reminded me that this time in the Bow playoff season we were desperately hoping that he would be fit for the playoffs. He wasnt.
The club kept it quiet to keep the opposition guessing but he was always 100% out for the season with that injury.

The excitement I felt about this guy after we signed him for big money and reputation and that debut goal at Brentford on the opening day...

To quote David Brent... "didn't happen in the end..."

Remember an outrageous goal he scored in a PSF at Pompey and his brace at Brighton when he made Lewis Dunk look horrendous. Such a shame how it worked out with injuries.

Ahhhh Igor. I can't believe it's been 11 years since that debut away at Brentford, he jumped for a header from a corner and seemed to defy gravity by just hanging up there for what felt like minutes, I think I remember JBG making his debut that day too. I loved them both.
1-1 draw and CH tried to bend it into the corner when through rather than a low and hard. Idiot

Didn’t Callum hoist one miles over the bar?

He was unplayable against Brighton when we drew away 2-2, I thought we found a gem if it wasn’t for injuries.

The injuries were one thing, but the playing him when he wasn't fully recovered was more of a big issue.

We ran him into the ground. Before the injuries he was one of the best players in the league.

Vetokele, JBG, Buyens... even Bulot were examples of how we we actually could have done under Roland, at least on the pitch if we'd got players of a similar calibre all over the pitch and with depth.

Instead it was them, and filler like Ba, Bergovich etc. with the squad overall inadequate in terms of a full squad.

The same Lewis Dunk that scored two headed goals against us? :)

I think this is what frustrated me the most about the whole thing.

If RD actually used his network of clubs properly and combined the superior scouting pool with clever manipulation of the loan market etc. (Granada/Udinese/Watford style, but better) then we could have had the dream combo of young, exciting and cheap European footballing talent on the pitch, with a more sustainable and profitable company off the pitch.

However he looked at it differently and decided it could all be done on the cheap and he could just offload a bunch of players into us to cover players he sold, and we'd somehow continue to get results

Apologies but even after all these years, water under the bridge, let bygones be bygones blah de blah, whenever Igor Vetokele's name comes up I immediately think this...

    I am a child!

Yes but Dunk had no idea how to defend Igor.

Really rated Igor and thought he was going to be a special player for us. I think he would have been without the injuries and the turmoil at the club. Nice guy too.

Wasn't it Vetokele who got taken out by the oppositions keeper down the JS end & ref played on instead of giving us a pen ?

It also needed a core of players experienced in the English leagues. For example Tucudean wasn't a bad player, a year learning from Yann as 2nd choice he could have stepped into that role in time. Instead we gave him no time to adapt, expected him to be first choice big striker. It didn't work because we set him up to fail.

It was Igor, but it was outside the box and the keeper only got a yellow when he should’ve been sent off. It was against Luton.

That day, Berry played for Luton, as did Elliot Lee, Andrew Shinnie (who got sent off), and Harry Isted was on the bench.

    Our team that day was:
    Phillips
    Solly - Bauer - Sarr - Purrington
    Bielik
    Cullen - Aribo
    Williams
    Taylor - Vetokele

    Great team.

His career stats after leaving us would suggest otherwise.

Edit - thought you were talking about Igor still. Yeah, Tucudean ended up as exactly what he looked like - a Tuesday Night Goals world beater made good

    Versus

    Mannion
    Ramsay - Jones - Gillesphey
    Small - Coventry - Docherty - Edwards
    Berry
    Godden - Campbell

    Fight!
    No that's not fair

My favourite game of that season. Right in the run in when we were bang in form. Luton already up (basically) but we came out and went for them, got in their faces and were aggressive. Smashed them and they completely lost their heads! Great evening that was. Kickstarted that end of season run where it felt like we scored 3 every game

Bielik was phenomenal that day.  Best midfield performance since the days of Parker .  Of the current team, I’d take Ramsay over the 2019 Solly (but not the 2011 one), Edwards over Purrington and Jones over Sarr, but that’s about it .  Amazing how close the points tallies are- shows what organisation and work ethic can do.

Back to the subject matter - Igor did us a good turn that day .
