Surely they wouldn't have to "offer" anything. There is a defined compensation package under EPPP so they can "buy" him for whatever that is and we have no say whatsoever.
Shame, but once again out famous academy gets pillaged for its best talent due to the nonsense of a regulation bought in by Ged Roddy who for some reason we then employed.
Clubs do still pay for youth players in some cases though. Man City have just signed the 15 year old son of Danny Cadamarteri from Sheff Weds for a reported 1.5m, and Man U have signed a 16 year old centre back from Southampton.
Unfortunately that's football. If kids want to walk away from clubs like us and Southampton who have proven track records of promoting kids to the first team then so be it.
Fair enough, I can o lying assume Cadamateri demanded higher compensation was paid as Man City wouldn't pay more than they need to understand the law, despite them being minted.
City agreed a deal to sign him without it going to compensation.
Not sure why, but i assume it was because there were other clubs interested in him so they just outbid them. But then it's a weird one as if he said he only wanted to sign for City, they could just offer nothing and leave it up to the authorities to determine how much they pay, which would probably be less than 1.5m.
I can't profess to be an expert in the players themselves, but I like the fact we seem to be going for players in their early 20s rather than early 30s journeyman types - hopefully gets more.energy in the team, means we're planning more long term than short, and they'll likely have better resale value too.
Now I've said that, watch us sign Shelvey or Victor Moses or something.
The team needs reinforcements a s a p else we will go straight down. Take the Wrexham away game. We were a bit under strength, but were soundly beaten by a faster, bigger, more skilful side, a side that finished second in L1.
I m o that game was a benchmark for what we can expect this coming season. I also saw us beaten at Rotherham and Peterborough, two mediocre sides. We just cannot afford such lapses from now on. The core strength of our side is decent, BUT we will not know how decent until the season starts. The thing is, once the season starts, IF we are not good enough, there will be a long wait until we can strengthen. I do not want to see us playing catch up from way down the pack.
Far better to speculate on new players NOW rather than later. Midfield and attack need an overhaul. We will get suspensions and injuries along the way and will need a stronger squad than we have now. @_MrDick's post is worrying. If factual, it's air of complacency is not good enough. We will not need to spend silly millions, but well scouted reinforcements who will enhance the squad are needed NOW.
And it starts……
we also beat Wycombe away and Huddersfield at home 4-0. Both were in the play offs at the time
we so need reinforcements but seeing the season starts in 2 months, we don’t need them NOW. It would be good to have most of the squad sorted for pre season
I agree. And our fortunes next season won't solely depend on what we do in the transfer market. The state of others squads needs to be taken into account before jumping to conclusions. Too many unknowns at the moment for me to give my expectations for the season ahead yet.
Saying our current squad would get trounced every week is easy, and pointless because we know that will never be put to the test. There will be more transfer activity before the season starts and I'm not interpreting our activity so far as evidence of complacency.
I don't mind us signing older players aslong as they aren't like Ben Watson. If they can come in and do a job for a season with potential championship experience and help mentor the young players we got then it isn't an issue.
What we don't want is someone coming and having one last paid season before retiring and giving no effort at all.
Surprised at the "if we don't strengthen we will go down" comments
Since December we were the 2nd most in form team behind record breaking and big spending Birmingham in our division and we just set a record for the clean sheets in a season. So we clearly aren't shit.
Since then we lost Little Terry to Preston. Exciting talent but very replaceable
Obviously we need to strengthen to be more competitive but there really is no need for all the dramatics just yet. We have a new CEO who is known for excellent transfer dealings. A new head of recruitment who we all know can pull a rabbit from a hat.
Who knows if the lad will make it or not anyway. I remember when Man Utd poached that CB off us, never heard about him again.
Yeah we’ll see in time, it’s gone both ways with players who’ve made similar moves.
McGinty hasn’t had the career that would have been expected, neither has Timmy Abraham.
Sarmiento, Palmer, Beadle and Ramazani all seem to be doing well enough and would have surely broken into our first team had they stayed and attracted big offers.
We also have another two recent ones in Chizzy Ezenwata who’s been scoring goals in Chelsea’s academy, and Lescond Yeutembip who joined Newcastle nearly a year ago.
Beadle wouldn’t have received anything like the quality of coaching or the quality of loan opportunities had hd stayed at Charlton - we had just replaced our respected first team goalkeeping coach with Millwall academy goalkeeping coach and we’re sending out keepers to lower division teams in Scotland on loan
For me, the position we need the most is center forward! Some that can play 30 plus games in the championship!
Problem is that the majority of teams in the league are also looking for exactly that same thing and will be very reluctant to let any go that they do have on the books.
I expect we are definitely looking for one or more but might be some time before we hear anything.
The Consensus after reading the last 20 pages is Karoy Anderson is in the 20 man Squad and knowing Nathan Jones as we do now will get game time nearly every match. If we are going to average 30% to 35% possession especially in away matches then Karoy will be seeing plenty of action.
I really hope the "best version of himself", Sonny Carey the attacking goal scoring midfielder turns up from the end of last season to challenge Berry and another oven ready Championship midfielder is required to compete with Docherty.
The Triumvirate CB's were the rock that gave CAFC the 20+ clean sheets so why move Ramsey to a traditional RB or RWB after the solidity came from Jones, Ramsey and especially goal scoring Macca who was a revelation over the last 5 months of the season.
Excited at the step up on Small, who will probably be the polar opposite; steady Champ player but no X-factor but we move on from Thierry. With Watson going as well we need right defensive and right sided attacking player assuming that TC will be used more on the left ?
I have confidence that Big Phil and little Nathan will bring in players to strengthen not weaken this team, BUT we may still have to take some risks as there are no guarantees when we can't or won't compete to get some of our targets as players will go for the best package for them and their agent.

