Kartal was beaten in straight sets by 30th seed Noskova. 4-6 2-6

Norrie currently a set and double break down against Medvedev. 4-6 1-4

Raducanu has a double break lead in the first set. 5-2

    Draper still to come later.
  • How does a lucky loser get into the second round? Surely once the tournament starts, that's it?

I believe it’s because the seeded players get the first round bye. If it’s later in the tournament (or a first round winner withdrawing before round 2) it’s a walkover but because in this case, the withdrawing player hasn’t beaten other players yet, they can put another player in their place without much issue.
  • Norrie out in straight sets. Radacanu comfortable winner in straight sets.

Fearnely v Berrettini on now. Jake narrowly lost the first set but a break up in the 2nd

Very entertaining tennis. I can see Jake getting into the top 50 and maybe a few places better in the not too distant future. Pretty quick rise up the rankings so far

'7 Oct 2024 — Fearnley's climb from 646th to 98th in the world rankings in 2024 is the fifth biggest annual rise into the top 100 since 2000, according to ATP statistics.'

    Current ranking 57

Fearnley serves for the set at 5-3. Drops two set points and then gets broken to the delight of the Italian crowd. Back on serve at 5-4.
  • Lost the resulting tie break 7-0. Crumbled in the face of his opponent and a raucous home crowd.

He looked beat - either an injury or just the intensity of the match. I commented about how much he was sweating when we started watching it and it was only 2 - 2 and only 20 degrees.

HIs rise to 52 (as he will be on Monday) since last year has been very quick, so maybe still getting used to the intensity of the matches against top 50 opponents?
