Looks to me from that image that Edwards might be playing him on too. He's closer to being in line than Ramsay but still a bit deep, Gillesphey is a bit higher than everyone else and Jones seems to be stepping out at the last moment so it seems there was generally a bit of a disconnect from the entire backline. It's unusual and not typical of our defence this season. The timing of it to happen was bad and the disappointment associated higher given the nature of the match. There are lessons to be learned but I wouldn't be over analysing it and trying to turn it into some larger trend. Mistakes happen. Sometimes at the worst possible time. That's part of sport.
We need a new goalkeeper, whatever league we are in . Mannion is calm and patrols his box quite well, but his shot stopping isn’t good enough . Whatever division we are in , we will need to strengthen in every position , which will likely include having to replace 2/3 key players as well. We have benefitted from having very few injuries this season but there’s nothing beyond the first 11. We need better options in midfield and will need a couple of new forwards if TC, Leaburn and Aneke are all off .
Yes, we will never keep a clean sheet with Will Mannion in goal 🤷🏻♂️
He’s tidy but not a first choice keeper, in my opinion . Keepers are part of clean sheets, but evidently the defensive structure is the most important factor .
Is it weird that many of those posters who are now giving it the big told you so about whatever reason they think we lost to Wrexham were pretty adamant that we wouldn’t even make the play off places? Never mind take the chance of getting automatic promotion to the penultimate game of the season.
The two teams that have spent the most are up. The marquee signing of January ripped us a new one. All there is to it.
There will always be anomalies (Huddersfield/Reading), that's what happens when multiple teams spend a lot, they can't all be succesful, but when it's all said and done, over time, cash wins. Always will.
You think Leeds and Burnley have gone up through good spirits and a chicken George van, have a word.
No I think you’re right. Generally the clubs that spend the most tend to do the best.
What I don’t get is all the catastrophising over a defeat to a team who’ve proved themselves to be second to only Birmingham over the course of 46 games.
We are what, 2.3, 2.4 points per game since January? Are we really focusing on yesterday’s one off loss when the real thing that killed us was our Oct/Nov/Dec form before the window?
The same people who came out of January saying we hadn’t strengthened enough to maintain a playoff push are the same ones now disappointed that we haven’t taken automatics to the last day of the season.
Think people are looking in the wrong places. The problem isn’t losing at Wrexham in April. It’s losing at Bristol Rovers, at Exeter, at home to Crawley…
My post was more aimed at Fenaddick tbf.
I am focused on the Wrexham loss yes as it's fresh and extremely disappointing. It was extremely difficult to be on the wrong end of such a one way beating by a club who were in the National League in 22/23 and have been averaging crowds of 4k or so for about 20 years. To be done over like that was sickening.
For anyone saying 2nd was a pipe dream etc, it wasn't, if we had beaten them it would have come down to the final day. Instead we didn't rise to the occasion and now there's a bit of concern about the impact.
Those losses you mentioned earlier on may not have happened if we had more players of a higher quality.
I just hope we go up cause I genuinely don't think I can do another league 1 tour, especially after hearing all the whispers of losing TC, Small etc. These rebuilds are horrendous.
A rebuild is far easier in the league above where players want to play championship football compared to this pants league. Unless of course you do what those two have done and pay over the odds.
Rant over, hope they turn up in the play-offs cause that was genuinely as bad as any performance this season, regardless of how well drilled the opposition were.
That was then, the current Wrexham sell out 12k every match and have commercial income (as per my post above) most Championship clubs can only dream of.
They have United Airlines on the front of their shirt and Meta Quest, i.e. one of Mark Zuckerberg's companies, on the back. Ludicrous sponsors for this level, paying big bucks to be associated with the feelgood TV show. Money which enables them to bring in the likes of Sam Smith.
Exactly. That's my point.
It was extremely difficult to watch a club who were without being rude, nothing, non-league, only 5 years ago, to turning us over and securing promotion. All the talk was about them, we were just an extra, a non-entity billed as underdogs.
The half and half scarves, the build up of the game at the Valley, and then this.
Their average attendance was just 4k in 19/20.
So it's not really a case of "that was then". It's still very recent, they were a national league side in 2022/23.
To see a club overtake us in such a short span of time, while also seeing what is meant to be our rivals secure a FA cup final, and the others make serious strides towards a championship play-off place, was genuinely vomit worthy.
I'm at a point where I'm cheering on an oil club to stop a club that is so far ahead of us from lifting a trophy, and hoping our ex- Snake of a player, Scott Parkers team turns over our rivals just to not lose any more credit.
There's a scenario that exists where we lose the play-offs, Palace win an FA cup, and Millwall will be in the play-offs.
Dreadful.
Could be an age thing, but I never viewed Wrexham as being a non league club in the same way I never viewed Stockport or Notts County being one. Same way we don't view ourselves as being a league one club. They went through some shit years but this isn't a Dover or Welling we're talking about.
I can't stand the Wrexham story, but it's mainly out of jealousy. It's what fans of lower league clubs dream of.
Honest words Croydon.
Jealousy is the fuel that drives football fans on and the Charlton Fan base are drowning in Jealousy whether it's Wrexham and their dream that has became a reality or Palace who with Steve Parish in charge are lights years ahead of Charlton; our *stadium is superior to Selhurst park but how delusional would you need to be to not accept that their recruitment since "we sent the Palace down" has overtaken Charlton and left us in a different orbit.
Sure administration and chaos ensued for the Surrey club but out of those difficulties they have bounced back as an established Premiership team that can finish mid table and can get to cup finals. Dancing girls and copying the German model of supporting a club isn't the Charlton way but they found a niche and have stuck to it despite the 'Virgins' becoming Grandads !
We are stuck in this rented one bed flat and keep moaning it's shit because for seven years we lived in our own detached house on a gated estate and rubbed shoulders with the elite. Now we are attempting to upgrade to a terraced house but it's sure not easy after the mismanagement of the last decade(or more) before the present incumbents are trying to move Charlton Athletic back up the housing chain.
My jealousy is with the odious Chelsea and it eats me up from the inside.
Looking back on it this season, when I have looked at the starting eleven and been a bit worried before kick off, we haven't done so well. And I and I imagine others felt that on Saturday. I think Small, even when he is having a bad game is intrinsic to how we play. Our form changed for the better when we found width/pace and an ability to get behind on both sides when Small was played in an advanced position which complemented Campbell on the other side. I think it changes the dynamic from hard to stop to much easier to stop when one of Campbell or Small is not playing. Before this change we were playing entirely in front of teams which even average League One teams can cope with.
Hopefully we look at the starting eleven for the play offs and say , that is our strongest side. Whilst Berry is my preferred starter, seeing Anderson start for him doesn't worry me. Small missing was the big worry against Wrexham and unbeknown to us, Jones was only half fit so really we were not going to see the best version of ourselves, as Nathan Jones would put it. I don't care about momentum as we have shown we can bounce back from a setback multiple times, but we need to go into the play offs as strong and fresh as possible and that should be on Jones' mind on Saturday. And will be i'm sure.

