  • I was part of the holy triumvirate of Charlton Life royalty where I sat, myself ,AFKA and Nicholas , 3 wise old stooges with their families jumping up and down in complete delirium, also thanks to Nicholas for moving around so little shit could see the game.
good day out but it’s never enough , we needed another goal to close the GD on Wycombe 🤪
my heart won’t be able to take the play offs please let us go up . I can’t stand any more league one guffness

saw Chuks waiting in car park and third choice keeper walking away from the ground after the game .

Oohaah are you the silver haired fella who used to sit in the NW in the prem days with a fella called Matt, electrician?
    Yep
My mate recognised you, you used to be behind us (we’re still there), we were behind you on Monday, told you off for perving at the league table at half time.

I recognised Nicholas from the old choice tv videos and have now put 2 n 2 together…had assumed you lot had long since chucked it in, but I now realise you’re leading the nightly call to prayer to the Charlton life gods to resolve this shambles
  • Promotion hasn’t happened yet. That should be the only focus.
The championship is hard, and getting the fifty points if we get there would be the aim I think.

Some people like to complain about 'hoofball'. But big factors in our success are, Jones's 40 yard headers out of defence, Edwards's 30 yard throws and Gillesphey's 70 yard lateral crosses. Between them they shift defence to attack very quickly.
As a isolated tactic in specific circumstances ie counter attack this is true.
As general "modus operandi "- it relies on accuracy pace and muscle of attacking players. However it's  more likely a get out of trouble "no thought, little/low skill option".
If it's so good why isn't it a frequent tactic in the premier league where some of the best players in the world play?
Because it's easy to defend and gives away posession. It works in L1 as players aren't so good.

Our tactics are being very successful in L1.
Some teams have more ambitious aims- but they carry more risk and need greater skill to carry them out.
We put the ball up in the air as more skilful teams are negated- their football on the grass is bypassed. If they try and bring the ball down and control it- thats a risk as at this level mis-control is common and can be cause of loss of the ball.

Look at the defence- "foot through the ball"-reduces the risk of a misplaced pass to midfield.
Lloyd Jones has flourished without the responsibility of bringing the ball down and passing in pressure situations.
    (Remember misplaced passes last season)

Its the role of midfield/attack to. win the ball and keep it in the attacking third.

Godden has been feeding off scraps the season. He has the ability to score more has been limited by the few chances we create as we frequently lose the ball .

If he had been in a footballing team -say Birmingham or Bolton (in previous seasons) he would have had more goal opportunities and scored more.

So we are a hoof ball team being successful through being ultra competitive and physical fast and strong.
Foot through the ball- few goals conceded avoiding unnecessary mistakes.
Goals "for" OK- due to talented strikers particularly Godden ( and Leaburn when fit) feeding off scraps.

    My concerns are
    - we will be outplayed by more skilful teams . Whether we meet them this season or next (in the Championship?) thats when we will struggle.
-will we be able to attract skilful players in the next transfer window. We will need another major rebuild if we change our "style", if we don't we have another short stay .
    - will we be able to attract good academy talent (if they watch  the first team play)

In short we are heading up a blind alley.A false dawn. Sure a transfer window flush with money and good player selection could change that.

We all know that the skill/performance gaps between the divisions grows wider every season, promoted clubs are always likely to go straight down again. No-one knows how a terrific (say) L1 plyer will get on in the Championship until after he plays a few games there.
IF (when) promoted we will need strengthening, i m o, especially in midfield and attack. Unfortunately Matt Godden and Luke Berry aren't getting any younger and we can't rely on Dixon and Mbick to take up that slack immediately.
Our defence is solid and I reckon can do a job in the Champ. Also, it's a fairly young set.
Will Mannion has improved outta sight as a reliable keeper. (Playing behind a rock solid, consistent defence always makes a keeper's job 'easier')

As said, investment in the team and careful recruitment will be vital to retain our hard fought Champ spot. MONEY and how it's spent as ever will be absolutely vital. Staying up for the first season is imperative. Charlton Athletic is a BIG club and given shrewd ownership and management I reckon we will thrive over the coming seasons

In terms of skills gaps between leagues, Champ to Premier, I obv agree based on recent seasons.  However, it looks like all 3 promoted league one clubs will stay up this season (Portsmouth already are, Oxford close, maybe Derby in trouble), so I don't think the gap is as big as some are making out between L1 and Champ.

Still a long shot but we beat Wrexham next week and we're at home to 20th in the table, they'll be away to 11th, on paper, and the way the 4 teams have been playing over the last few games, I'd make us more likely to win than Wrexham in those last games
Let’s not even think about the last game of the season yet. All thoughts have to be about winning at Wrexham.
  • Mannion has been absolutely faultless. Barely gets a mention on this forum because he doesn't hardly makes any mistakes.saves, the defence is that good.

    Only got yourself to blame.
  • So chuffed for the whole squad after the performance, but felt particularly happy for Karoy. I was right near the celebrations for the second half goals and it looked like it meant so much to him when he bagged, and at full time. He has (sometimes rightly) copped a lot of stick for not being up to the level, but clearly sees himself as playing an important role in this squad - something I think Jones is particularly good at drumming into players.

Class day out, even though I dropped my burger on the floor.
    Saved you getting salmonella.

So i really only had 1 kid i took football when in NWQ and i asked him a couple of weeks back do you remember hartlepool last game of the season , red devils , singers , Kermorgants goal he was 6 and i flew back early from Vegas to take him , the fucker doesn't remember any of it ffs

you’re quite the Valley nomad… I think I’m an NWQ til I die man!

My mate’s 45 so I’m sure he’ll be buzzing to be described as a youngster!! Nicholas looks the same as he did back in them videos!

And speaking of kermogant, if memory serves me correctly I recall your pal Matt telling me he rewired Yann’s flat in Greenwich… Get him to come round and give your young Addick victim a history lesson…

I recall Matt was a top bloke so I hope he still gets down there too. 👍

I think this summer we should be in a great place to pick up quality youth players falling out of PL clubs.

show them the improvements in Small, Ramsey, Coventry, Campbell and Edwards in one season under NJ.  Show them the opportunities we give young players to thrive and rebuild careers.

Show them the team spirit. Show them the ones that have left before and gone on to great things.  It adds up to a pretty compelling argument imo.
Maybe we won’t pick up the small tricky players but Jones won’t want them anyway.
if we don’t go up, I’d be surprised if any of those mentioned are with us.

Yep Nicholas has looked that old forever and probably will look the same when he’s 100 .
my eyes are bad so I may not have seen all your wrinkles !
Matt goes occasionally he came to Huddersfield 4-0 with us but lives down in whitstable or some other Kent coast place like that and watches the local non league club occasionally, yep he did Yanns gaff in Greenwich .

So if we don't go up you expect them all to move on up the leagues to improve themselves... Fair enough and clearly a big rebuild would be needed but it would only reemphasize the point I made about us being in a good position to pick up excellent young talent.

Falling out of a PL academy, join us, get experience we have an amazing track record of improving young players and in a year or so you can move on.

To the man in the red scarf on the 3pm to Charlton, I was carrying my season ticket and a programme. You smiled as our eyes met over the league table. Sadly, you had to go before I'd plucked up the courage to say anything. I often think about what might have been... 😉
    Mills and Boon…a must read🤓
