Puts to bed the myths, oft repeated, that "there was still room for more" and "the only league ground never filled to capacity" (Pre 1992)

    TBH, from the newsreel footage

it looked dangerously overcrowded. We'll never know exactly how many were there, I've seen 68000 to near 90000 quoted.
Is it weird that I can watch a match from 30 years before I was born and still get pissed off that we lost?
I have spent a fair amount of time during my life which began in 1986 feeling irked about that final day of the season defeat to Blackburn that cost us promotion straight back to the top flight in 1958.

Not really, probably a better view up there than stuck at the back of the East terrace.
Bear in mind that the East Terrace continued well beyond the touchline, and so those in the top corner would have had a good part of their view of the pitch obscured by the Covered End roof. If there was still room, they would have stood elsewhere.

It's very likely there were more than 75,000 in the ground, but it's also very likely that there wasn't room for more.

    Rubbish, there's much more space!

    On the Covered End roof...
Looked like the roof of the covered end was in better nick than when I started going in 1969....and it was in the same condition when we left in 1985. It smacks of a quick fix to repair bomb damage, "which will be fully rebuilt " when the war ends. Not unusual, I worked near the docks in the 90's we had temporary buildings which had been there since the blitz. Still, wouldn't change the old covered end for anything.

Looks like it was taken at Molineux, in front of the old Waterloo Road stand.

Not quite correct. It was Charlton's first ever league game at the Valley. We played at The Valley the year before in non league.

I remember back in the days when CP had a forward named Gerry Queen and the headline in the Evening Standard (remember that rag?) was Queen scores for Palace.
