Which wasn’t how it played out last year at all. We signed most before the Slovenia trip, and added Dixon, Potts and Allan Campbell late in the window, none of which turned out to be important signings for us.RonnieMoore said:There still a long way to go before the window shuts players that are hard to get now may become available closer to the end of August … as we get told year in year out patience ….
I expect NJ will want those key signings done fairly soon, before this years Slovenia trip.2 -

Why do people assume a free transfer doesn’t cost anything? All it means is, you’re paying the player and his agent a bigger signing-on fee.Scoham said:
Someone like him on a free could make sense - 26 so could still have his best years to come, and that £1m fee that Offiah would have cost can instead be added to what we were looking to spend on central midfielder or striker, where quality can be harder to find and a lot more expensive.John_Fitzpatrick1 said:Yan Valery from Wednesday may be possible if their plight continues.. I know several players have handed in notices.4 -
As someone who isn’t in the know, although a family friend is an ex player and coach in the Championship, I’m only seeing the ITK’s post about mostly English/Scottish clubs.Do you think there are a few unknowns we are seriously looking at abroad? Normally cheaper than the inflated prices here.1

Of course, I never said it wouldn’t cost anything, but if you pay £1m+ it’s going to come with a good wage, a long term contract and probably a decent signing on fee too.AddicksAddict said:

A free agent might work out cheaper for us - I only meant it was a possible explanation for us dropping our interest in Offiah.3 -
Might even have pulled up there and going back in for more!Scoham said:
Maybe enjoyed living up there after his loan with Blackpool.ShootersHillGuru said:
Sounds like a better package for the player then.Danny Addick said:He was definitely coming to us at one point
As said, Kaminski and Olaofe coming in shows we’re paying decent wages, especially Kaminski, and Preston aren’t big payers, so I doubt we’d have been miles off if at all.3 -
Is someone signing this afternoon?0

TBH i don't have any further info atm i'm afraid - if i get told something by somebody i trust that its done then i will put it on here - (ignore Henry Irving's silly comment on the Tanto thread)John_Fitzpatrick1 said:Doucher give us some hope!4 -
I wouldn't be surprised. The championship is trending that way in terms of finding "better value" in Europe. I guess as a newly promoted side it's slightly more of a risk to look to Europe but I trust NJ to know what's going to work best for the budget he's got.Photollery said:As someone who isn’t in the know, although a family friend is an ex player and coach in the Championship, I’m only seeing the ITK’s post about mostly English/Scottish clubs.Do you think there are a few unknowns we are seriously looking at abroad? I think we had quite a lot more to do last year though. We basically had to bring in a whole new team and hammer into them a style and an ethos. Even the existing players only had a make do and mend half season of survival to go by. Everyone was starting over. It will be easier to integrate new players later into a very settled dynamic and a style that has been drilled into most of the players for a whole season. Ideally we'd get the players in ahead of the trip but I don't think it's quite as urgent as it was last time round, and given the jump in league quality if we have to wait for the right players I think that's the better play.Scoham said:

They're the typical 12-16th most years side , a good year they'll be edge of the playoffs. Not someone I'd massively feardoronron said:
Think the are a bog standard Championship team ,sometimes they are up there challenging for middle to top sixJ BLOCK said:Concerning that Preston are making good signings and they're a team you'd think would be amongst the bottom cohort next season.0 -

Why don’t you come on over, Valery?John_Fitzpatrick1 said:Yan Valery from Wednesday may be possible if their plight continues.. I know several players have handed in notices.0 -
Wouldn't expect any announcements/press releases from anywhere today after the tragic Jota news.Redrobo said:Is someone signing this afternoon?

Sure, but NJ will know we need more experience in the squad, especially to help establish the team in the Championship.wolfgang said:Oggy Red said:All good points, but perhaps NJ feels we still need to sign players with actual Championship experience, rather than just potential?
Maybe he does, but I would say that over recent seasons we have got better value for money buying players from clubs below us than from clubs above us. Successes and failures from both directions, but the failures from above have cost us a lot more.
Plus NJ has already told us he first looks for the right character, then athleticism, before considering ability.
Remember, new signings have to fit NJ's ethos and be able to upgrade the squad.
Some potential signings will be found not to tick all 3 boxes.

He is still our contracted player, maybe we wanted him in today for the assessments?fenaddick said:Kanu loan clearly not done as he’s in the back of one of the training photos on Facebook2 -

Yeah I've seen no signings really at all today and only a couple of prearranged kit announcementsbobmunro said:golfaddick said:

Gutted about Galbraith and Offiah TBF, both really exciting players with great pedigree. But onwards we go and excited to hear who our next few signings will be.
It feels we are a bit behind where I suspect NJ would want us to be but they will all be working very hard.5 -
Berry a partial failure..? Really?34

Sorry, guys, got interrupted and then f*ked this up. Somehow deleted the successes from from clubs above. Have been unable to edit ir delete it. So please ignore.wolfgang said:wolfgang said:

Kirk signed from below us didn't he?6

Kirk? Disaster, yes, but were Crewe ever above us?0

I think he was beamed up from L2North Lower Neil said:Kirk signed from below us didn't he?6 -
I'm not sure the comparison of players from clubs below and above is particularly informative. First of all, where's Godden gone? He is definitely a success. Where do you put Edwards - below or above us? Additionally, players who are not first-teamers for clubs above us are generally below/level with League One standard.2

Yes, he did, from Crewe. Sorry. Got in a muddle with the technology and started panicking. Ignore my post. I will go and lie down with a cold flannel on my brow.North Lower Neil said:Kirk signed from below us didn't he?4 -
