s a full English not fine dining

We generally use Sea Bream at Blendon or the Anchor at Albany Park. But lately, I’ve been buying M&S dine in for 2 Haddock and Triple cooked chips. Nice crispy batter and tasty chips. Also comes with a pot of minty mushy peas

I now live in central London and there doesn’t seem to be a decent local chippy. The fish n chips place are quite poncy like the Golden Hind in Marylebone which is quite expensive. I went to Poppies the other day and I think it costs about £17 for cod n chips. It was okay. But the other day I walked pass a new restaurant (Tony Page) nearby and the fish and chips on the menu was priced at £36 (looks a nice restaurant) and the burger and chips was £34. I’m sure they will add service charge on top. But it did get me thinking of what is the cost of fish n chips now outside central london?

Where abouts in Central do you live.

Have only used the mayfair chippy on North Audley Street but others that are well spoken of are seashell on Lisson Grove, Golden Union on Poland Street and a bit further away from the Marylebone area Kennedys on Goswell Road.

I notice now there is a chip shop on Villiers Street / Charing Cross. Not suggesting it will be great quality and no doubt aimed at passing tourists

It just reminded me that in my youth I always bemoaned the absence of a chippy near Charing Cross after an evening  on the beer. 🙂

Villiers street not actually close. I still miss my chippy in Brewery Road and the kebab shop by Plumstead station.

Anyway, what’s the cost of fish n chips in a normal chippy nowadays?

    Lovely. Love that area.

My local chippy in Bexleyheath is about 10-12 quid for fish and chips.

Off topic but a place i need to try for their sausage rolls, pies etc is ginger pig just off Marylebone High Street. Don't suppose you've tried that have you?

Ginger pig - difficult to walk past. Sausage rolls are excellent.

Do you ever go in the Golden Eagle?

I used to work round there and wondered if they still had the miserable looking fella behind the bar and the old boy on the piano for a sing-a-long twice a week.

Still remember a fair few years ago the absolute diabolical offering at the valleys new at the time fish and chip kiosk. Called it addick and chips. £7.50 for a curled up bit of batter with a thin piece of fish incased in it and a handful of tasteless chips. That was the last time I ever had any 'food' from the valley.

My recommendation might be a bit out of date as I Lived around the corner in Dukes Road from 94-96 but this was visited very often.

Russ the Chipper along Long Lane, Bexleyheath is good, served in a box as well.

Quite often does good price deals on cod and chips.

Ha. Went in there lunchtime for their £5.80 Cod and chips deal. Apparently it ended yesterday , even though advertised in the window.

    One lost customer.
  • My local chippy (Toffs) in Muswell Hill is excellent.

If it's advertised at the price then they're obliged to honour it.

The best drink with fish and chips is tea.
    Twinings English Breakfast.
