England need 608 to win :-)
8-3 at stumps tonight.  200 per session tomorrow.  Easy.
I hope we don't get robbed of victory today by the rain. Because we're miles ahead of this target.
  • From the press today it looks like our bowling attack is going to be changed completely for the next Test.. Cook, Atkinson, Bethell and Archer, for Woakes, Tongue, Bashir, Carse.

The current attack have bowled a lot of overs. But bringing in two players who have just returned from injury is a big risk.
  • Yes the modern game with back to back tests required rotation, but changing all 4 bowlers is still a bizarre looking move.

Picking Bethell as the main spinner feels ridiculously premature, even if it'll massively improve our batting. He's not a frontline red ball spinner. And a bit confusing too, as he's in the red ball set up as a top order bat who can bowl a bit. It would be like calling up Dan Lawrence as the main spinner.

Other than the obvious Dawson, why not Rehan Ahmed. As a leggie, at least he'll offer something different with the ball, plus his batting has come on massively.
  • Ahmed is maybe Leicestershire's 9th choice bowler these days. I'm going to gas up Calvin Harrison as a leftfield spin pick of the near future. Remember, I did call Bashir...

Calvin Harrison would be an interesting one! Offers a bit with the bat too. Notts related spinner wise I don't know what's happened to Liam Patterson-White
  • Hopefully it continues to rain for at least 6 more hours

Atkinson and Archer are massive fitness risks too. You can easily imagine one of them having an issue after the first day of bowling.

LPW has seemingly found his feet again of late, he'll need a whole season showing he can do it before he's taken seriously as an international prospect though. Notts at least do seem to take spin seriously as they're playing two frontline spinners in every game

Felt like around those 2 COVID seasons where they were throwing caps around that LPW had quite a bit of England hype. If he can get back to that form he'll be in the mix.

  • Do have sympathy for Bashir. The pitches played on don’t help young spinners learn and unless you have something with the bat (like Ahmed and Dawson) it’s hard to force your way into playing enough to learn. As a result he’s learning playing the hardest form of the game and it’s hard to see a county team to take him now. He’ll end up learning in Lions games instead

What happened to Matt Parkinson? Joined Kent and completely fallen off the radar. Was by far the best English spinner in the country for a while.

Quite frankly he’s crap, even in Div 2
  • Play starts in little over 10 mins with 10 overs lost
  • Bashir is a great player when the conditions suit spinners, as he bowls wicket taking deliveries. You definitely want him in the sub continent.

The problem is that when the conditions aren't helpful, he offers very little. He leaks runs, can't bat and isn't brilliant in the field. It's notable how few games the legendary Ravi Ashwin played in this country, as India usually went for the all rounder Jadeja, who offered more elsewhere when you can only pick one spinner.
  • Let’s hope Pope and Brook can find some damp patches in the outfield to aim for
  • All over before lunch?

The 2.30pm lunch  ?   Yes, very probably.
  • 83/5.

Wasn't that the score Smith came in on the other day ?
  • To think everyone thought that bringing in Akash for Bumrah would massively weaken India...

IF England can survive until say 2pm, the ball will have got softer and batting will then become easier. But no benefit if it's Woakes and Carse at the crease.
  • Stokes and Smith did so well until that last over
  • Great play by India there. Jadeja rushing through his over so that they got another over before lunch. Stokes had a nightmare against Jadeja with all that rough outside his off stump. If only he had batted first...
  • Against spin, Stokes looks fragile. The rough patches outside his off stump has caused him no end of trouble. I think we will be bowled out in fifteen overs.
  • If only we could slow down the over rate until stumps at 7pm.

But no, even if the amended 7pm close of play comes along we will play until the minimum 15 overs in the last hour (assuming that is at 6pm) are bowled.

Someone please explain why no one cares if only 85 overs are bowled in the first 4 days but on the 5th day suddenly we will play past 7pm just because we HAVE  to bowl 90 overs on the last day.

    Makes no sense.

(And PS.....I do understand the rain delay has shortened today to a minimum 80 overs)

Siraj is so unlikeable it’s crazy
  • This is now a good test of Smith's ability to play WITH the tail. It's no use Smith scoring boundaries and looking untroubled at one end, if he allows too many balls to be bowled at the tailenders with him. He has to milk the strike, even if it means taking singles instead of boundaries.
  • Great review from Smith
  • Shocking decision by the umpire. That's why you don't burn reviews, as you need them for the occasional howler.
  • Sheer stupidity from Smith, absolutely no need to go again