This the is the key for me , love Godden and he'll absolutely have a role to play but I'd like for us to make a "marquee" signing at striker and potentially another new arrival as depth so we aren't left in a situation where we're starting youngsters. Ideally Kanu would go out on loan and we'd find a way to offload Ahadme.
Also agree with comments above. We will easily stay up even if we don't recruit, around 10th-16th If we don't sign anyone, we may even get promoted again if we make a couple of signings to add to what we have got. People are severely underestimating us it seems, especially the bookies!
Things working in our favour:-
- Team spirit, no other club has the momentum we have right now - Clean sheets, we rarely leave stains, and when we do, it was just unlucky - Nathan Jones - no manager celebrates wins like our gaffer - The Valley - difficult place to go to, pyros - Our planning - The people in place have plans.
I would also add it could even be a bad idea to add new signings and look to replace the lesser peformers. We could disrupt the current squad and hinder our chances. How would it look if players started being replaced. Could impact the mood of the changing room.
Show some faith, we will pay what WE believe a player is worth.

I agree that we stay up but anything above 16th will be a bonus. Talk of back to back promotions though is very difficult and also very unlikely

I agree with the general sentiment but if we don’t replace smalls pace / ability to go past players with a couple of players who can do similar, we will struggle massively
I think we need to introduce some kind of sarcasm indicator on here, because some people clearly can't work out what is for themselves
Oh wow, what a groundbreaking idea! A sarcasm indicator? Genius! Maybe we can make it a blinking neon sign that pops up every time someone makes a joke too subtle for the sarcasm-challenged. Or better yet—mandatory sarcasm training modules.

Think people are underestimating the quality of the championship. Although I do think we stay up purely because of how brilliant the staff and infrastructure are in comparison to other championship clubs. However, in terms of the playing squad we are severely lacking obviously we will be signing players so need to take everything with a pinch of salt and opinions will massively change come end of the window. But we have only 6 players who have played at this level. 2 of them weren’t deemed good enough for it, 2 of them are well into the 30’s and the other 2 got relegated. Obviously some players can develop and make the step up but even Wrexham slapped us around with their journeymen of a squad I think people who are expecting anything other than relegation or a relegation battle are being optimistic
For me, the position we need the most is center forward! Some that can play 30 plus games in the championship!
Problem is a decent championship level striker isn't going to be cheap. It's why i think we'll probably look at free transfers for most of the other positions we need, so the majority of the budget can go on a couple of strikers, as we need two, not just the one.
Kanu and Mbick are not good enough yet, there's question marks on Leaburn's fitness, Ahadme will surely leave and Chuks already left.
I really think Ahadme will step up in the championship. He was too good last season to be playing in League one. That's why Nathan was saving him for the Championship.
I appreciate Everyone’s optimism but realistically three other regular championship sides will have to be relegated in order for us to stay up, as neither Wrexham or Birmingham will be going down too. It’s a big ask
In league one memorable goals like Berry at Wycombe, or the one Orient scored against us, or tricksy full skill goals like the one Leaburn scored (at the Jimmy Seed end, forgot the opposition) come along about every ten games, but in the Championship such goals come along much more often, like every four or five games. We need to be able to cope with, or overcome, or equalise the unstoppables next season. If we are full on defensive then one worldy will beat us more often than not.
Without wanting to mention Millwall again but using them as an example, if we could find a striker with the profile of Mihailo Ivanovic who they brought in last summer for £2.8m that would be ideal.

Sheffield Wednesday look in a huge mess unless Chasiri is bought out and quickly - I doubt any of the out of contract players will stay given they risk not getting paid, Rohl is being linked with Leicester or Boro, and they are under a transfer embargo for any new signings (who again won't want to sign for a club who might not pay them anyway).

I think this one is sarcasm lads - Sarcasm-O-meter reading 9/10
A Chuks type "finisher " would be useful for the squad, especially as we can have 9 subs. Perfect for an older player, someone with physical presence who can come off the bench to shake things up, someone not injury prone, but perhaps without the legs to play full 90s.
We had both Chuks and Hylton available last season.

wonder where we are scouting in Europe these days? I watch a fair bit of Bundesliga 2 and some great players knocking about
