Am I the only one who personally thinks Nathan Jones doesn’t want Small. Look back to the start of the season he was always meant to be a backup to Edwards only really got a chance when Ramsay and Watson both got injured at the same time, even then Zach, REG and TC were played there before the infamous Northampton game where small started at RWB. At 19 obviously would be stupid to not offer him a contract because of his massive resale potential and what he can become but feels very much like a Dobson situation offer him a salary and role that values him as a squad player and if he signs it great but if he moves on we have someone to come in who Jones would prefer
I don’t think so. Jones was the one who brought Small in, as they’d worked together previously. He simply didn’t play well enough at the start of the season, Edwards was better on the left so Small only played when he got injured. Small got given a chance on the right at Huddersfield and it didn’t work, we then tried other options which didn’t work, at Northampton we had no other options so we tried it again and it worked. Since then he’s been a starter every game until his recent injury.
I think Jones would definitely prefer to keep Small than sign a replacement, though we are probably shopping for wing backs anyway even if he stays
Of course I would like him to stay but its worth remembering that he won’t find as much space and freedom in The Championship as he does in league one. Will he be as effective ? I doubt it. He’s young and I could easily be wrong but I’m not convinced he’s a desperate loss should he decide to depart.
Same with TC unfortunately, with the big games (against better full backs) he seems to fade, I think he'll find it very difficult in the Championship. They're both still young & TC stepped up last season so hopefully can do so again.

There will be more space in behind in the championship. Think that’s a development area for both, they are both good when you get the ball to their feet, but I’d like to see them run in behind more next season. TC did it a lot at the start of the season but recently he’s been all about ball to feet and 1v1 at the full back instead
I spoke personally to Thierry and asked him if he’s signing a contract to stay and he said he’s staying at Charlton. He may have said it just to pacify me his words were it’s already done. Don’t shoot the messenger.
Just a reminder that George Dobson, Alfie May and Corey Blackett-Taylor, all told me they would stay at Charlton, shook my hand on it, and Dobson & CBT both said its all on the club not them, as they love it here.
All three left.
Alfie May/ CBT was probably a money moves tbf (Charlton making something on them), Dobson didn't return when his previous deal fell through
I don't think that we contacted him re coming back

But this is true even if the best wingers. Doku was out marked during the FA Cup final and found it difficult to impact.
There is room for TC to improve, but he is already a very good player. Watch this space.

I think we signed Edwards to be backup to both Small and Gillesphey, but it just turned out Edwards got in and played so well he was undroppable.

Not sure about that, we needed more than one LWB and giving Edwards a 4 year deal shows we rated him highly.

If Nathan didn't want him he wouldn't have been offered a new contract.

I agree, I'm not saying we never expected Edwards to play - maybe competition for Small at LWB and Gillesphey at LCB is a better word for it than backup.

We need to offer him a new deal to get compensation I think? Same as we have for others in the past.
That said, I completely disagree with Crispywood and think Jones would be delighted if Small stayed.

Just a feeling start of the season he was meant to be a deputy to Edwards, and been hooked early in a few games this season. Think we’ve done it purely to get compensation for him. Feels like a Dobson situation offered him a deal but nowhere near what he wants or guaranteed him regular football

Most of the games he was substituted was to allow a second striker to come on and change Godden's role imo. Although there were definitely some where it wasn't working for him, but that has to be expected in a new position he is developing in.

"Regular football"?! The man played 39 of our league games last season, and there's no way we're getting a more explosive player for less than what we'd be offering Small. He should be, imo, a player that we try and retain and continue to develop. He's 20 years old! I really really doubt this viewpoint of yours is accurate

He was a first team regular in a side that just got promoted, he's young with a lot of potential and he won't cost us a transfer fee. There's no way at all that Jones will not want to keep him when we need to build a decent squad, not lose players from it.
That said i think it's pretty clear that Small is assessing his options, and i'd personally be quite surprised if he stays.
I agree I think if he was staying it would have been announced by now. Unfortunately I think the lad will be making a big mistake by leaving somewhere he can develop
Hopefully a hefty pay increase has been offered. Get it done and done quickly - this lad will be worth a lot in a season or two. His maturity belies his youth (as I have said before) and we are only just seeing the early sparks nowhere yet near the finished article.
