Deadline Day from Pg.641 - Summer 2025 Charlton Athletic Transfer Rumours

I've been rather quite on this thread this window but can I finally say.......I think we might just have made some decent signings for once.
No idea how they will all fit in & team selection will be a nightmare. But that's not my problem !
24 -
Cawley saying the the Kelman fee is around 3m.
So are we therefore assuming the 3.5m rising to 5m with add ons that Fabrizio reported is total bollocks?7 -
I'm sure if we made very few signings you would have posted more frequently : )1
-
The narrative of "our targets are the same no matter the league" was to play down the Wembley game imo, and how massive it actually was for our transfer window.Chris_from_Sidcup said:
Kelman - No chance as we wouldn't have spent the money.ForeverAddickted said:Given how Jones said we'd picked our targets regardless if we were a Championship or League One club next season... You have to wonder
(1) Who wouldn't have joined us had we not gone up, from the current group of signings.
(2) If we were spending this sort of money in League One next season, we'd surely have gone up.
Apter - same as above.
Kaminski - same as above, plus Mannion was fine for league 1.
Olaofe - maybe could've got him but if there were Championship clubs interested then i doubt it.
JRC - probably wouldn't have dropped down a league.
Carey - i think he was a done deal regardless of the division.
Bell/Burke - may well have signed regardless because of the connection with Jones.
Not a chance these would have been attainable targets in league 1. That promotion has changed our trajectory.
We would be without Ramsay and TC at a minimum, and would have signed maybe Carey and the ex-Luton lads at a push. No chance we land Kelman, Apter and are in for Knibbs.11 -
Well done all involved this transfer window definitely no lack of ambition at the club at the moment. COYR’s!!4

If I remember right, at the time Dowie was appointed, there was a new TV deal agreed - with significantly increased payments to Prem League clubs. The Red Robin said:

Justifying our big spending, didn't Richard Murray say something along the lines that it was' vital Charlton stayed in the Prem'?
We all know how that turned out.

Exciting transfer window but bookies still have us to be relegated0

This is probably not helping the discussion, but, yes Dowie was a shit manager, but remember Richard Murray's role in all of this. Richard Murray brought someone in to pick the incoming players and deal with the transfers, Billy Davies turned down the Charlton manager position because of this set up, and that set up didn't change under Dowie, it rather suits a certain individual to lay all the blame at Dowie's door, especially when he was the one who employed him, much to the annoyance and against the advice of fellow directors.wmcf123 said:
He was hugely overweight in the premier league and hardly played. Good in the championship until he wanted to move in January. Talented, yes .TeeC said:
Andy Reid was most certainly not crap. Wonderful footballer. Gets in pretty much any charlton team over the past 20 years.wmcf123 said:
They were all crap apart from Carson too, and yes I include the perennially unfit and overweight, albeit very talented Andy Reid in thatForeverAddickted said:
Didn't Curbs see Murray after that window, and jokingly complain that he never got given those sort of funds? The Red Robin said:

Yes, Murray said the next tv Prem deal was going to be massive so that coming season was not the one to get relegated in.Oggy Red said:

So then he appointed Dowie to get back at Simon Jordan. The rest, as the say, is history.9 -
I think the new deal came in the season after Dowie’s appointment. The money they gave him was an attempt to ensure we stayed in the Prem for when it kicked in. The rest is history…Oggy Red said:

Including add-ons, £12m probably what all the deals in total could be worth.Scoham said:
We’ll have spent around that this summer if we get Knibbs, and maybe over it if we sign 1 or 2 more.robroy said:

But most of the fees will be paid in instalments spread over the length of each contract.
Only the instalments so far actually paid will be included in this year's accounts.

The massive increase in the budget is nothing to do with Scott or Chapple, they just deal with the budget they are given.MarcusH26 said:
Would expect it's probably got a lot to do with Gavin Carter now being their man on the ground and getting Chapple in to replace Andy Scott.Braziliance said:
You joke, but two seasons ago we would have been the club selling Kelman and bringing in Ahadme.jose said:They had to sign Kelman to make up for the disappointment of losing Ahadme.
Whoever is responsible for steering the new owners in the right direction and splashing the cash is a God.
Indeed NJ has surely driven nearly all these signings, considering the number who either played against us in L1 or played for him at Luton.2 -
And Murray was letting Curbishley still chose the players to sign like Hasslebank after he left .. Dowie had no say in transfers ….. plus Murray did not put a relegation clause into any of the contracts , hence the reason you had players like Marcus Bent on 22k a week sitting in the stands for 18 months …Bailey said:

Curbs had no say after he left.
Dowie had too much say, signing players from agents he was "mates" with. I wonder why?
M Bent was never on £22k a week. I still have the spreadsheet of the wages from that time at home somewhere. No one was on that much.18 -
The massive increase in budget is because we will make at least £10m more this season in revenue. If we hadn’t been promoted, I would assume the budget would have been pretty similar to last seasons. Plus if we didn’t spend like this we’d likely be heading straight back to league 1 so it was a no brainerkillerandflash said:

Reading between the lines here, maybe if that bid was true, we did it to beat off (don't post the gif ffs) Portsmouth & Wrexhams interest?
2.5 million if true is a great return for Reading who picked him up on a free, but he does really improve us and we could do with his goals. I think it's good value for us both.
I've asked Rich on twitter and he hasn't denied it yet, which I now see as a good sign when he goes quiet.8 -
I bet QPR upped the price of Kelman to gain revenge for us selling them Macauley Bonne for 2.5 million.3
