'I couldn't feel my legs for the first 20 minutes at Wembley'

Charlton Athletic keeper Mannion a clean sheet king in League One play-offs

unsurprising but no less dismal is the absolute deluge of email drivel from substack the minute one signs up
and it's continuing after unsubscribing from everything that isn't Cawley
all too familiar American attitude to rules, regulations and customer relations

He probably couldn’t with the size of those goal keeping gloves on.

That’s exactly why I didn’t choose to sign up to Substack.

Love that Bowyer was prepared to tell the EFL guy to his face what he thought of their role in the ESI situation.

What an absolutely fantastic piece , this is the type of stuff the likes of The Athletic should be putting out not puff pieces about Hollywood FC.

Well worth my subscription to Rich for that interview alone.

Superb article, interview with a proper Charlton legend. Just confirms what an arsehole Roland was.

Thanks, i decided to delete the substack app, was getting too much interference with comments, cross selling into other substack accounts etc and I couldn't work out how to turn them off.

Decided the best way to see Rich's material is to read it off the emails i now get having subscribed

Great interview that. I wonder when Richard will interview Karel Fraeye though?
  • Just signed up for a nifty. Well worth it.

I think the fifty quid people are paying - and I’m not criticising anybody- fit something we used to get for free - like a lot of sporting events on tv- is not only a sign of the times but also puts into perspective the season ticket price increases and how everybody was up in arms about that but not this

Everyone was disappointed about the SLP closing and someone losing their job and people are willing to pay to help him out, that's very different to a ST price increase in my opinion. We only got Cawley's reporting for free because someone else was paying

It’s a totally different proposition. £50 for quality independent journalism to support a professional writer isn’t comparable to match day / season ticket pricing.
But if we’re simply talking affordability then £5 for annual membership of CAST is the bargain of the century.

If Cawley can get enough cash from this venture to give himself a decent income, then that is good enough for me.

This model is growing, but if people are willing to pay for good quality content then I don't see an issue with it. It may not be for everyone. The subscription model ensures people earn a regular income, rather than offering a one time payment.

The SLP in paper or online would be free due to advertisers covering the cost, but I bet the quality of content will be of a higher standard now as he has to protect and grow his own brand, but probably doesn't have a jobsworth telling him how to do his job or have to answer to the powers that be. The shackles are off.

Interesting to see him mention specific amounts that players were earning under Bowyer (Lyle Taylor £6k a week, £4k towards Cullen’s loan etc), I don’t remember that sort of detail ever being in a SLP article.

That was Bowyer specifically, so not sure that's a Rich change necessarily. He's definitely a tad more opinionated though and not just reporting news but saying what he thinks of it, a good change in my opinion

Is frustrating having to rein substack back in and work out how to stop it sending you emails on all sorts of shite you haven't asked for

For those who prefer a printed paper there is an alternative although I have signed up to Rich's Substack myself.

It was, but I imagine Rich has been told similar things before but couldn’t or wouldn’t share them.
