Scott Carson

  • He’s basically been retired for six years.
  • Does he get a medal for all those trophies  ? I thought you had to play in a certain amount of games.

They relaxed the rules for goalkeepers as they would never play as back up but are still an important member of the squad
  • What are we saying?

Scott Carson and Rob elliot are smart and emotionally intelligent ex Charlton British born keepers.

They know how to get paid large sums of money for doing next to nothing.

It is not a sad story and they have not wasted their talent by sitting on a bench.

They are still laughing. Their wives likely worship the grounds they walk on.
  • Carson played over twice as many games as Elliot.

And there's a difference being finishing your career as a designated 3rd/4th keeper at Pep's City, in their glory days, surrounded by world class players and coaches, winning medal and medal, and Elliot's career where he spent 9 season in his prime at a mediocre Newcastle side, wining nothing.
  • Best goalkeeper we have had imo.

    The ultimate first world problem.
  • He was a decent keeper. But I liked Nicky Johns, Dean Kiely and Charlie Wright above Carson.
  • He is surely set up for life financially, so there is a positive box ticked there, and stopped Man City from receiving a 116th pointless charge.

However, I think it's a waste of a talent, and a sad indictment of the modern game, to leave him hidden away from consistently showcasing his talents in the Premier League/EFL for the last 6 years.

Don't blame the player for taking this option.
I know what you mean, but at least he played 500-odd games first before taking the cushy third choice goalkeeper at a top club job.

Rather than someone like Stuart Taylor who was basically a professional backup his whole career.

20yr career.  75 games.  So averaged 3.5 per season

He played 30 game for Arsenal at the start of his career, the most he played for any club!

While he was well paid, there's got to be a sense of regret about his career.

He'll be like a first World War veteran. He'll never talk about it.
  • There are few better jobs in life than being a third choice keeper for a Premier league team.

Maybe but being first choice keeper in a PL team is definitely one of the better ones

Yes but then you have to actually go out and earn your money 50 times a season. A third choice keeper is literally paid a fortune just to train.
  • Also he makes a mockery of the old pro argument, "Put your medals on the table!"

Who has had the better career, Alan Shearer or Carson?  Medals would say Carson by a country mile, but in some ways he is a paid supporter.

Alan Shearer had a career that he is rightly so very proud of.

However, as he's said it himself, he might get dementia at an earlier age due to the long term impact of constantly heading a football.

He was a professional athlete but parts of his body will still suffer earlier than expected and take additional strain.

Carson will probably live for a longer age.

I'd rather be in Carsons paid supporter shoes.

Getting paid for doing very little sounds good to me.

However, whilst not playing they have still had to be very disciplined, that in itself can be commended.
  • Best goalkeeper we have had imo.
Best goalkeeper we have had was Sam Bartram imo.
Easy to forget he was runner up to Tom Finney in Footballer of the year about 1955.

Before my time so unable to comment.

Carson was POTY in our relegation season, that does it for me as the best goalkeeper since I have been going in '76.  Thuram comes a close second......
  • Easy to look like a good keeper in shit teams
when you’re not busy and have to produce that’s the hardest thing

  • Would you:

sludge it around the country, getting abuse from supporters behind the goal, playing out of portacabins, facilities built in the 70s for decent, comfortable wage etc

    or

Train in world class facilities, hang around with world class players, jet around the world on tours in first class, getting medals for money that will set you and your family up for life

    ?

for me it’s a no brainer and fair play to the likes of Carson.

He was a decent keeper. But I liked Nicky Johns, Dean Kiely and Charlie Wright above Carson.
Others before my time, but he was a more complete keeper than deano, who was a brilliant shot stopper and not much else.

He could probably just give them £30k each to not ask I guess.

No way was he better than Tony Caig, Ben Roberts and Dean Bouzanis
