He was only on for a few minutes. And is often trying too hard. But our record while he is on the pitch is outstanding and his strength scares opponents. I still want him on that pitch if we’re 1-0 down more than anyone else.
I feel quite the opposite : I don’t think he’s worth his place on the bench. If you think he ’scares’ opponents then he really is just a circus act (my 14 year old son was laughing at him yesterday).

He did cause a bit of a nuisance last night (and against Peterborough)but that’s as far as it goes. Take any fit, determined, heavyweight striker from tier seven upwards, and tell him to cause a nuisance and you’d get the same result. Aneke
doesn’t actually  do anything with the ball; he just bullies but with no tangible effect on the game.

Ahadme makes it pretty clear that this isn't the case. While Aneke may not be the player he was a few years ago, he still makes an impact when he's on the pitch.

If we're trailing 1-0 with five minutes to go, I'd much rather see Aneke coming off the bench than the strikers most other League One clubs (aside from Birmingham) have to offer from their benches.

  • Charlton version March 2025 played Charlton version Sep-Nov 2024 aka Barnsley. Charlton version March 2025 won 1-0 with a competent all around performance. Charlton version Sep-Nov 2024 aka Barnsley showed glimpses of a side that could develop into Charlton version March 2025 but have probably left it too late for this season.

err? how many Charltons what now?
  • Fitness levels throughout the team are amazing. Coventry looked stronger in the last five minutes than he did in the first five. The team is building up momentum, and when Charlton teams do that they invariably feature in a Wembley play off. Agree with some comments about seeing more of Gilbert (if only for his corner taking), and less of TC who was brilliant throughout but looked tired in mind and body near the end and needs to be nurtured. Jones and Macca are looking very solid (apart from that weird ducking by Jones in the first half). First time I have seen a free kick go under a wall for a goal since the days of Mark Kinsella!

Two. The current/actual Charlton; and the Barnsley version of our team earlier in the season where we often looked good and might do something but were often easily contained, frustrated and outplayed…and didn’t win

Bit of an odd one for me. Got on the wrong branch of the northern line, which meant much stress and missing the beginning of the game. So at least missed the tykes dominant start.
But wasnt feeling 100% and even Macca ‘goal machine’ Gillesphey’s goal didn’t change things. My watch told me my heart was racing (145bpm) and I sadly couldn’t put that down to the excitement of the match.
Lasted til about 70 mins but had to head home.
Heart rate was going from 38-165bpm, so saw the doc this morning. Atrial fibrillation confirmed after ECG at the GPs. Now on blood thinners and beta blockers. Life’s a b*tch sometimes. 😩 I imagine there’ll be quite a few Lifers with similar issues, so I’m in good company!
Thought they all played well in the second half especially. Listened to the commentary on Charlton TV after leaving, and the final whistle blew while I was at London Bridge Station. Another big three points, which again takes some of the pressure off for the Stockport game.
Was going to PM you but seems I can’t. Just experienced similar to you. I bought a new smartwatch and discovered my heart rate was around 145bpm. Had an ECG at the GP and been confirmed as having an atrial flutter. Was already on blood thinners but the dose has been doubled and I’m going on beta blockers too. Have had an echocardiogram too to ensure nothing else going on. If after six weeks the tablets have not brought it down they will shock my heart back into rhythm. Scary times. Difference is I had no symptoms at all and my consultant said that ultimately the new watch may have saved my life.

Glad your getting treatment and hopefully we will both be fully sorted very soon.
I’d drink to that Large, but I’m not sure I’m supposed to.
    Good luck with your treatment.
I’m thinking of upgrading my Fitbit watch to a smartwatch.
  • Well, it wasn't the greatest game to watch, and we never looked completely convincing, but it was a very important win and a great battling performance.

I am not sure what was wrong with our midfield in the first half, but Barnsley bossed it. We were giving them too much space and time and seemed slow to press. It improved second half, but still nowhere near our best performance.

I really think it is time to rest Luke Berry. He seems to have lost his shooting boots, and he gets knocked off the ball much too easily. The close range header miss against Orient was a shocker. Time for Alex Gilbert to be given a start I think.

I think we will need to play better than that against Stockport if we want to get anything from the game, but I think we will up our game for what is another crucial game.
Coventry was a one man midfield in the first half. Berry probably does need a rest but i was watching Docherty and just couldn't see how he was contributing. Their player who did the dribble and shot waltzed past him so easily and he hardly ever shows for the ball. There were a few times he was available for a pass and Ramsey ignored him. Not surprised as he nearly always goes backwards into safety. Again, not surprised as if he tries to retain the ball and go forward he normally loses it and he's never capable of an instant forward pass as it isn't til he's got the ball that he thinks what he's going to do with it. Sorry if that is a bit scathing and of course, its only my opinion but he's an incredibly limited player, despite his apparent upturn in form lately. I'd have Anderson back in Saturday in the box to box role.

Hi @JamesSeed I was diagnosed with AF in 2014. I've been on various tablets since, but they all do the same job.
I was discharged by my cardiologist in Aug 23, i just take a few tabs now, they've reduced over the years, you can lead a normal life, just need to be sensible, everything in moderation.

This team has some real steel about it now, and the credit must go to NJ.   Everyone has stepped up.    Ok, maybe Chuks is the exception, but maybe that's his fragility catching up with him?   But there seems to be a great team spirit.

Personally pleased that Macca has had such a good run.   I wasn't convinced in him either, but I didn't agree with the level of some of the criticism.

However, I particularly liked this one at the time, after he'd suffered a head injury and the physio came on:

"Physio: "Macca... Do you know where you are, who you are?"

Macca: "Yeah I'm a Footballer for Charlton"

Physio: "Yup, this is serious, lets get him off, he's clearly concussed".

    😂

Thank you @ForeverAddickted & welcome back Macca!

    COYR!!

Might need to avoid him getting any more head injuries, he might revert back to the Macca of old

Its great to see him doing well though, especially as he's not really put a foot wrong since that Blackpool error

Other Footballers could really have a downturn in form after something like that

The Lad cannot run, he cannot score. Sorry to say, he is not good enough.

That's the truth , it's not personal , he is not even Charlton Park level.

I have to say he looked like someone who didn't seem to know what to when he had the ball, Miles played him in and the hash he made of it was embarrassing, the best thing he is offering is holding the ball up. I still think he will be on the bench for the rest of the season just for his ability to add strength to the forward line.

Yeah, I felt bad for him in that moment. He looked like someone learning to ice skate.

    The negatives:

Just the one mainly, Chuks. I think even Gassan could do more, he looked absolutely useless. No pace, no control and doesn't even bully people anymore.

It's actually quite sad to see but he has no business even being on the bench in such an important run in, we need players who are going to come on and allows us to continue with the press like TC and Godden do, can't have a complete passenger.

Sorry if that's harsh (he will probably score the winner vs Stockport now)
I think Jones’ rationale is tiring defenders must look at a 6’4 battering ram like Chuks coming on at 75mins and think ‘ffs not him’. Agree though, it looks like the end of his career is near.
It would be fantastic if he helped us to promotion with these cameos then bowed out.
  • Maybe Aneke is thinking about his next contract
