Charlie will see out the rest of the season with us before moving on to pastures new.
I personally thank him for what he's done for the club in his time. We are undoubtedly in a better place than we were
Are we though ? The medical side is clearly better . The team is playing well and winning games (more by attrition than guile, but they are winning . There’s a feel good factor that comes when the team is doing so but there was under Bowyer and the club was not in a good place then . Crowds are not huge. Lots of key players likely to leave this summer if we are in league one so a rebuild will be necessary. Do we have a director of recruitment ? In my view , Jones is papering over a lot of cracks with the current excellent run of games . Recruitment has been ok - better than previous seasons, but a lot of them are Jones players . Of last summer’s influx, some have been good, but some haven’t . I’m delighted with how we are doing in the league but I wouldn’t be giving Methven a lot of credit for any of that.
I have no idea of who should take how much credit ....... but it seems to me that CM has helped bring us the best owners we've had for quite a while, ditto the squad, the best football management, coaching and support staff, progress on improving club infrastructure and commercial matters and the best flipping season we've had for half a dozen years. So for what it's worth, thanks Charlie! He comes across (on his pod) as a football fan and he's clearly well-connected. I do wonder if he's interested in a role on the regulatory side of the game? Goodness knows he couldn't do much worse than some of the numpties who've run the FA and EFL over the years.
For me, the clearest indicator he was pushed rather than jumped, is in that statement.
Methven said: "It has been an immense honour to serve this wonderful club. This time last year, when things were not progressing fast enough for all our liking, I agreed to move to south-east London and put my shoulder to the wheel, though it had never been my intention to take an executive role."
If he has jumped, the move to South East London has turned out to be a disaster. Unless he's already signed up to be involved with Millwall or (at a pinch) Gillingham...
It won’t have been a move-move, he’ll have just used the spare bedroom in Southalls flat for a couple of months….
I’m sure I seen him outside one of the big houses in Court Road, in Eltham.
Good. I find some of the comments on here hilarious, with people desperate to believe whatever nonsense the club puts out, but never mind.
What’s your view on the reaso?
I don’t rate him and I don’t trust him, but I think the length of his tenure as chief exec tells you all you need to know. I also heard the club had approached someone else to take his job in recent months.

So pretty much in line with what he said on his podcast where he didn't want a role initially, took it to try and help steer us in the right direction, but ultimately didn't want it long term?
See that's the funny thing with stuff like this, anyone can try and manipulate the details to fit a certain narrative.
Ok, so please don't shoot me.... I was in London two weeks ago and had a meeting with a very prominent sports producer who I have worked with on a few sports documentaries over the years. We got onto the subject of Charlton and he told me that just before Christmas some "BIG AMERICANS" tried to buy Charlton but were rejected by the current owners.
I know nothing more than that except the people that wanted to buy us were seriously, seriously wealthy. I mean - define that versus our billionaire owners now (I have no idea)?! They didn't say anymore than that to me. So I know nothing more.
In my opinion, CM has gone because the promises of reducing costs and getting the team promoted by just doing things better hasn't worked out. My god, it's a whole lot better than under TS, but could it have got worse (I mean, it nearly got worse last year under CM et al and Appleton)... but whilst I didn't think and don't think he's qualified to run this club, I'll say he's done better than TS. However, we are still losing an absolute fortune and so by his own standards he set, he failed to reduce the losses whilst getting us promoted at the same time.
So, it was better than it was, but a club like Charlton should be doing better than it was - any person/group with any abilities should do better with Charlton than TS, his missus and his son did!
Beware this is a new claimant of being ITK 🤫 please only loan the likes as it could be a scam 😁 After several CL members sent money to that nice West Africa gentleman on line I worry about how gullible Charlton folk are ?
If so called "BIG AMERICANS"* had made an offer it would only be turned down if it was a low offer or the present 'Large Americans' that own a share of Charlton Athletic (no valley or Sparrows) may be 'HUMONGOUS AMERICANS' and are willing to play the long game.
Intriguing to know the real ambitions of the present incumbents as they are incognito.
Seems a bit of an odd time to announce something like this. If he is going to continue in his role for the rest of the reason then why not wait until the season is done to make this public knowledge? Surely we want as little off-field distractions as possible at this time?
Regardless, we are definitely in a much better place now than we were when he first came in. Not sure how much of that is down to him but credit where it’s due.
This announcement happening now can only mean one of two things. Either the owners already have the replacement lined up or CM is stepping down of his own accord for some reason unrelated to the club.
I believe the rumours of Rodwell also going will be confirmed soon enough. Still leaves the non-FD, FD (Warrick) and someone I don’t think we’ve ever heard from, Simon Lenagan (Sporting Director) from CM’s little cohort who probably won’t last much longer.
There’s a feel-good factor around the club at the moment thanks to Jones & the team, including coaches and Will Abbott’s team. That will allow some to see CM’s tenure with more positivity and we do seem to have rebuilt a structure that had been decimated over several previous owners. Hopefully that holds us in good stead to keep improving over the next few years.

I actually think it’s a sensible way to do it. Would have been far worse for news to get out, as it would, that Charlton were looking for a replacement if nothing had been said.
There will be an interview with Charlie Methven in the paper/website this week.

His trousers colour clashed with the little lizard?
I was not that happy with Methven being here, if only because he was a monster in the Sunderland doc, and with cameras around, can only assume he was offering the best version of himself, which was still not a pretty sight.
I'll say one positive thing about the new owners - they're willing to adapt, chop and change.
