Play-off games on Charlton TV - Wycombe away stream info p3

  • If you’re not to date on something perhaps it’s better to listen to those that are rather than getting it totally wrong and still giving someone a shitty reply? But I’d suggest anyone bother to tune into a Charlton game is a pretty committed fan.

FYI I pay for Charlton TV every year but having to dick around with VPNs and blocked (google) captcha bollocks just means it’s easier to watch via my tv box.
This "box" is presumably a Firestick or alternative? OK. Are you still living in China? If so, why do you have to use a VPN to watch CTV on subscription? And either way, are you using this box to watch an illegal stream of CTV? Why is this a good thing if you have paid to watch CTV legally?

Your box has "every I-Follow channel". Right-oh. But you would still have to pay, let's say, Walsall if for some reason you wanted to waste two hours checking out how Asimwe is doing? Wouldn't you?

I'm sure I've got plenty to learn about the "technology", but mainly I'm interested in the money stream, because that's what's at the heart of the issue we are discussing here. So I'm looking forward to your further enlightenment. Specifically, how many people like you do you think are watching CTV games using such boxes to avoid paying CTV? And why does denying those of us who have paid for it full access to league games help to stop this theft?

Yes I’m still in China and CTV requires a google captcha to login, which you can’t load in China without a VPN, as all google services are blocked, which can often mean completing the captcha only to be then blocked from CTV for….. using a VPN! It’s infuriating getting stuck in such a circle whilst finding a route that gets through.

The box is simple, I turn it on, click on the Charlton channel (or any other club) and it simply works, flawlessly, it’s simply a matter of ease for me. I don’t have to pay anything, I pay Charlton because it’s the right thing to do,

I have no idea about any such numbers, or why the system is so ridiculous, but then, I’m not going around telling people they’re wrong and throwing shitty ‘if you say so’s’ when proven wrong. There was no reason for the shitty reply to fenaddick when he was only trying to help 😞
  • So this becomes a live issue and basically the answer is a resounding "no". This is a link to the comprehensive Perplexity answer to the question, with links to the source webpages. And this is the EFL's list of broadcast partners. Finally these are the useless, soul-less arseholes who negotiated these shoddy deals.

The whole thing is ridiculous and arguably constitutes mis-selling. What's the point of a deal to offer you  a  "season-Pass" of league football, only to deny you the most important, tension-filled games if your team is successful? And really, why can't the clubs be allowed to at least provide the streamed service to its overseas fans at least? I literally know of only one other active Charlton fan in Prague right now. Not exactly a lot of revenue for Nova Sport to lose if we are allowed to watch Charlton TV here instead is it? And if Nova Sport get more than 50 people watching our games in the whole country, I'd be gob-smacked.

Anyway, all is not lost. Luxembourg is not on the EFL's partner list...
Weird - the broadcaster in Israel is called...Charlton.

You do have full access surely. It’s simply the contract excludes play off games. As does a season ticket.

Sky presumably see that as an additional revenue opportunity albeit small. But as I suggested before likely more about hooking customers in who then don’t cancel.

    1. Unbelievable that. How on earth can you stand living there with such authoritarian nonsense?

    2. Cool. Respect for that.
  • After all this to-ing and fro-ing, I still have no idea if I will be able to watch the Wycombe away semi-final game on Charlton TV. Does anyone have a definitive answer?
  • The answer is that no-one knows yet mate, it's not like it makes much difference.  Only takes minutes to sign up for an alternative if you have to.

Now TV will be £35 for one month, which means I could watch the Orient game too, so this works out about the same as if it was on CATV as well.

I am guessing it will not be on CATV.

I'd rather have Terry and Greg and Browny, but needs must.

I've sent Gavin Carter a battery of questions about this in advance of Thursday's @castrust Q&A. I'm hoping that he will at least bring with him an answer about the play-offs to tell us there. The other questions are more long term so I agreed with @Weegie Addick that there's no need to try and field them in that forum.

For the international viewers I have asked him if he can try to make the EFL clowns check whether foreign "partners" are actually showing the game before geo-blocking logins from a given country. But that's a tough ask in such a short time, even if the issue is comically stupid.

But at the moment while we know that Terry and Greg will be there doing audio, we have no idea if the video feed will even be running.

