  • I’d rather we only sign players who are likely to improve the first team. No point signing players just to provide competition to a team that will likely struggle without improvements.

Bowyer always said he’d only bring in players who are going to improve us, would like to think Jones has similar thoughts.

Not sure he’d be an improvement on Gillesphey so a no for me. All shirts in the team need to be up for grabs, no benchwarmers.
  • If we can bring him in I would be quite happy

I reckon our first signing won’t be far off.  I too heard we had 4 already done a couple of months ago.
You're virtually spot on Swisdom. That's exactly virtually what's happened.
  • Famewo wasn't fantastic for us and he wasn't s**t either.

The injury record is the major concern. Only 13 league games last season and 17 during 22/23.

Season of 23/24 though he did play 35 league games, just have to hope he's that player if we did sign him.
  • We should be looking to bring in players who are better than we have.
Famewo in my opinion is no better than what we have plus he's injury prone.

    It's  a no from me.

Virtual? Are all of our signings going to be AI?
    And twins too!

    Please no
agreed, during his spell with us he looked pretty ordinary, in fact I'd almost forgotten all about him .. there are better options for us in central defence
  • From the comments from their local paper, It does seem Famewo was playing well when he was injured last autumn.

Sheffield Wednesday are set to be without defender Akin Famewo for the long term after the in-form defender was the subject of scans following an injury sustained at Portsmouth on Friday.
The former Norwich City defender has started Wednesday’s last eight matches in the Championship, earning rave reviews for impressive performances on the left of their back three. He would have started the campaign in the Owls line-up ahead of Di’Shon Bernard were it not for a small injury picked up on the eve of the season - he had to sit out their opening three fixtures.

Famewo was handed a cruel injury blow last year after picking up a serious issue away at Portsmouth after tremendous start to the season, and ever since then he’s been on the road to recovery.

    So called “twins”
  • Don't think he's as good as we first thought and has suffered badly with injuries since we last had him. Not sure he is better than Gilly either tbh.

We need depth but that is one position I'd be hoping we could add some real quality rather than a back up
Problem is it might be the toughest to find quality in today’s market. Every team wants to play out from the back so left sided centre backs will cost a premium if they are really good and there aren’t as many as them vs other premium value positions like strikers
  • Liam Thompson, Derby left back £1.4 million

Liam Thompson, Derby left back £1.4 million
Out of contract but he’s 23 so that would be compensation?

Edit: looks like he’s a battling CM who’s versatile and can cover wing back. Believe he’s right footed but good with his left.
  • The only description I can see around Famewo's injury has it being called a "big one", that alone makes it a no, shame as sounds like he's come on a bit since we had him on loan.
  • Seems a no brainer to get a solid player in for free and add depth, and can't imagine he will want ridiculous wages

Add in the Jones link and that he last played for us In a terrible team

Yes I'd love to add real quality but that's hard to do and this seems like a good team building signings

All managers say they’ll only bring in players that improve the squad. Given his experience since leaving us I’d say AF is a very decent option for us for no fee. All well and good saying we need no benchwarmers but we have nine bench places to fill next season so plenty of bench to keep warm. Only issue is his injury record but every player is only one game from an injury. We’ll need to trust Jones.

  • Thought Famewo was decent the first season with us, then poor the second season.  And both were a level below.

Will admit that a centre back could be better at 26 than 21, 22, but I'm still in the 'no thanks/hope we can do better' camp.

Famewo is better than McIntyre so this would be improving the squad. The debate is whether him and Gillesphey as 2 options is good enough for this level, I would say it is. Gillesphey has improved and his performances in the 2nd half of the season suggested to me he can make the step up, Famewo has been a championship player for a while

Injuries is another question mark but if it gets approval from Dr Will then I am fine with it
Realistically, with our budget I can't see us finding 2 better left footed CBs to fill our squad than Gillesphey and Famewo.

If we have money to spend, then there are other parts of the pitch where we need to "splash the cash", not defence.
    What's our budget?
You can have an educated guess if this is a genuine rumour.

The wage budget needs to be doubled to match Preston. That’s all of the TV money spent. To match the likes of Stoke City & WBA it needs to be tripled/quadrupled. So the owners need to chuck in an extra £20m on top of the extra tv money. And so on.

Thought we only had 4-5 players championship ready players from last season how many players wages are we matching up with, with the TV money new kit deal and increase in ticket prices I hope the billionaire owners can swallow some money and make a go of it otherwise we sink and it will all be  pointless, I reckon we need to spend atleast 10-20 million on 5-6 players one of them being a classy pacey striker to even compete and stay in the division mid tablish.
  • Wednesday now under a transfer embargo, assume that means they can’t renew Famewo’s contract

How much did Oxford, Portsmouth and Derby spend last season? Doubt they spent that much combined and they all managed to stay up

We obviously need to spend, but it’s not going to be silly money. The 11m or so from TV money is a healthy start and the owners I’m sure will put some more in on top so that we have a competitive transfer and wage budget. Our budget needs to be competitive, Jones will do the rest
