I think with some footballers and competitors in team games, you can sometimes be a product of your environment. I don't think Gillesphey can hack it when he's in a shit team and his flaws are exposed. Compared to someone like Lloyd Jones or Ramsay who are so good they will still find a way to standout in a positive way.
Gillesphey is a complete system player and a very decent one. You can now see why Plymouth fans rated him in this league.
Stick him in a back 4 with an incompetent left back next to him and you'll see his worst, Sam Lavelle levels. Stick what is imo one of the best left backs in the league in Edwards near him, and have Lloyd Jones as his centre back partner, and you'll see all his qualities shine.
He will get a lot of respect from us when it's all said and done. Too many times the club have employed these types who go hiding, steal wages and disregard us. He's stepped up, adjusted to the environment and now he's a shoe in to start every week.
Slightly erratic, technically gifted left-sided centre back, initially given a lot of grief by fans after some ropey performances who has come through it, won the fans over and now he's even scored a free kick. He's finally gone full Naby.

Fantastic work Gillesphey 👍🏻
I totally agree, football is a team, no, squad game. Which is why I think as fans we are always way too quick to judge players when they come into the club.
MG is a good player at this level, I don’t think there’s any doubting that, but he needs a certain set up to thrive - and although you have individuals who can do well in bad squads they’re always going to better if squads play to their strengths as well.
Which is why the management, coaching and recruitment is so important.
And that’s without even going into the influence we don’t see behind the scenes towards the ‘culture’ etc.
It was a clever free-kick as I don't think the keeper expected Gillesphey to take it. I didn't expect him to. That may have contributed to him messing up the save.
He needs to put in a stupid-good tackle-assist combo, score a goal where he wanders into the box in open play and actually score a free kick before we start talking Naby levels of aura

Absolutely. For me it's the main reason why a lot of players do well before signing for Man U and thrive again after leaving. The whole environment there is a mess and it shows in many players performances.
Four goals and two assists in the league this season from 2,891 minutes on the pitch. We have three strikers on our books who, combined, have a total of three goals and three assists from 1,752 minutes. In fact, only Godden, Leaburn and Berry have been involved in more goals than he has in the league. And that's not his "day job".

Agree. From reading Gillesphey's quotes from Louis, he said to Berry he fancied it as opposed to just being the decoy. The set piece coach will be gutted as he was getting the credit but it was just a decision by Chuck and Macca while standing over the ball. 😃 Can you Adam and eve it 🤔
4 goals and 3 assists in 36 league games now. Very good for a centre back, especially one who used to get a lot of grief for not being good enough. I had a run through the stats to see if we'd had many other defenders get as good a goal contribution tally in the league as Gillesphey and going back to our return to the Football League in 07/08 there's only three other defenders who have contributed as much:
Patrick Bauer weirdly managed to hit exactly the same stats with 4 goals and 3 assist in 36 games in 16/17. Rhoys Wiggins got 1 goal and a ridiculous 8 assists off 45 games in 11/12, though he did that as an attacking left back rather than a centre back, and Naby Sarr, Gillesphey's spiritual king, got 3 goals and 5 assists from just 29 games in 19/20 in the Championship. Not bad company for Gillesphey to find himself in, all players who won us promotion from this level. 10 games left for Gillesphey to be involved in 2 more goals and be our most goal productive centre back since we became a basket case. Not bad going, especially given we're a side first and foremost built on being defensively stable rather than being free-wheeling and encouraging our centre backs to overlap and get in the box
He’s finally finding the freedom to show us how sweetly he can strike a ball with his left foot too. He’s strong defensively but also finds a lot of really nice passes that none of our other centre backs would likely be able to from that left hand side.
Macauley Gillesphey, won’t you score a goal for me? do do do da da do do do da da… Macauley Gillesphey, C.A.F.C’s number three. do do do da da do do do da da…

Born again hard. From being the one who always seemed to have a mistake in him he is showing consistency, assuredness and a threat going forward. Good luck to him
I was definitely one of his biggest critics but something has clicked with him now and I feel confident he won’t make mistakes. I was interested to see what would happen when Edwards wasn’t beside him but there was no change to his impressive form. Now we have the player that Plymouth fans raved about

Agreed and was very similar with him, he looks incredible now and IMO just as important as Jones with his ability on the ball. The lad must be so mentally strong aswell to come through his rough patch. Kudos to him.

Definitely set up for defensive stability, hence the 400 minutes without conceding until the late goal but...
Lloyd Jones attacked the box early doors against Crawley in a right attacking position and Josh Edwards did a run through the middle recently and a slightly better touch and he was in on goal. Macca has been transformed into a free kick taker and gets forward plus Thierry attacks the opposition box with prompting from the Coaches. Ramsey is stretching his legs and gliding into attacking positions.
It feels we are turning into the Dutch total football team under Rinus Michel where players can change positions especially in attacking areas of the pitch. The Johan Cruyff doppelgangers have manifested at the Valley.
Just want to give Macca a shout out as one of our most improving players. Sure, he can still have a wobble in him but I really want to see his name in the starting line-up these days........ which is a reversal from my thoughts a year or so ago. With the absence of Lloydy I think he's been absolutely key to our defense by both playing well and by stepping into more of a leadership role. Well done him I say!

Maybe shouldn't start him at Wembley though..
