Clean Sheets

  • I think there’s a lot of rose tinted views coming out here. Orient controlled midfield today. If that was by design on Charltons part then fair play but I don’t think it was.
Possession alone won’t win games of football.
Controling midfield and therefore possession will win you more games of football than not. Yesterday our defence was magnificent but for a long period we were reduced to hoofing it clear and our midfield was unable to prevent it coming straight back. Nothing will convince me that was in Jones’s plan.

Leicester won the premiership with an average 42% possession.

Perhaps listen to the NTT20 post match podcast for an entirely different perspective.
  • One of the first things I thought of after we'd stopped celebrating.
Clean sheets are no good, don't concentrate on a strong defence, just score loads of goals.
It doesn't matter if you concede 3 every game, just make sure you score 4.

The best teams and teams that win most games as a general rule have most possession and control the game as a result. There are of course always exceptions but unless it’s proved to me otherwise I’m sticking that good teams retain the ball. You can’t score a goal without having the ball.

To be honest I’ve never read anything more obvious.
  • We had loads of possession under KR. Never did anything with it. Other teams just made us play in front of them and we couldn't break them down. Exactly what we did to Orient yesterday. We haven't played like that too much this season but in a one off winner takes all game like a playoff final when you go a goal up and have a defence as solid as ours its the natural way to make everything of your advantage.

When we havent done this in the past its been called poor game management.

Funny how some people just like to dig out others.

Ok, I admit I was wrong. You can gain promotion by keeping 25 clean sheets, but don't deny that the 3 play off matches were not a football spectacle.

I prefer to see attacking football & yes, winning 4-3 to me is much better than winning 1-0.

And unless we strengthen hugely in the summer we wont win many games 1-0 in the Championship. And I haven't forgotten that our record of winning games once we concede first is virtually the mirror opposite of our record once we score first.

Interesting times coming up this summer.

It took me absolutely bloody ages to get my brain to shift from "KR = Kayne Ramsay? No, that's not right" to work out who you actually meant there.

We’ve more chance of winning 1-0 nil in the championship than 4-3 atm.
