Remembrance request

Hi everyone,
I am new to the group and wondered if I could ask a rather unusual personal favour of other members.
My family have all been Charlton supporters for many years, as my grandparents, mum and aunt all lived there at various times.
My request concerns my late brother, Barry Ward, who was a lifelong Charlton fan, and passed away in September 2024, aged 75.
I learned yesterday that tomorrow’s match against Reading will also serve as a memorial to Charlton fans who have passed away in the past year. Unfortunately, when I phoned the club I was told that I had missed the deadline for my brother to be given a mention in the programme.
Could I please ask that anyone attending the match tomorrow kindly take a moment to remember my dear brother, a devoted fan, who despite living hundreds of miles away in Lytham still managed to go to Charlton’s matches whenever they travelled to the North West of England.
Our whole family would be extremely grateful for any consideration given.
Sorry for the long post, but I needed to provide some context to my request.
Let’s hope the winning run continues tomorrow!
Many thanks, Pete.

You could of course ask Charlton to put your brothers name up on the big screen or maybe you have asked that already.
RIP Barry Ward3 -
That’s a brilliant idea, I didn’t know that was possible. I’ve just tried phoning the club, but there’s no answer at the moment. I’ll keep trying.Lewis Coaches said:You could of course ask Charlton to put your brothers name up on the big screen or maybe you have asked that already.
RIP Barry Ward
I thought about using the online form, but don’t know if it would be seen and actioned in time for tomorrow.
Thanks for your really helpful reply.

Same for my dad (David Bennett) who was a north stand season ticket holder for many years, and took a generation of his grand children along who become addicks, who died in May. He was a Charlton supporter since during the war and remembered listening to the cup finals 46/47 on the radio. I forgot about the memorial.3

I have just emailed the club with both names.
The cut off date was 31 December so I wouldn't hold out too much hope. The programme will have already gone to print but there might be an outside chance for the big screen.
Sorry for your loss and RIP Barry and David.19 -

Thank you so much, that’s really kind of you. I finally managed to speak to someone in the ticket office, who will try to get a message to the lady concerned for both Barry and David (I hope that’s okay ChippyCafc)
Many thanks, Pete.

Hi again everyone,
Thank you so much for all the help and kind messages. It has reminded me that Charlton isn’t just a football team, but also a great community of supporters.
I haven’t heard back from anyone at the club one way or the other re a message on the big screen, but will hope for the best. All I know is that if it happens, it will be either pre-match or at half time.
I won’t be at the match tomorrow, but if a message is shown for Barry, I would be extremely grateful if someone could take a photo and post it on here, if that’s not too much of an imposition. I could then show it to the rest of the family, who would be so happy to know that Barry was remembered in this way.
Thank you all again and I hope we win again tomorrow,
Cheers, Pete.7 -
@PeteAddick58 if I remember rightly, last year the club put out a photo of the double page spread in the programme and video of at least some of the names scrolling up on the big screen. If they do I'll try to tag you in to whichever thread it ends up on, or link to it here too.

Thanks for this Henry. So sad to see so many names of people who were lost in the past year, notably Charlie Wright, who I remember well from my earliest visits to the Valley. RIP.Henry Irving said:From today's programme

Hi again everyone,
I have now been told by someone at Charlton that only the names on the list in the programme will be shown on the big screen at today’s match.
The crowd will be asked to applaud for all those who passed away in 2024, so if I could revert to my original request and ask everyone to remember my brother Barry at that time, I would be extremely grateful and it would mean a lot to our family.
Thank you all again for the help and kind messages.
A belated Happy New Year to everyone and I hope 2025 will be a great year for you all.
All the best, Pete.5 -
Anyone else google Sir David Varney?1

Sorry for your loss Pete.
Couldn't help noticing the name Barry in the list, second column, without a second name. Perhaps linked to the name above, hard to tell.2 -

It's Peter's brother - he did a tribute to him on his twitter account after he died a few months ago.LargeAddick said:Anyone else google Sir David Varney?

Very good spot, I missed that. Although I missed the cut-off for inclusion, I would love to think it’s a relevant sign. Thanks, Pete 👍swords_alive said:Sorry for your loss Pete.

RIP Barry. God bless your family in their loss.
However he has just seen the Addicks beat Millwall 6-0!1 -
Hi everyone,
It’s a miracle! After being told that Barry couldn’t be included in the memorial video, I received an email from a fantastic guy called James Bell at Charlton telling me that they have managed to include Barry’s name after all. I am so grateful to James and Charlton for going above and beyond to help our family. It means so much to us and when I am able to get a copy of the video, it will be a permanent reminder of the occasion.
Thanks to everyone, Pete.33
