All good points, but perhaps NJ feels we still need to sign players with actual Championship experience, rather than just potential?Steven81 said:
Can only hope but the only worry for me is these two players were attainable at reasonable prices and would have improved us but we didn't want to push the boat out a little, players that are better than these and are championship proven or a level above will be 2/3 times their price so unless we stop being tight or have a bigger budget than we thought then fair enough but I can't see it tbh.Oggy Red said:
I'm not too disappointed though.Davo55 said:I'm not going to lie, I'm disappointed that we were haven't been able to sign Galbraith and Offiah.
But I'm happy with the business so far and have confidence that Charlton is now an attractive proposition for the kind of players we need to bring in.
Maybe they would have been good signings - but they were both Third Division players last season, and unproven at Championship level.
So were most of those in our team.
NJ has been telling us he wants to do more than just survive relegation and be competitive.
Perhaps our current targets played last season at a higher level than the Third Division? 🤔

I think they are in for testing today and tomorrow but actual pre-season starts Monday.charltonbob said:

If we sign a RWB near the end of the window who we’re not convinced by then maybe that’s right. But let’s see what happens, it’s also possible a target we prefer has become available. I’ll be surprised if we don’t sign a few more over the next week or so.Steven81 said:
Massive outlay sorry mate two players were in for but wouldn't pay a little more it's ok end of the window we might get our plan B and C in or some loans maybe to cover it in sure Mr 5000 millions will stretch a bit more hopefully : ))000__Jaaaaay__000 said:
‘Stop being tight’ this after dropping 1.5 and 1 million on two players. Baffling what people come out with sometimes 😆Steven81 said:

My reading is not so much that we have either a large or small budget (it could be either or maybe somewhere in between) so much as we are being very definite on valuations.
If there is a player we want, there will be an amount we are willing to pay, if they want more or we get outbid we move on. Not getting trapped into bidding wars or trying to throw money around for its own sake.
The size of the hypothetical budget isn't really that important, it's more about getting the maximum value for whatever amount it turns out to be.27 -
That just happened, so what?
We save on the fee, and less clutter in front of Zach Mitchell.2 -
Small wasn't a conventional RWB anyway, as in attack he was more of an inverted winger much of the time.3
-
Let's see at the end of the season whether they're good signings. This time last year Rotherham had signed a few players and the season wasn't too good.J BLOCK said:Concerning that Preston are making good signings and they're a team you'd think would be amongst the bottom cohort next season.3 -

Gutted about Offiah. Think he’s going to prove an excellent signing and will really kick on. Whoever comes in at right back/wing back best be bloody quality.13

So looking at Doc today, looks like they've been wearing https://www.whoop.com/gb/en/ for the summerRothko said:
Do you think the players have been doing nothing since the end of May. They are probably all wearing Apple Watches, uploading the data to the club, were giving things like connected scales which will upload data to the club as well. I know our season finished late, and today and tomorrow will be punishingly and maybe dangerously hot, but reporting back next Monday only gives us five weeks to get sorted before the first game.
We rely on being super fit compared with other teams, I hope five weeks is long enough for us to be ready.1 -
Yan Valery from Wednesday may be possible if their plight continues.. I know several players have handed in notices.0
-
Kanu loan clearly not done as he’s in the back of one of the training photos on Facebook0
-
Valery would be a good option, very pacey and would replace Thierry well in that his final ball is also a bit...hit and miss shall we say1

Good replica for Small thenYannTheMann said:Valery would be a good option, very pacey and would replace Thierry well in that his final ball is also a bit...hit and miss shall we say0 -
Prove it! I want a selfie of you wedged in that bush with your trusty Nokia 9010 — and while you’re at it, send over snaps of the players in the third kit too!RonnieMoore said:Charlton players are back at sparrows lane today …4 -
I don't think any club in the world except Real Madrid always gets their plan A.Steven81 said:

We're a newly promoted Championship club with one of the lowest budgets in the division. We're quite clearly not going to sign every one of our targets.
That's if he even was a target, because someone has posted to say we stopped pursuing him a while back. And we don't even know why that was.1 -
NJ might know Valery from his time at Southampton0
-
I wonder what stopped our interest in him. Someone else not on the CL radar maybe now available or shifting of budget priorities elsewhere ?ButtleJR said:
I'm told we stopped pursuing him prior to Preston coming in for him so I'd say that's incorrect.Steven81 said:Getting mugged over by Preston nice0 -

He did look great against us. He was a wrecking ball charging down the right flank. Of course, for him to stand out at a higher level at wing back he'd need good technical ability, and for him to stand out at centre back he'd need great defensive awareness.Sage said:Gutted about Offiah. Couldn't make a judgement on those things from what we saw. Hopefully our scouts decided he wasn't good enough rather than Preston were a bigger draw.0 -
NJ has called him and asked "why don't you come on over, Valery?"PWADDICK said:NJ might know Valery from his time at Southampton37 -

Someone like him on a free could make sense - 26 so could still have his best years to come, and that £1m fee that Offiah would have cost can instead be added to what we were looking to spend on central midfielder or striker, where quality can be harder to find and a lot more expensive.John_Fitzpatrick1 said:Yan Valery from Wednesday may be possible if their plight continues.. Horrified to realise Valery is only 26. I could have sworn he's been around forever1

Hopefully, he’ll help us win a lot.82Stu said:

Maybe he does, but I would say that over recent seasons we have got better value for money buying players from clubs below us than from clubs above us. Successes and failures from both directions, but the failures from above have cost us a lot more.

There still a long way to go before the window shuts players that are hard to get now may become available closer to the end of August … as we get told year in year out patience ….1
