This was Emmas best performance for a long time, sure she let some winning positions slip, but Sabelenka is the worlds no.1 for a reason. She hopefully can play a few more tournements, get some ranking points and climb back to the top 10,thereby getting seeded and avoid the big names in the early rounds.Norrie looked really good, kept calm after the early onslaught and won in a canter in the end, dont know much about his next opponent but he could well make the last 8.
Personally, I'm not sure about top 10. Top 32 or even top 20 would be more realistic.
Needs to stay injury free and be more consistent. After her performance yesterday, I'm hopeful of a good hard court season
You are probably right, but I am forever the optimist ,and I thought I saw enough there in Emmas play ,if she has an injury free run ,to really get some good results. She did have Sabelenka on the run at times but just could not keep up the level required.
It was all about Jack Draper in the men's for British tennis fans but Cam Norrie who had lost his form until recently has gone under the radar and is having a great Wimbledon and has an even's chance against the Chilean Jarry. Norrie has no big weapons but is a super athlete and is back on his game so will battle to the end.
Overtakes Fearnley in rankings so back to British no 2.

Jacob Fearnley had an amazing year since leaving USA college tennis but suddenly had some technical issues with his serve in the last couple of tournaments.

Has been serving very poorly of late. A lot of his ranking points were gained in Challenger events around this time last year - a good chance he will drop down the rankings unless he sorts his serve out.

I think it is difficult for any player who has had a sudden rise to sustain it. Partially because they have to adapt to the new levels - akin to a 'steep learning curve'. I think Draper's rise has flattered him slightly as he still has a lot to learn - not sure why his team didn't advise him to change his tactics against Cilic.
Raducanu and of course Kartal too are still learning. With so much time out, Raducanu is still catching up with her age - and she isn't a product of a tennis academy and was only paying 8 hours tennis a week (apparently) when she made her break through at Wimbledon after doing her A levels
Mad scenes in the Kartal match where the electronic line calling system fails so a ball that was clearly long has meant that the point has to be replayed

And Kartal ends up winning to break serve and is 5-4 up instead of 5-4 down

Kartel wins a game she surely lost. Why couldn't the umpire over rule ? Did he not see on the monitor that the ball was way out ?
Much as I'd like Kartal to win, that decision was ridiculous. The umpire saw it was out, the video showed it was out, no wonder pavlyuchenkova is upset
Players are rightly commenting the technology or at least the use of it when there is an error needs improving.
This was a clear error. And my impact the result of the match. Kartal could have done on to win the first set if she'd held her serve. But Pavlyuchenkova could easily have changed mindset because of being wronged.
Hopefully Sonay can put it behind her, she is a clam and measured player after all
What I don't get is why the move to fully automated calls seemed a good idea to anyone? As far as I'm aware no one was complaining about the challenge system

If the umpire had said replay the point to the Russian male players, Medvedev or Rublev they would've rocked him out of his high chair !

Can you imagine how Djokovic would have dealt with it if had landed a foot out in front of him?!
Being the best athlete I thought Kartal would move Pavlyuchenkova about more. Sonny's serve will have to improve a lot if she wants to be a Top 30 player. A good competitor so she will keep running and chasing.

😂Sonny then has her best serving game to love.
Can't see him throwing it now unless Jarry gets a third wind
