With Jones missing a number of games I think POTY is a straight fight between Coventry and Gilly

Just found out that friends of mine live next door to Wrexham goalie Okonkwe. Asked them to give him a bung to let a few in against us but then they said he had Ryan Reynolds to stay the other week so they didn’t think I could compete 🤔
Thats interesting but i am struggling to see the link to Gillesphey

Okonkwe beat him to Fans Players of the Month... I posted him winning it on the last Page, and made a comment about him getting a Manager of the Month style jinx

  • Earlier in the season it was fair to say that he was probably the weakest element in the defence. That didn’t make him a bad player it just meant in my opinion that he wasn’t as good as the others. In one of yesterday’s post match interviews NJ used the term ‘most improved player’ while recognising it was potentially backhanded praise. He often seemed to get blamed for defensive errors that were down to someone else. You’ve saved me trawling through this thread myself to find some of the more ludicrous assessments

We've had players before who have stuck it out and turned things around but I genuinely can't think of many if any who have made such a big improvement in the course of a single season.

It might be amusing to look back at some of the comments made about him earlier this season but he really WAS struggling and did not look like turning into the player we've seen since.
I think it's a fantastic example of someone working hard and turning round his performances.  I am so chuffed for him.
Absolutely, I've no intention of downplaying his improvement or his hard work to make it happen - credit where due.

But equally it's not like the criticism wasn't justified AT THE TIME. And I'm not going to pretend that back then I would ever have guessed that Gillesphey of all players would arguably be the MVP of our play off games overall.

I was very wrong - but I'm very glad to be tucking into some humble pie on this one.
  • Seems like he's earned a nickname within the squad, TC refers to him as LJ a couple of times, and Leaburn tagged him as "my man John!" In a recent Instagram story, apparently they refer to him as Little John
  • He has become a rock in our defence. Absolutely incredible change from early season

As I said in the match thread, an English Miguel Llera, he is pony

I’m also of the opinion he is poor.
Another waste of space. Clubs must see us coming a mile off! "Cost us the game, but other than that - he was great!" Laughable.

He looks a cross between Franny Jeffers and Carl Jenkinson when out on the training pitch

Big slice of humble pie... he has been quality second half of the season

If he's Little John, who's Robin Hood?

  • Much more aggressive and positionally sound than when he arrived .  Well protected by Jones and Edwards, admittedly , but his transformation has been shown to watch.  Bravo, Macca .

When Lloyd was missing and both McIntyre and Mitchell looked shaky when playing alongside him, Macca was immense and to cap it off with a free kick goal at Wembley to put Charlton back in the Championship is what dreams are made of.

Now my favourite Geordie if you can be called that when you are from Ashington 20 miles away. Probably not, as it would be like all Londoners being  called Cockneys.

    Ashington sporting heroes:
    Jackie Millburn
    Jimmy Adamson (Burnley captain)
    Bobby Charlton
    Jackie Charlton
    Steve Harmison
    Mark Wood
    Michael Oliver( Top Ref)

    Now add Macaulay Gillesphey 👏🏼
  • His goals this season were at really critical moments as well, his free kicks are deceiving as they are low don't look powerful enough but keepers struggle to get to them

Whatever the undisclosed fee, what a season he has had and what a top bloke. Another great character assembled by the recruitment team. Pretty sure he will never forget that goal, now part of Charlton history.
  • He seems such a relaxed and unassuming character. First half of the season I would always worry about the one mistake a game. Turn around has been amazing. To have turned it around and be a steady eddie would have been impressive- but he is so much more than that.

For the championship, we have to remember Plymouth felt he was someone they don't need - but i think we are looking at a completely different player now how will hold is own.
Plymouth also switched from playing a back 3 to a back 4 so one less centre back spot, and Gillesphey got injured. I think with the way he’s been playing for us recently he will make the step up this time
