So sorry to hear your sad news. Just remember the good times and that you have given him a good home and a loving environment especially after him not having the best start in life. RIP Gilbert.
RIP Gilbert I know exactly what you are going through, we had to have our beloved Lily put to sleep yesterday, she was 15 but had stopped eating and lost all energy she had, she was a puppy farm dog and very wary of people but we got her round, it has slaughtered the wife and me
I was livid when my wife bought home a puppy because I knew one day I will be devastated like you are today, RIP Gilbert . Take comfort that you gave him a good life
My beautiful boy went to sleep late Wednesday afternoon 16/07/25. His Kidneys had failed and though it was the right decision to end any suffering, I just wanted to keep him forever.
He was a rescue and 4 years old when I got him, he’d had two previous owners and he’d been treated badly. It took a long time to win him over and bond but thankfully we did and I’m so grateful for the time we had together.
He would have been about 8 years old in the pics and in the last few months, he was a shadow of his vibrant, lively and lovely self, that in itself was so pitiful to witness.
Looks like my Bracken, who we lost at 17, a tri colour Border collie. It's never easy. You brought Gilbert into your family and gave him a loving home. Chase those rabbits and herd those sheep in the sky. So sorry for your loss.
RIP Gilbert. Losing your constant companion is awful, but you gave him a wonderful life after the hardships he experienced early on, thank you for being a good person.
RIP Gilbert. Dogs are the best friends we can possibly have. They know how much they are loved and love us back. Gilbert will have known this till the end.
I've had so many rescues, waifs and strays over the years. Never given up on any, despite some challenges. They always give so much more to us than we ever can in return. The loyalty and love is unrelenting and when it goes out of your life it is beyond despair. But it does end. An empty home means there is now room in your heart. Every mutt deserves to have a life with people who are so devoted and caring.
One of the hardest goodbyes we ever go through, family & friends mean everything, but it’s just something about our dogglies that makes it that much harder to get over…RIP Gilbert & Lilly,if ya bump into a little blue chihuahua named Buddy,he was only a pup,but I’m sure he will show u the way,RIP all our rainbow friends xx
I thought I needed to grieve alone but seeing all your lovely, wonderful and supportive comments, has made me realise grief can be shared and while it won’t bring Gilbert back, it is important to talk about it. Thanks again.
What a relief. When I read that first sentence I thought the OP had lost his son.
I know losing a pet can be tough but the thread is a bit misleading. I told my wife that someone on here had lost his son before I’d scrolled down to the photos, and she told me of a emergency in the hospital where a 19 year old road worker had a truckload of 200 degree bitumen fall on him from the truck and he died of 1st degree burns.
I’m sorry to hear of your loss, Sillav. When my Chinese water dragon (Bob) was put down, I cried for a week. The upside was the vivarium stopped blowing the electrical circuit.

As @largeaddick said he was my son. All my dogs have been family.

I can only echo what others have said, well done for giving these lovely dogs a happy home and I know they more than repaid you.
