  • Day 5: India need 10 wickets, England need 350 runs.

Couldn’t really get much closer to an ideal fifth day of a Test match.
Except 350 on the last day of a test match is as common as rocking horse shit

Can’t forget the 2022 run chase at Edgbaston though, England could have chased 400 that innings. Our tail know they can score runs too which helps

History says no chance but this team does weird shit, good and bad.

It's going to be some day, whatever the outcome.

    Can't wait!
  • It feels like 100 runs too many to chase IMO. In fact even 250 would have been a coin flip I reckon.
  • If we want to win we've got to score at over 4.5 an over, to knock off the runs before the second new ball. India have to be clear favorites, but any result is possible.
Surely it's less than 4 an over?

    See above
  • Crawley, Pope, Root and Stokes can rely on the memory of beating an India team comprising Bumrah, Siraj, Jadeja, Thakur and Gill, by making 378/3 the last time the two sides met in a Test in England.

With Duckett, Brook, Smith and Woakes, we've arguably got a stronger batting lineup than in that match.

There's no chance at all that England won't set out to win this Test.

As said above, before the 2nd new ball.
    80 overs x 4.5 = 360 runs.

In England's first innings, for context, we scored at 4.61

I'd add that Carse is much more capable at 9 than Broad, who we had in that team, but let's not forget that Bairstow had a day out that day.

I think I'm more optimistic than most about tomorrow. I reckon it's about 60/40 in favour of India.

We seem to lose games we should win but we do the mad unexpected stuff to win a game like this.

Have a feeling we're in a for an all-timer, whatever the result, but now I've said that that ... 4 down by lunch and it's curtains!

  • The market says that we are the outside of three:

    India 2.24
    Draw 3.45
    England 3.70

  • Just hope it doesn’t get rained off

History up until 10-15 years ago said no chance. Recent history shows it is possible.

Just before the close winviz had the draw at 5%, which Broady said was too low.

Heavy rain due overnight. Should be clear by 11am. Might be a delayed start & a couple of showers during the afternoon.
  • Have we ever won a Test when the opposition have scored 5 hundreds?

Duly bookmarked for if and when the rain comes.

There always has to be someone held culpable for things people on CL do not want to see because it's always that person's fault when it does happen. If I had a pound for each and every time I had said "we look comfortable here" and we then conceded a goal or lost a wicket but was paid a pound when that didn't happen, then I would be in massive profit because superstitious people only ever remember the bad episodes that they think proves their point.

With that in mind, I'm thinking of starting a new thread entitled "All Aboard The Good Ship Charlton Survival". How long before there's a petition to ban me?
  • In any normal era, India would have batted too long,  ensuring that England will just settle for the draw.

With this England team though,  they'll definitely think about going for it
  • Batting positively initially is definitely the sensible thing to do as not sure this team - bar Root and perhaps the skipper - could bat out 90 overs to save a test.

Taking the game to India is the best chance for us to avoid defeat.

  • Double century for Zak tomorrow.

    You heard it here.... B)

I can’t see Zak Chappell getting a double ton for Derbyshire but stranger things have happened!
  • I hope that when play begins today that we don't go full Bazball ( I hate  that expression) from the off.
Play normal cricket for the 1st session and then reassess at lunch.
If we are say 3 wickets down by lunch then play sensible and go for the draw.
If we find ourselves 120 without loss then have a go, but this is a 5 match series and a draw here with some of our best bowlers missing is not a bad result.

I think England are favourites tbh, and they're favourites because of their batting approach

Lord why do you test me?

I've just said I agree with you on another thread and now you post this.

    Mr Jagger, please behave.

I think we've got a very good chance and I wouldn't be surprised if we pulled it off whatsoever. But favourites? Stop it Louis!

Lump on then - 3.40 freely available. Before you do, though, I would check for the cloud cover that might be around. You don't have to be a great fast bowler to be an exponent of such conditions but it helps if you have one in your side that is. And take a check of the wicket for any cracks that Jadeja might expose on a 5th day wicket.

MR READ, I put it to YOU that:

    - India have three bowlers who leaked runs like crazy when the pitch was doing if anything a bit more
    - England bat aggressively down to 9
    - Jadeja has a terrible record in England
    - Bumrah can bowl a maximum of 20, maybe 25 overs today
    - India have caught a case of the dropsies

How are India going to get these wickets?
  • Put it this way, if India win I'd give MOTM to the bowler responsible, not Pant. Especially if said bowler is Bumrah

We will, and please excuse how vulgar this is, wank out at least five wickets today.

There will be someone caught hooking to fine leg, a cloth to mid off, an attempted clip to mid wicket that results in an LBW.

You know the sorts of dismissals I'm talking about.

I mentioned yesterday that I'm optimistic and really think we can do it. But I can't subscribe to "favourites".
  • Whatever happens, it'll be exciting! Every time I think Stokes can't keep getting away with this, he goes and does it

The more I look at the weather the draw looks really tasty at that 3.25 no?
