You could probably replace them all up there although some will be quite pricy these days

He was exposed to the asbestos while serving on board various ships over his service. The pipes and parts of the ships were lagged with it as a fire retardant. The ships were full of the dust from it. Had he been exposed in a factory or in any industry my mum could have sued and claimed significant compensation for his death. Not as a sailor though. You can’t sue The Crown. As a widow she gets a small top up on her state pension. Still makes me mad now after 25 years.

saw newsnight special the other day where they had veterans from those atomic tests. there was three, two who were there and one who was the son who was there on Christmas island. they have over a hundred different cancers between them. the MOD wont give them the time of day. they ask for their own medical reports and have been fobbed off. They are going to court but it can take years and a lot of the survivors are reaching or into their 90s. the MOD will be using tax payers money to defend itself.

As some of you know I worked in cancer care in a number of hospitals over the years but significantly for this I worked at Kent Cancer Centre at Maidstone Hospital. The highest incidence of Mesothelioma (asbestosis) in the country was seen in Kent. This was a direct consequence of Chatham Dockyard which was a refit base for many RN vessels. The fitters, engineers and many other professions were exposed to asbestos and I agree it’s still a ticking time bomb for many of those employed there. I think it’ll reach its peak about now. Mesothelioma is a horrible disease that turns your diaphragm to concrete.

One of my favourite films and books. Nevil Shutes On the Beach. Set in Australia post nuclear war. They all die in the end.
I believe the threat of nuclear war was greater than now growing up in the 60’s and 70’s. It never bothered me as a kid and not now as I approach retirement. I now I believe it’s only a matter of time before some freak decides to chance his arm.
If we were targeted it would likely kill us all very quickly hopefully, except for the great and the stupid. They will shuffle out of their shelters and die a few months later.

Where do you draw the line though mate ? Times were different then. In the 70’s and 80’s I worked in Woolwich Arsenal and it was openly recognised that some of the chemicals used in some of the explosives were very carcinogenic and to be fair they did give us suits etc to wear but many didn’t bother I often wonder how many people have departed early

Interesting development so thanks for the link. As I previously posted my dad died of an industrial disease (mesothelioma) when he was exposed to asbestos dust while serving in the RN. My mum wasn’t able to sue the RN as you can’t sue the Crown. Perhaps this persons claim is because he was a civilian worker. As I said interesting.

You draw the line for taking responsibility for due care for your employees. The HASAW act (1974) was around then. Many companies including the MOD failed to follow recommendations in that act. principally due to the cost.
Many and i agree short cut the provision of PPE and approved processes, but that doesn't stop the employer being accountable for their actions.
We recently had a case here where a guy lost 50% of his compensation where something hit him on his head falling from a gantry. He wasn't wearing a hard hat in a mandatory hard hat area., lucky to be alive, as it glanced from his head.

Yeah I did that. According to the internet the UK has them. What I read said this:
‘Trident is designed to be a deterrent weapon of last resort. Essentially it seems to be about degrees of destructive power. I reads like enough to destroy the planet, up to enough to destroy the planet hundreds of times over.
One part of the argument seems to be that if people think they can use nuclear weapons in a ‘limited’ way, then there will be more temptation to use them.

We used to duck round it as it was quicker to do that than go round it. The stainless steel cooling pipes used to just sit on the dockside before removal. We often queried this but they used to say its fine as it hadn't been in contact with the core...mmm.
