Went out at 12.45 when India were 450/5. Came back at 2.10pm to find them all out for 471 & us about to bat.

    Then it rains.

Oh look, difficult conditions to bat in.  If only that was forecast before the toss....

Will we survive the follow on  ?  Would India want to put us in again ?

please please let’s not see Crawley in the England side again . He gets chance after chance and the majority of the time he fails. His shot selection is shocking at times but I bet he still gets picked for The Ashes tour . It’s getting ridiculous

Smartest thing the Aussie commentators ever did was pretend that Crawley is a brilliant player. Convinced England selectors that the Aussies don’t want to face him.

India have against all the odds managed to find a captain as  much of a prick as virat

And I love India as a country,  the people are brilliant.

But their cricket captains are not.

Well done Ollie Pope 100 no at the close.
Probably the best I’ve seen him play.
He looked assured throughout and I normally think he’s a walking wicket.

Ha, why do you say that? I didn't see any controversy today.

Think Root just lost a bit of concentration after Pope's 100.

Lucky with Brook's "no ball" wicket

But yet again we have lost overs today.....even though we played until 7.13 due to the rain delay.

11 today. 5 yesterday. If that continues then by the end of the Test match that will probably amount to a whole session's worth.

Funny though, because as I've said before, it only seems to matter on the last day. We've seen England win in Pakistan in the gloom where on ALL other days stumps would have been called a good 30-40 mins beforehand.

And then there was the draw in Cardiff in an Ashes Test. Last hour started at 5.52 and England just got their noses in front around 6.30 and with 10 mins being taken up for change of innings the Aussies knew the game was up. If that was on any other day of the Test match then play would have finished at 6.30.

Yep two top nations looking like they’re matching each other. Seems a very good pitch, I’m sure there’ll be matches later on in the series that will be more entertaining for the neutral.

A pope century vs India pretty much puts to bed any argument he’s not a number 3.

Yes, this is the best Test Match I can remember (only watch England) for a long time.
I mean it's actually looking like a proper Test Match that will go to day 5.

Was a school of thought at Headingley yesterday that Crawley could be dropped soon with Jamie Smith moving up to opener and bringing in Jacob Bethel. Would make sense why Smith is in the team as keeper, considering he doesn’t even keep for Surrey.

Smith is not an opening batsman though and it would be unfair on him.
If Crawley continues to fail then another opening batsman has to be given a go.
As for Bethell he will have to be patient and wait his turn.

I agree about Smith as doing both jobs, this early in his Test career, is a big ask. I really wouldn't be surprised if Bethell isn't given an opportunity to open. He is technically sound and an extremely gifted cricketer who had never batted in the top 4 before being thrown in at 3 for England and averaged 52 doing so.

In that series in New Zealand he also had to come in with the score on 9, 1, 12, 9, 32 & 8 so, on each and every occasion, he was facing a new ball. Duckett never opened in red ball before being asked to do so and he has proven to be a big plus doing so.

Bethell replacing Crawley makes more sense I agree.
Plus he could hardly do any worse tbf.

Siraj looks the kind of bowler it would be great fun to score a lot of runs against.

Brook should have a loud word with Gill to ask him to keep Siraj on.

Could see Bethell having a decent go at opening - hes a good leaver, and doesn't go chasing the ball too much.

Oh dear - what a silly thing to do on 99.

    Threw his wicket away there

So so daft to do that, didn't need to take it on in that situation but I guess wanting to smoke a 6 to get to a hundred on your home ground was just too tempting.

So, while lots of people focus on concerns about England's batting make-up and order, it's good to see England continuing their run of making 400 in every Test innings this summer...

We have plenty of decent batsman in the middle order.
Crawley is a concern though which is why he's being discussed.

Sudharsan caught by Crawley after Duckett dropped him.

If you add the triple century Sudharsan would have made, that must make Zak MOTM.

90-2 at close, India lead by 96.
