England Cricket 2025

Time for a new thread. So, what do we have to look forward to in 2025?

Well, for a start, the Men have the Champions Trophy in February/March. The main focus of attention for me this year, however, are likely to be the Test Series against each of the two big guns - India at home and the Ashes in Australia. It doesn't get much tougher than that even if India have won just one of their last seven Tests and the fact that they appear to have become rather over reliant on Jaiswal with the bat and Bumrah with the ball. Rohit is having an absolute nightmare with the bat having scored just 162 runs in the last 15 innings and rumours have it that he is contemplating retirement. That would follow swiftly in the shoes of Ashwin who announced that in the middle of the current series in Australia. The Indians clearly aren't a happy camp at present and it might be a great time to play them for that reason.

  • Main concern for me is the fitness of Stokes.
A fully fit Stokes who can bowl gives the team a perfect balance.
Stokes not being able to bowl will always leave us short in one department or another.
  • If India make the right selection decisions I feel they'll be far too strong for England. But that's a weirdly big if right now

Can't see them dropping Rohit and Kohli as much as it needs to happen. They'd stand a better chance not bringing Siraj either because he'll just lose it again like he did with Head. Jaiswal in English conditions will be interesting to see.
  • Looks like Rohit is going to be dropped for the final Test. It feels like a changing of the guard is happening, with Kohli also struggling.
  • Australia have dropped Mitch Marsh and brought in Beau Webster for hit Test debut

Australia have dropped Mitch Marsh and brought in Beau Webster for hit Test debut
Unusual to have so many debuts in such a big series. Especially one which Australia are winning.

I see he passes the Aussie Life height test at 6'6, so even taller than Marsh, and the same height as Cam Green.
  • Going to every Test series next year cannot wait for my trip to Oz. Just doing Melbourne & Sydney so praying we’re not 3-0 down by then!
"Joe Root attempts the reverse scoop and is bowled by Starc for 34. England all out for 125, and Australia go 4-0 up."

Australia need to, at the very least, draw this match to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and Marsh has only scored 73 runs (20 in his last 5 innings) and taken 3 wickets in the Series so they probably feel it's a bit of a "free hit" to pick Webster. Both Marsh and Green have had injury problems over the years and for that reason need to find a viable alternative or they will end up in the same situation as ourselves when Stokes is out.
  • The great thing about an Australia-India series is that one or other of them loses. For the final test they both seem to be trying to lose. Knowing our luck they're both sorting out succession plans and will be in top form by the time they play us, but on current showing I'd actually fancy our chances against either. But for now I'll just get some more popcorn and enjoy the show.

  • Pant's innings was quite the watch. Shame it ended so anticlimactically tbh
  • For the good of the wider game, it's good that South Africa have really turned a corner. England have hardly played them in recent years as well.

Quite a new team too, I didn't recognise a few of their players.

  • Australia won the 5th Test by six wickets and the series 3-1 to reclaim the Border Gavaskar Trophy after 10 odd years.

A lot can change in 12 months but next winter’s tour is going to be very tough indeed.

Beau Webster, on debut and in the absence of Green, gave evidence that the can fulfill that all rounders role - top scorer for Australia in the match with 57 (105) and 39* (34) with the bat, 17-5-50-1 with the ball plus two catches in the slips.

MOM Boland showed, once again, that they they have an excellent replacement for one of Starc, Cummins or Hazlewood, in returning 10-76 and 21 wickets at 13.19 in the series.

Konstas is a bit of a "headless chicken" at the moment but the one thing he doesn't lack in self-belief and being on the winning side in both his first two games in international cricket won't do him any harm in that respect. Khawaja continues to struggle.

The Indians' next series is against us and they really are a rudderless ship at the moment and given that cricket is a religion there, the pressure on those players isn't going to subside in the next six months.
  • India look beatable away from home. Australia seem to have a habit of winning games even if they have a collapse in one innings, which is less encouraging. Overall I think the right two teams are in the test final, although Lord's would presumably have preferred India to qualify so they could be more certain of selling all the tickets.

Smith was out twice in the nervous 9990s in this test, 5 short of the milestone in the first innings and then out for 4 in the second. Pretty sure he'll score a run between now and the Ashes, though, so we can't rely on that.
  • Beau Webster played for Upminster (Divisiom 1 Hamro) 2023

Just quickly looked at June and saw a 172 and 145

It appears that he had three spells with them - 2013, 2016 and 2023

Apart from the two openers, all of the Australian top seven, have played club cricket here:

    Labuschagne (Sandwich)
    Smith (Sevenoaks Vine)
    Head (Ventnor)
    Webster (Upminster)
    Carey (East Grinstead)
  • A disappointing game to end series, with the final Test over in less than 3 days, and it's not like a 3 day England game where everything is sped up. What happened to Aussie pitches being tough to bowl on once the ball when soft, as it's been a seamer's paradise. Indeed England's bowlers would have loved this surface.

Sydney used to be a spin dominated ground, but in this game Lyon only bowled 6 overs.
  • Not sure if Jamie Overton will get a 4th over in his current game for the Hurricanes. His current figures are 3-0-54-0

  • 'Interesting' decision by SA to enforce the follow-on against Pakistan.
1 nil up in a 2 test series, the only remote chance Pakistan would have is if they were sent back in to bat. Pakistan bowlers get a nice rest too and an outside chance to bowl again on a wearing wicket. Bonkers decision.

Let’s hope they continue to turn the corner in their *checks fixtures* one Test match scheduled in 2025…
  • Just checking when we last played them in Tests, we played in S Africa in 19/20 and they came here in 2022

We won't tour there until 26/27, so SEVEN years after the last tour. That's an all format tour as well (3 of each format) to "get it out of the way" so it seems.

S Africa are coming here this year for a white ball series this year, but I can't see any Test series in the calendar.

we're planning on going back to South Africa for a visit - and delaying until early 27 for the cricket

Which is what makes a bit of a nonsense of the World Test Championship.

South Africa have played 12 Test matches against Pakistan (2), India (2), West Indies (2), New Zealand (2), Sri Lanka (2) and Bangladesh (2)

England have played 22 matches against India (5), Australia (5), Pakistan (3), New Zealand (3), Sri Lanka (3) and West Indies (3)

India have played 19 matches against England (5), Australia (5), New Zealand (3), Bangladesh (2), South Africa (2) and West Indies (2)

Australia have played 17 matches against England (5), India (5), New Zealand (2), West Indies (2) and Pakistan (3)

So South Africa, who top the table, haven't had to play a single match against England or Australia in that time and have played half of their fixtures against the bottom three sides
  • ah, but maybe they are bottom three because they lost to South Africa...

Not every match & day in each series unfortunately  :D

    2 days of Zimbabwe

1 day at Lords vs India

1 day at The Oval vs India

Hopefully every day at the MCG

2 or 3 days at the SCG

Those three countries (Bangladesh, West Indies and Pakistan) lost 23 matches between them and they accounted for 5 of South Africa's 8 wins. The other South Africa wins came against Sri Lanka (2) and India (1). So that's one win in total for South Africa against England, Australia, New Zealand and India combined during the term of the Championship.
  • Question for people that have done the Ashes down under before or live over there. How easy is it to get tickets for the Ashes in Melbourne & Sydney? I would assume to MCG is slighter easier due to the capacity?

I have registered interest with Cricket Australia for priority tickets but unsure if there's any other avenues? I'm a member of the BarmyArmy but they appear to only have full packages with flight & accom included.

Thanks in advance for any help!
  • I’m planning on doing Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney tests also

never been to oz before so any help with where to stay/tickets etc fire away, cheers
