  • Starting line-up the same please apart from Godden for Leaburn. Hope Jones is fit.

Point of order in the opening post about the referee: if he was an assistant in the 4-4 draw with Ipswich then surely he has "officiated" a Charlton match before? He may not have taken charge, but if he was one of the officials then he would have officiated.

    (Apologies for the pedantry. )
How many referees are the man in charge on a match day? If he ran the line or was fourth official, does that mean he refereed the game or did the actual referee do that?

When people look at referees, you don’t go we have a bad record with XYZ because he was fourth official in our game where ABC got sent off and gave away a penalty. You look at who was the man in charge that day.

I take your point, but he’s never been the man in charge of any of our fixtures until tonight.
  • I'd be tempted to start Gilbert, to give Berry a rest and also this is a game where we should be on the front foot and his extra attacking quality could be useful to get us off to a fast start. Also Godden for Leaburn. As Callum said, no need to fear this one - this team is different gravity compared to other Charlton sides in recent years.
I don’t get this ‘give Berry a rest’  viewpoint that various posters keep saying. He’s been playing every game. He must be super fit by now, particularly as it looks, to me, like Nathan has told him to put himself about as much as he can and don’t worry if he can’t keep that effort up for 90 minutes.

Berry is one of the best finishers in the league but even the greatest of them all don’t score from every chance they have. To ‘suggest resting’ him seems utterly daft, especially in a team where the defenders are giving the strikers a run for their money in the goals scored stakes at the moment.
One of the reasons I think that NJ picks Berry, is that Berry often wins tackles high up the pitch. Which means we have a chance of gaining possession in attacking areas.

It's also quite telling that in the last couple of games, where we haven't been quite so dominant (and weren't chasing the game, unlike Orient), that when Berry has been substituted, Jones has gone for Anderson, not Gilbert. To maintain the high pressing style.

I was in Luxembourg poised and ready with a paid for match pass watching the pitch inspection when the game was called off.
I really hope I still ‘own this package’ for the game tomorrow, but I can’t be sure I won’t have to pay again.
If you find that you have to pay again,  just ask for a refund for the abandoned fixture.

You might say this team is on another planet compared to recent seasons.
    Haha, typo ;-)

I like Berry and you're right, he probably doesn't need a rest. My point is really that I think this is a game where we can afford to be more attacking and "maybe" Gilbert's flair can be used to good effect rather than Berry's all round graft (which I think is exceptional for an attacking midfielder).

Saw the names Wollacott / Watson / Fraser in Crawley's team and experienced what I can only describe as some mild symptoms of PTSD.  How far we've come!

This is exactly it. Berry knows exactly how to play in our system, he knows where to be and when to press and sometimes even leads the press. Gilbert is probably still learning these things in training, I’d like to see more of him but I feel like starting him in certain games would not be wise.

Out of possession he won’t be the same level as Berry/Anderson, in possession he’s a level above, so Jones is doing well at picking the right moments to use him. I’m sure he will start games soon, but it is likely to be against an opponent we think will sit back behind the ball which is when we will need Gilbert’s quality
  • I pray to God I'm wrong, but this could be a monumental banana skin. We are now well into the silly season, where shock results almost become the norm, as clubs in or near the bottom of the table start to put in do or die performances. Let's pray that Crawley have given up any hope of survival this season. Tonight's fixture could well be their last chance saloon.
  • Need to payback Crawley. Forster Crawley 7 is not in the squad, has been putting in some good performances for Crawley.
Head says 0-1 heart says another 0-5 away win. But either way we must come back with the points.
    COYRs!!!

  • Thought i'd put up something better than a full stop when i deleted my original post, hope you agree, this is Bailey
Those are the eyes of a Dog going: "Why are you doing it @eastterrace6168... Why are you putting yourself through the pain, the anguish, not to mention the disappointment... of another Charlton campaign"
  • I think this is going be tougher than we are all thinking . I’d take any kind of win .
I’m going for 1-0 scrappy win . TC to score
  • Scrappy win is most likely, but you can't write Crawley off. Do so at your peril. Just ask Reading.
Right tactics and attitude, and I think 2-3 goal margin. Wrong attitude and we end up with a point or worse.
  • We should be playing our strongest team for this. I see no point at all resting players. The potential three points today are as important as three points on Saturday - and possibly easier to get. Any suggestion about resting Lloyd Jones is mad. No Lloyd = no win.

Exactly this. Even during this exceptional run of good form, the wins have mostly been by an odd goal, late winners from set pieces etc. At this stage of the season it's about grinding out results and whilst I'd love to be proved wrong I just don't see us smashing any teams at their stage of the season by 3 or 4 goals as some are predicting, especially away from home.

Can he take a penalty better than the other Bailey?

I never check my online bank statements so maybe I have already been paid back. It was so long ago I don’t have the tech skill to track it down or find out.

Also wondering if it may be worth protecting Coventry from a 10th booking as this is the 36th game?
The best way to protect Con Cov from a 10th booking is to take control of the game from the opening kick off, get a 2-0 lead (at least) and then sub him with a job well done.

There's no point weakening the side on an ifs-buts-maybe basis. If he was carrying a knock that would be a different matter because you could be facing a longer-term absence if the injury was aggravated but right now we need our best players on the pitch because a slip up could be seriously damaging to any promotion hopes we have.
Yes there are no easy games, etc, but all along my feelings are that we needed Coventry to keep his nose clean until we had played Stockport, so that he played in the 3 consecutive games against promotion rivals. Indeed it wouldn't have been a disaster if he was booked against Stockport and had missed today and Wigan, the on paper easiest games of this group of fixtures.
  • Back on NYD, I stayed in the pubs in the old town, and never even bothered walking to the ground.

Today I'm driving, so need the game to go ahead, as that Plan B isn't available  :D

    He's a winner that's for sure, so couldn't do any worse a job...but I may be biased...🤔
  • Traipsing over to Crawley after work on a Tuesday night is a major ball ache. Wish we could have played this one when it was originally scheduled!
  • "The Red Devils currently sit 22nd in the Sky Bet League One table, nine points adrift of safety ahead of Tuesday fixture.

Rob Elliott’s side, who are without a win in six, come into the clash on the back of a 1-1 draw at home to eighth-placed Reading last weekend."

The Charlton fan in me screams that we're going to lose this 1-0. The Nathan Jones fan in me says this is the start of another run of wins!

  • I think this is the ideal game to get Dixon involved.
Having seen him play for the U21s three times, not a good idea.  He has speed and skill but is physically not tough enough yet for a first team playing L1 fixtures. Give him time or we will just have a repeat of what has happended to so many past young, promising CAFC players that were hyped up, and played too early i.e. they get battered, small sections of the crowd gets on their back, they lose confidence and fade away.

Very likely he will be ready for next season and maybe an appearance as a sub in any games late this season that have nothing on them,  but not before.
