Air India Plane Crash

Terrible news from India today, what with the plane that crashed shortly after take off on its way to Gatwick with 53-Britons on board. Not just those in the Air, but the plane crashed into accommodation used by Doctors, so you'd imagine there are wounded / fatalities on the ground too

Amazingly it seems that one British man who was onboard the plane has somehow survived. Be interesting to hear how it happened in the first place (both the crash, and the man surviving), as from footage the plane just doesnt seem to get any lift.

  • It’s just awful, so many lives wiped out.
  • Awful news. I know there are videos of the crash, but I REALLY don't want to watch such incidents.

I'm sure you mean it in a nice and inquisitive manner, but it feels a bit soon to be interested in the specific details. Sadly, friends of friends were on the flight and are in a real state of shock.

RIP. Seeing it's destination being London Gatwick sends an extra chill down the spine (of reality).
  • Absolutely dreadful. Miraculously one survivor. RIP

Video on BBC News, only just made it to 625ft before the mayday way sent, then just came back down, looked like the nose was up, but unable to gain height, absolutely horrific, thoughts and prayers for all involved...

The Dreamliner is a safe aircraft. This is the first crash i think. But Boeing have a growing reputation for cutting corners. We have to see what the cause is. RIP all those that have lost their lives.

    A modern 787 too - i'm sure we'll all flown on those.

There is some speculation on the internet which has now reached the BBC. Why were the wheels down, the flaps retracted, and the nose pointing so high up? Not surprising the plane stalled and fell from the sky.

I flew in the Dreamliner when I went to India.
    Terrible crash.
    RIP the victims.
  • The experts on X are saying the flaps are in the wrong position for a takeoff.  But others have said it could be a stall or an overweight plane unable to get sufficient lift.  Really sad story
    RIP to the fallen

What possible other manner could he mean it in?
  • Awful and scary as you don’t expect the best planes with good airlines to have these sort of crashes in this day and age

RIP to the victims and families I’m not an aviation expert unlike a lot of people on twatter but the plane  didn’t get any lift at all did it get to the right speed for take off considering the weight of the plane, im sure we will find out when the black box is found

    I find that absolutely unbelievable.

  • Expert interviewed on the BBC suggesting the pilots retracted the flaps instead of the landing gear, resulting in immediate loss of lift.

I think suggestions that the flaps were initially in the wrong position are most likely inaccurate. The pilots will have followed a checklist before attempting take-off and should have confirmed the flaps position at this stage. Obviously the flight recorder will confirm this once recovered.

Seems incredibly unlikely the plane was overweight, it wasn't even full.

An absolute tragedy that, if the expert is correct, seems unfathomable with the amount of training pilots have to go through.

Now that really is a  miracle.
  • The sole survivor appears to be a true miracle. To escape from that impact and fireball with barely a scratch on him. Even his phone was unbroken walking out the hospital, not to mention a ticket untouched by fire.

I cannot get my head round this. This is a miracle. Awful tragedy.

Regards of flaps being incorrect, surely there would be on board warning systems to let pilots know the flaps are in the wrong position?

  • R I P all those who died
  • My thoughts and prayers are with those who lost their lives and their families. Terrible tragedy RIP
  • RIP. An absolute nightmare.
