Really interesting looking back at that Crawley post-match thread now.
I'm not going to quote anyone as I'm not digging anyone out for being annoyed, that was the correct reaction, but most posts were calling for Jones out and a fair few talking about how Elliot is the kind of manager we should be looking to replace him with. In their 17 games since we played them they have won 2, drawn 5 and lost 10. An almost exact mirror of our form of won 11, drawn 5 lost 2. There's more than a few Crawley fans now calling for Elliot's head. I think even the most positive posters on that thread wouldn't have seen that coming. Except Ronnie of course, the true oracle.
The real question we have to ask ourselves now is if Crawley function as some kind of Charlton reversal mechanism and once we play them our results will flip again and we'll only win 2 of our remaining 10 while they surge up the table.
I was fuming after the reverse fixture and my post calling for Jones' head got 50 plus likes. It was a very common sentiment.
A wise man once told me to make my words short and sweet lest I end up eating them. I'm definitely eating my words right now, and optimistic about tonight. Crawley fans - from their relatively limited online presence - are very doom and gloom, WAGMI and Elliot out etc.
i think we will see a lot of what the squad is about tonight, whether they set out with a determination to set the record straight or if we see some fear due the the visceral reaction from the reverse fixture.
The defeat to Crawley back in Dec could still come back to haunt us come May. Hopefully.we make up for it tonght and they certainly have a big gap.to make up to survive. 1-0 to the Addicks.

I didn't call for NJ to go, but I did say he'd got the transfer window very wrong and it would be tough going this season. O me of little faith. I just couldn't see how it was going to come together with no width, no penetration in midfield and our marquee signing looking so poor. To NJ's credit, he has great faith in his abilities and his view of the game, and he never doubted that it would come together. I think he feels a little let down that the fans didn't trust the process. But we've seen it go terribly wrong so many times, can't blame us.

I don't believe this team is currently playing with any kind of fear. What we need from them is to focus on the job and get the 3 points that will give us a healthy cushion form 7th. NJ will be sure as damn it reminding them to do their jobs properly, and that is exactly what I expect to see what they are made of tonight... tough nut winners.
Saw the names Wollacott / Watson / Fraser in Crawley's team and experienced what I can only describe as some mild symptoms of PTSD. How far we've come!
Watson has a bit of talent . Clearly something else missing .

I never called for NJ to be sacked but I was so dispirited after that game and really felt we were in for a lower table season again. I couldn't see anyway we would turn it round at that point

18/1: Burton 1-1 D 1/2: Wrexham 1-2 L 11/2: Stevenage 3-1 W 15/2: Wycombe 1-1 D 18/2: Wigan 1-1 D 1/3: Cambridge 0-2 L 8/3: Reading 1-1 D
Drawing with Wycombe, Wigan and Reading and losing by the odd goal to Wrexham is tidy. So we are in for another battle. A draw is no good to them, so they have to attack. If we takeout chances, we'll win; otherwise another 0 0 draw.

I don't think you have to eat your words. If he'd been sacked following that match after 2 wins in 11, 6 of them losses then it wouldn't have been unreasonable. That he wasn't and things have turned around is good. I never called for Jones to be sacked but equally I was finding it hard to square his claims that we were so close to being a good side based on what I was seeing and it can be really frustrating hearing that after the 17th long diagonal of the half gets floated out of play. He was right though, it was small changes that turned us around completely.
I stand by everything I said back then. It was an atrocious performance, and NJ deserved all the criticism he got afterwards.
If we had been a "soft" team outfought by battling/dirty opponents it might have been understandable, but no. We played terrible hoofball like a poor non league team, with Crawley at least trying to play on the deck.
