Steve Rider Calls it a Day

Has most recently been covering the BTCC coverage on ITV for the last 16-years - Along with Des Lynam, he's an absolute legend of presenting Sport, basically grew up watching those two on the BBC. I always thought he lost his role with the latter, because the BBC felt he was a bit "unprofessional" when we drew 3-3 with Man Utd

Steve Rider began his career as a junior sports reporter on his local weekly newspaper in south east London before going to work at Hayters sports agency in London.
He reported on the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow for ITV and occasionally presented its flagship sports programme, World Of Sport.
Steve joined BBC Sport in July 1985.
After spending six years presenting Sportsnight, he moved over to his current job as the main presenter of Grandstand, succeeding Desmond Lynam.
In October 1998, he presented Grandstand's special 40th birthday edition from Ascot Racecourse.
Among the major sporting events Steve has worked on for the BBC are the several Summer and Winter Olympic Games, as well as Commonwealth Games.
He is also the frontman for the BBC's golf and motorsport coverage, and his role with Grandstand involves presenting prestigious events such as rugby union's Six Nations Championship.
A regular co-presenter of the BBC Sports Review of the Year, Steve plays golf and has a keen interest in motor racing - particularly the British Touring Car Championship.
He is a life-long supporter of Charlton Athletic FC, but tries not to let it show during Final Score!
Steve lives in Berkshire with his wife and their two children.

Always remember him talking about being the lead presenter on a live sports broadcast, during the 98 playoff and him having a tv on in his setup so he could watch the game. Then they tried to go back to him during the penalties and he refused.5

He was in the same class as me as an infant at Cherry Orchard School, Charlton.5

One of the last sportsmen he interviewed was F4 driver Henry Joslyn. Henry’s father is an investor at Luscid, my business, which you may remember agreed a partnership with Charlton last year.
Henry sports Luscid branding on his car and race suit. Spoke to Steve at the last round after he interviewed Henry and had a good Charlton chat. He’s a properly nice guy and old school broadcast gentleman

A quality sports presenter. Curiously, despite his allegiance, I never thought presenting football was his forte.
An interesting decision to bow out mid-season, rather than at the end of the BTCC championship.0 -

Sat across the aisle from him many years ago on a flight to Atlanta (he was obviously on his way out to cover the golf) but didn’t recognise him until queue for immigration… opportunity missed for a chat.2

Always remember him doing Sportsnight when we won the Soccer Sixes. Definitely had a twinkle in his eye at the end of the programme4

Steve Rider's mother taught me at Invicta, and my father taught him at Roan.
Which, I appreciate, is very much a case of 'So what?'.
