  • if Jones is struggling I would be minded to keep resting him for a couple of games to try and recover given McIntyre seemed okay
Depends how much his absence was forced or a choice but if the latter I agree. Let him come back for Northampton to get back into rhythm before two massive games against those above us

  • Huge win. That's the most stressed I've been watching us in a good while as Mansfield always looked dangerous on the edge of the box but we stood up well. McIntyre was immense, threw himself at everything, was good with both feet on the ball and looked like he'd run his heart out by the end. I like him a lot so far. Coventry was good again but felt like he was trying to hold the midfield together on his won at times, I think Doc ran well but didn't help him out enough. Small looked ropey defensively on the right but much more comfortable down the left and the front two were their usual selves. I thought Karoy was absolutely perfect for what we needed when he came on, harried them so much higher up the pitch and was a huge part of us not letting them build up too much momentum at the end. He doesn't take the best care of the ball but he's always involved from the first minute he's on and he dragged us through at the end.

Mansfield have picked up a bit and I did see this as a potential banana skin away game so the fact we went nose to nose with a physical team and came away with 3 points right after out-playing a slick passing team just on Saturday shows just how strong this team is. There's still so many tough games to go; we never seem to beat Lincoln, Cambridge just took a point off Wrexham at home and those two big away games are looming. We are now 10 points ahead of 7th place with 6 games to go though, that's the important stat. Keep pushing for that 2nd spot and we'll be certain to make the Playoffs
    21 games v Lincoln, we’ve won 9, Lincoln have won 5, with 7 draws.
Sure, but I'm not sure how much bearing the 1932 win really has here. We didn't play them between 1986 and 2020, and in those games since 2020 we've played them 9 times. We've only won 2 and one of those was back in 2021. We haven't beaten them in over 2 years and have failed to win in the last 3 matches, two under Jones, so they're clearly a team we struggle with in their current incarnation.

Great 3 points to keep the momentum going and thought the fans were superb throughout. So pleased with NJ and the squad for giving us a Charlton team to be proud of again. Love the togetherness at the moment and hope the fans turn out in numbers for our remaining games.
Surprised that Mitchell didn’t join in with the rest of the squad and the fans at the end of the game - expect he’s peeved not to be playing

This does though and you were absolutely correct @bobmunro and others who said Goddens shot went through the side net. Still ca t see how it did it though, there was no obvious hole.

A vintage away trip, with a stop en route in Nottingham for a pint in Canalhouse and Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem and then on to Mansfield to The Brown Cow and the Railway Inn. All very fine establishments.

As for the game, I thought we started the match well, moving the ball nicely and stretching the opposition, especially down the left. One of their players then kindly presented Matt Godden with an open goal, an opportunity he of all people was never going to pass up.  We then looked in control of the game until Mansfield equalised on around 40 minutes, following which they were naturally given a huge lift and we seemed at 6s and 7s.

Things calmed down after half time and  there weren’t really many clear opportunities at either end in a scrappy game, although we perhaps looked the more likely if anyone was going to break the deadlock. Not a high quality game but ultimately one decided by a moment of real class from our man of the moment, Tyreece Campbell.

I thought that McIntyre did well in place of our defensive kingpin, although the bench looked a little weak and the substitutes who were introduced reflected a lack of depth, especially up top. Still, a great 3 points and the fact that Wrexham and Wycombe dropped points against the bottom 2 underscores the fact that nothing is yet decided and there’s all to play for.

A win against Lincoln on Saturday will put us on 75 points and the following two games against Cambridge and Northampton will give us an opportunity to consolidate 4th place and potentially even put some pressure on the teams immediately above us. Let’s hope we have a reasonably injury-free squad to attack the rest of the season.

Lovely recap as usual - though I always wonder how you write so eloquently after listing a mighty pub crawl in your pre match routine!
He’s had many years training in his day job.
  • @thickandthin63 said ‘A well dug out win,but wtf was Anderson thinking when he punted the ball straight to their keeper with about a minute left.’

Yep, no reason why it shouldn’t have sailed over the keepers head to seal a 3-1 win.
One reason is that he wasn’t trying to shoot. He had time on the ball and just booted it upfield. The goalkeeper collected the ball halfway up their half of the pitch and allowed them to put unnecessary pressure on us. It was very bad from Anderson but otherwise he did well.
Yeah, it was a silly ball and could have cost us. Only thing I was wondering was if he was trying to do something more clever but over hit it: A softer kick that just didn't have the power to reach the penalty box could have drawn the keeper out into no man's land and created a bit of mayhem at the back. Would have been tricky to get right though. It would have to be strong enough to turn the defenders whilst not reaching the box.

  • Strange to say but this was a better result than Saturday's. Rolling over a poor side at home in the sun is fun but having to face up to improving and tough opponents like Mansfield at their place, and beat them, is a measure of how hard working and resilient this Charlton side is. Clough Jnr had done his homework and had players doing particular jobs in key areas and closing down hard on the midfield. It led to some scrappy play not helped by what appeared to be a hard playing surface, meaning that the ball pinged off players and led to constant loss of possession. Mansfield have some good players and I was particularly impressed by their number 6 whose run and cross led to their equaliser.

It all came down to a switch in time. TC was getting bullied by their big number 9 on the left wing and was switched (at last) to the right wing. He immediately started to prosper. Then came the moment of great skill and technic moving across the advancing left back and immediately turning to shoot home at the near post. Game won.

Will be interesting to see how NJ sets up the team on Saturday. The way the team plays, and the number of games coming along in quick succession this month, is going to be physically and mentally challenging for the players. L Jones was out last night, TC looked very tired as he walked off and Berry becomes a shadow of himself as the game proceeds. Might see some changes at the weekend.

These highlights are a bit longer and I think they include Godden's effort you are talking about.

  • Absolutely brilliant getting the result last night, but it was tough going at times. Not only were Mansfield a lot better than I'd expected, it took us a long time to get into any sort of rhythm. Some of the first half passing was definitely below par. At times Docherty, Ramsay and Small looked like they hadn't seen each other before. Perhaps they actually weren't seeing each other as clearly as they might with those shitty grey tops blending into the shadows. Still, we never gave up and another bit of Campbell magic brought the points home. I fear that this thread could easily have read very differently this morning. Fantastic scenes at the end though what a joy it was seeing the players celebrating.

Final observation, I don't want to cast any aspersions but why were no less than four of our team wearing wrist bandages. What's going on there?

Nothing to see here, Ramsay and Small have always worn tape around their wrists and hand, Edwards always has something on his wrist and I've not seen enough of McIntyre to know if it's normal or not

Steve Brown on Charlton TV was also caught out by the cold  :D
  • Anyone complaining about the cold yesterday was not at Stockport away last season for the cup replay.

Yesterday was shorts and flip flops weather in comparison.

  • We were lucky, really missed Jones.

Midfield was overrun during this game, and against Peterborough and Crawley.

Drop Small, put Campbell on the right wing, bring Anderson  back and stiffen up midfield.

We are heading for the playoffs.  Up against much stronger teams.

The way they roughed up Campbell.

It's going get much harder to get a result. Where is Leaburn , always injured

    Do you need a cuddle?