Do you watch the mistakes every week by keepers in the Premier along with the good saves ?
Phillips was a stay on his line keeper who was decent for CAFC and wasn't great with his feet and I don't just mean at Wembley!
Ben Hamer could be a good shot saver but boy did he have some crazy moments not least the Colchester home game when he lingered on the ball and gave away a goal.
Mannion has had a decent season and like everyone at Wrexham including the Classy Ramsey could've done better.
Look forward to the Keeper that never makes a mistake.
Chester is a lovely town by the way. I've been to all the current 92 apart from Harrogate and Barrow and I can't think of a better town north of Watford that I've been to.
Jekyll & Hyde town!
It was lovely during the day and we had a few drinks by the canal and then the Dee and a stroll back through the park. All very pleasant and a great start to the day.
The pubs during the evening in the old town centre were pretty atrocious. And that was after most of the day trip Scousers had stumbled back to the station around 9 😱🤦🏻♂️

Was in Chester about 15 years ago with my kid and his US footie team when they toured England....a nice city during the day but then the drunks and junkies came out at night and was not so nice.....

It reads like you need to take a step back and get a bit of perspective in what is really important in life.
Charlton are a massive part of my life and always will be, but at the end of the day if it’s making you so unhappy & stressed, then you need to remind yourself it’s only a game.
What a disappointing and patronising post.
The fact multiple people have liked it bothers me even more.
Even if you didn't heavily misinterpret my post, a personal post like that would have been best suited to a DM, not a public message. If you truly thought it was bothering me to a point where I should take a break from Charlton (implied), a personal message would have been more appropriate.
You are correct though, I do need to take a step back, but it's definitely not from Charlton.
To clarify I was referring to you feeling the need to rant on CL at 1.56am as you appeared to be so wound up. All the best.
I'm quite ill atm, I woke up needing a dump, I went on here while taking a dump. Time mystery solved.
Even if that wasn't the case, I could be up at that time for a number explainable scenarios like work shift patterns, insomnia, or I could have just got in from a night out. Why does it matter if my post was sent at 1:56am or 3:22pm, is there a time window of posts now on CL as well as not being allowed to discuss anything about the team unless its absolutely pure positivity?
Frankly, it's not your business what time someone posts on here and it probably shouldn't be highlighted, as again, you don't know why a person might be posting so late. To reiterate, I was squeezing out a massive log, I can take a picture next time to justify my 1:56am post?
Stick to the footie comments and avoid giving me guidance on how I should discuss our club and highlight what time I'm making posts in the future please, cheers 👍🏻

You're posting on a public football forum. You're literally making it everyone's business.
If he wants to comment on something you've written at a strange time to be on a football forum then that's totally up to him.
Colour me shocked that you've decided to chime in 😂
The two teams that have spent the most are up.
Dreadful.

Yeah alright Herminator. I know all the posts that aren't overwhelmingly positive get to you for whatever reason, but the feeling is mutual as I roll my eyes everytime you quote Golfie or pre-emptively prepare yourself for people to respond negatively towards Charlton whenever we don't get a result.
You don't like my posts or agree with them, then don't reply to them, or LoL them like all the other usual suspects do.
I don't know what's happened to this site in the last two years or so, but you could give post match thoughts without this bizarre gang up culture.
There now seems to be a status quo on this site at the moment where if your post match thoughts are anything other than Lego Movie "Everything is awesome" type thoughts, you receive backlash. Bonkers.

*If only it was our stadium.
