In 2021 Derby were placed into administration and deducted 21 points, I am not saying the club isnt worth something but better dealing with an administrator than current owner
A football club entering administration goes way beyond what is good for the club though.

Many local businesses/companies will end up out of pocket if they were owed anything by the club, as the rules mean they are not guaranteed being paid.
As shit as it is for local businesses, quite a few clubs that go into administration often come out the other side better off for it.

Palace, Derby, Southampton, Bournemouth, Luton are some that were seriously struggling but came out the other side.
And others, including us way back when Hulyer owned us and the HMRC placed us in admin. As I recall,  it was an anxious time hoping we could find a buyer though, which although highly likely these days is never guaranteed. I don't think we got a points deduction either, 12 being automatic now on entering admin, so not exactly better off in that regard.

It's usually enforced as a last resort to stop the club going out of business and is seldom an option favoured by the owner, who stands to get little back of his outlay. Confident fans will always site examples as you have in making it out to be a desirable outcome, but less high profile clubs have failed, Bury the most recent exception I can think of, Aldershot another in 1992.

Edit - I forgot Wigan, who got relegated after their points deduction but have enjoyed mixed fortunes since.
    We've never been in administration.

    It didn't exist in 1984.
Well spotted 🙄 My bad, as they say these days. Well the HMRC took us to court trying to wind us up then. End result, Hulyer was desperate to find a buyer to rescue the distressed club as he couldn't pay them off, his ship failing to come in on time!
  • Looks like they’re limited to offering new signings ÂŁ7k a week on top of the embargo. That’s really going to hamper them

Plus theres no guarantee they will actually get paid!
  • Just shows you how bad football finances have got when a 7k a week cap is considered a hindrance.

The cap is kind of irrelevant right now anyway because no player in their right mind will sign for them when they're not even paying their current players wages.

The deferred element of that rule (something along the lines of: go into admin before end of March and you take the points hit immediately otherwise you wait until season's end. If you've already been relegated the penalty is held over to next year otherwise it's applied in the current season ... and if that then drops you into the relegation zone then tough titties) was brought in after Leeds took the piss when they got relegated from the Championship.

If I recall correctly that had to get favourable results on the last day but they were away to Ipswich and lost. They pulled the pin on administration about 10 minutes before the end of the game.

  • This will impress players if its true...

I said as much on the previous page.

Chansiri isn't stupid enough to not pay the players who are worth something as then they could legally walk away for free.

Mandaric is no longer interested in getting back into the club.

  • Someone will come in and buy them soon . They are a big club and have massive potential despite many their fans being knobs. It just depends on how awkward Mandaric wants to be .

  • I can see Chansiri relenting eventually but whoever the new owners ultimately are have got one hell of an uphill struggle.

It needs to be resolved pretty quickly though doesn’t it ? How often do we see the sale of a football club drag on and on and then It ultimately falls through or the owners and directors test takes weeks and weeks. How many weeks is it until the first game ? Can Chansiri fund the club until it’s sold and if not what guarantees are there that the club will be able to fulfil its fixtures ? Dealing with Chansiri must be a nightmare. Unless a sale is well progressed already I can see big problems for Wednesday.

The same as dealing with the previous owner of Reading. They also were under a transfer embargo, and did not struggle to stay up.

Ultimately I think he's scuppered this season already. DD , EFL tests etc could be the end of August  before you got all those done. Even with a well progressed deal I think anyone would be up against it.

    What’s the source of this?

Yes. Any new owner would have to have a finance plan that the EFL feels is credible and within the rules. Derby were under  EFL oversight for nearly two seasons when they got new owners. Including a transfer restrictions.

I'd forgotten the finance plan and EFL oversight aspect of it! , makes it an even more difficult deal for a prospective owner to do. Even the most diehard Wednesday fan with the cash to do a deal would find it difficult to navigate.

Wouldn't be surprised if the DD threw up a lot of skeletons in the accounts too.

Just as all the championship jobs are filled I believe now with QPR being the last? Anyone that makes a bad start of the playoff contenders I would guess will be straight after Rohl and SCP.
  • I might be looking at this simplistically, but if they can’t find enough first teamers, would they not just fill the first team squad with youth players?

    Complete mess of a situation

never been the biggest fan of them as a club in recent years, but would hate to see this play out for us, and their fans deserve much better

Have to wonder how long van Nistelrooy will last at Leicester

Also in a bit of a mess I think.  I expect more problems to come out from there in the coming weeks as well.  Nothing on the scale of Wednesday, but got a feeling there’s a lot going on behind the scenes that points to a poor infrastructure and bad ownership

Think they're a mess. Since Vichais death they seem to have got every major appointment wrong and there's a lot of rumours that the owners aren't as wealthy as they were, there's also some PSR stuff hanging over them.

Don't think RvN will make the start of the season , over on Reddit their fans are convinced it will be Dyche.
  • Leicester can’t afford to sack RVN and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a points deduction for them this season

They can sign free transfers and players on loan, they would just need EFL approval first.

Players need to be mad enough to sign though
  • What you don’t want is for us to win points against them, and to have those points wiped off if they go bust.