My tip: if it is running and you have Charlton TV, head over to Luxembourg  ;)

  • Cheers, Prague. I'll be in Germany for the final so my chances of a stream look small without signing up for a VPN that suggests I'm in the UK then using SkySports that way. Ridiculous. This thread is very useful though!
  • I'm going to be in Milan for the first game, Charleroi for the second. Really curious about 1) if it will be shown on TV abroad so I can go to a pub or 2) if not, can I get it on my phone/cast to a TV somehow, thanks for asking the questions @PragueAddick
  • ".. it's not like it makes much difference.  Only takes minutes to sign up for an alternative ..." Fraid for some, including me, it isn't so simple. In France the listed broadcaster is beIN Sports. But beIN Sports has it seems decided not to show the game(s), so no alternative but to go down the VPN route. Still trying to sort that out ...
  • there is (rather annoyingly ) a second thread running on this, but its helpful in that  @BalladMan who clearly knows his tech, has discovered that Wycombe are certainly running their streaming for their international fans - including one-off match passes - while at the moment we are not saying anything, not even in the 91 minute studio discussion anchored by Scott Minto. I've mailed @Weegie Addick to say that we really need an answer tonight about the possible viewing arrangements, which she can hopefully forewarn Gavin Carter about. I mean, he's an International Addick and Thomas Sandgaard advocate himself. If anyone knows the value of Charlton TV on the current board, it's him.
  • How come Orient have a studio discussion programme before, half time and after games and we've been refused. Kevin Lisbie is often on it.

That list above posted above may not be exhaustive, there may be others. If you read the Charlton release carefully, you see this:

"Due to EFL broadcast rules, CharltonTV can only stream of the game in countries where the EFL does not have a broadcast deal or in countries where the broadcaster that does have a deal with the EFL elects not to broadcast".

That was the situation that I highlighted to Gavin Carter via CAST ahead of tonight's meet. he would only have got the doc I wrote up on Monday evening so it didn't give him much time, but I think it very likely that this exception is his work, as that nonsense has been happening for several seasons.

This is particularly good news for people in France such as @jimmymelrose, as BeIN are not showing it there even though they are the partner.

Also good news for @Huskaris. Both Italy and Belgium are on the access list above. if you are not a CTV subscriber you can buy a one-off pass for the away game on Saturday.

Coincidentally and not at all related to this list (honest, mr EFL), NordVPN are a sponsor of the club and explicitly Charlton TV, and happen to offer excellent service for me whenever I need a VPN.

Here’s the Charlton affiliate link to purchase their products if you also feel the need to utilise a VPN (for all the reasons they list on their website and not at all related to this list, obviously mr EFL):
    https://nordvpn.com/sports-partner/?coupon=cafc&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_term=&utm_content=Email&utm_campaign=off15&utm_source=aff106844

Once you have subscribed, they also have a series of helpful installation guides (eg for Amazon FireSticks as per this one):
    https://nordvpn.com/download/firestick/

As a tip, remember that the service generally works best when you use a VPN server located close to your physical location…

There was me, thinking Socotra was part of Yemen (but maybe the UAE "involvement" there is being reflected in it being singled out), while Sud Tirol was (I thought) in Italy.

You think right! Was there on hols quite recently. They do have some very nice footie pitches which I think are used by international club teams for pre-seasons, but I very much doubt they have an independent rights deal with the EFL 🤣
  • No mention of Germany on the list, which is a bit surprising. As far as I'm aware from the EFL site there is no deal with a broadcaster there, so it should be available somehow. (I'm thinking ahead to the final)

Assuming this is not some kind of joke of the "I'm popping over to Italy" type, could you explain this, as I've never heard it before. What other considerations might also come into play? e.g I have noticed that if I  connect to a smaller country like Luxembourg the VPN connects straight away whereas for the UK it has several different servers in various cities but often needs several attempts to connect. So i have developed the idea that its because of volume of traffic to the given server. Would that be right?
  • Forgive my ignorance on all this but my brother in France has bought a months NOW TV pass to watch all the play off games. He’s done this before but are the play offs different? Can he do so in France seeing as the EFL have an agreement with Bein?
  • If he's already bought a pass, the safest thing to do would be to test it out with Coventry v Sunderland tomorrow.

AFAIK - and i took a look at NowTV a few days back when i was getting worried - to get Now TV if he was in France he'd have had to set a VPN to UK, before opening the Now TV website; then he would have needed a UK address and  (I think) a  debit card tied to that address. I could have done all that had it been necessary but some other Int. Addicks in France couldn't because they no longer have a UK address and bank account.
