David "Syd" Lawrence

Just read on the BBC website that he has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease ☹️

Was one of my fave cricketers back in the day and shame he got so badly injured while playing for England.

Comments

  • Wishing him all the best. Not a disease I would associate with cricket.
  • Awful - when his knee quite simply shattered, spectators heard it go, and for those not Cricket minded, the wicket is a long way from the spectators - very serious injury

He was mega quick on his best days

    Horrible diagnosis
  • Former England and Gloucestershire fast bowler David 'Syd' Lawrence has died at the age of 61.

Lawrence, the first British-born black cricketer to represent England, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND), external last year.

He was appointed MBE in the King's Birthday Honours earlier this month after raising money and awareness of the condition.

Lawrence played five Test matches for England and took 625 wickets in 280 matches during a 16-year career at Gloucestershire.

  • RIP Syd. I was literally reading an article about him on Friday,he was saying how he hoped to be able to go and see some cricket before he passed. So sad.

  • Sad, RIP "Syd".
  • Condolences to family friends and Gloucestershire CC and its members. He was a fine county player and deserved his England call up. Also a bloke was friendly to spectators.
  • Horrific disease, RIP Syd.

That was a horrible injury, the worst non head injury I've ever seen on a cricket field.

Life hasn't been fair for him.

  • RIP, great character, great cricketer, great human being.
  • RIP...I absolutely loved this blokes attitude when he played cricket. He would have played many more games for England had it not been for that excruciating injury. Motor Neurone disease is a horrible way to go .Life is so cruel sometimes and has a way of picking on the wrong people.
  • Sad news a fine cricketer and character.

    RIP Syd
  • R I P .. always a wholehearted cricketer, a fighter to the end
