The FT Alphaville people have cracked the calculations behind Trump‘s tariffs. It’s terrifying – the work of children (Trump‘s mob, not the alphaville people) https://on.ft.com/4jlBHsBReciprocal tariffs: you won’t believe how they came up with the numbers
You couldn't make this stuff up. The ultimate logic is that every country that runs a trade surplus with the US is cheating - this has nothing to do with reciprocal tariffs.
I can't believe that the US has let this crap go ahead. There are plenty of economically illiterate in the world but you don't expect one of them to be US Prrsident.

Here’s what the White House and its crack team of trade investigators seems to have done:
Take the US’s goods trade deficit with any particular country, and divide it by the total amount of goods imported from that country. Cut that percentage in half, and there’s the US’s “reciprocal” tariff rate.
My Finance people have gone undercover and the website is no longer functioning. I guess they don’t want me to see if there are any remaining pennies left in my investments following trumpy’s announcement of increased tariffs. I assume there’s FA I can do about it now other than to stick it out (ooh arh matron) unless you know otherwise. I was thinking of using my ISA allowance in my ISA S&S as its buying whilst S&S are low but should I just open a Cash ISA until things return to normal. Will normality ever return?

Confused Solidgone!
Me (not an expert) Cash ISA until things resemble normality.
Golfie (An expert) Stocks and Shares, prices are low and will go up.
In the first few moments of trading the Dow Jones has fallen 2.8%, the
S&P 500 is 3.3% lower, and the Nasdaq - which is dominated by tech
stocks - has dropped 4.4%.
I suspect that within 48 hours Trump will reverse his tariff decision but not before all his Billionaire mates have made obscene profits buying stock at rock bottom prices.
Can’t help but think he’s just shorting the markets to make a load of cash!
The level of volatility (both stock market and crypto) is a really, really powerful way for someone in the know to make a lot of money.
I really hope someone is looking into it as it could be the biggest financial scandal in modern times, and as someone who doesn't have Trump derangement syndrome, I find it completely plausible.

As since I transferred provider I was still in a lot of cash I’ve bit the bullet and bought some more US ETF’s watch the slide continue!!
I've opened, this week, a S&S ISA account for me, and another for my Mrs. Will be putting a chunk of change into each before the April 5th tax year deadline. Is it enough just to have the money sitting in the ISA wrappers by 5th, or does the money need to be invested by then too?
You can put in the cash and invest in S&S at a later date.
It all depends on the provider. Where is it going into initially ? A holding account ? What instructions do you have to invest? Some need a fund or other entity for it to be "invested".
It'll go into ISAs wrappers I've already set up with Interactive Investor, non-managed - ok, thanks @golfaddick I best give them a shout as no universal rule. I'll be buying into funds, I'm fine with that bit, it's only that tax-year eligibility bit I'm unsure of.
I got my answer from Interactive Investor - it's in the wrapper and that's enough to be in the 24/25 tax year for them. I didn't specifically need to put it in a cash ISA in the meantime. Thanks also @cafctom and @Covered End for your thoughts!
Now to decide whether to risk catching a falling knife or wait it out a little longer.

I don't think Trump or a lot of his wealthier supporters would see anything wrong in manipulating markets to line their pockets. The Republican Party now functions as a cult and checks and balances are gradually being dismantled.

Don't think so. He's absolutely cooked if he backs down that quickly. Needs at least a month before he can spin it to 'enemies of the US are conspiring against us'. Bonus - the longer it goes on, the more his buddies make out of the tank. Expect he'll use it as a pretext to bomb Iran, or annex Greenland, or invade the Moon

If it does turn out he is guilty of manipulating markets then as others have said it will be the biggest financial scandal of modern times. The whole structure would be f***ed.
Dear fellow mug-punters. I've said it before to those talking the Buy the Dip mantra. Even taking into account today's slide, here is the S&P 500. It's still nearly 5% up over 12 months. Personally I think there's further to fall. The brilliant minds on Wall Street still haven't fully absorbed that their genius turnip has slapped tariffs on a bunch of penguins.

Almost feels like a hoax.
Israel 17%
Iran 10%
Re my previous post where I suggested children set these tariffs, I would now like to apologise to children everywhere 🥵

Just another day in paradise.
Edit.
I wonder when Americans will wake up & smell the coffee. (Probably never as they wont be able to afford to buy it 😆)
Trump knows he is above the rule of law.
Wtf is going on in the USA?
