Why did Kyoto Sanga reject Shinnosuke Fukuda’s move to England?
As Charlton Athletic, newly promoted to the EFL Championship (England’s second tier), work to reinforce their squad for the 2025/26 season, it appears they had been pursuing the signing of a Japanese player. Having returned to the Championship for the first time since being relegated in the 2019/20 season, Charlton have already brought in seven new signings during the 2025 summer transfer window, steadily strengthening their team.
According to UK media outlet Daily Mail, Charlton approached J1 side Kyoto Sanga with a proposal to sign defender Shinnosuke Fukuda on a loan deal with an option to buy. However, Kyoto rejected the offer.
Kyoto’s stance is that they are only willing to part with the player in a permanent transfer, and Fukuda’s contract reportedly includes a release clause of £800,000 (around ¥160 million). Unless this amount is paid in full, it seems difficult for negotiations to move forward.
Fukuda, currently 24 years old, has made 21 J1 appearances so far this 2025 season. As of the end of Matchday 24, Kyoto sit in 4th place—just 4 points behind the league leaders and within reach of the title. Fukuda has recorded 3 goals and 1 assist in all competitions this season, marking the best form of his career to date.
The media also reports that Fukuda sees playing in Europe as a necessary step toward making Japan’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He has yet to receive a senior national team call-up.
Charlton, for their part, have been actively recruiting various players this summer as they look to solidify their place in the Championship.
Latest piece in Japanese media regarding Fukuda. Doesn’t give away anything we didn’t already know from other articles.
I saw him play a few weeks back and picked him out as one of the two best players on the pitch. He scored and looked head and shoulders better than all but a Brazilian forward they also had. I'm never sure about the quality of J league, but he's definitely a tidy player.

Reckon we may try to get Lembikisa on a 6 month loan deal and then go back in for him in January
Appreciate the ITK input and understand it’s a balance - but I wonder if we’d have been better off not knowing anything. One of those where ideally it’s all the info or nothing.
Agree - nothing bad intended but thread derailed now.
We have binned off Dane Murphy apparently. That’s the announcement tomorrow
"The appointment is subject to the completion of the EFL Owners and Directors’ Test and the appropriate documentation."
Maybe relevant if so?
Tbf if that is the bad news can’t miss what u have realistically never had. He looked very promising but knowing the owners they will easily find someone just as good. Be surprised if he did fail the test considering his stints at Barnsley and forest personally think if he has gone there was probably conflicting ideas about recruitment between him and Chapple/Jones
This is like an alternate universe reading tweets like this.
While this is lovely to read and gets us all excited I have to remind myself that points are won and lost on the pitch, not during the transfer window.
These comments, at their most extreme, can make it sound like we are home and hosed in terms of safety while Preston have a mountain to climb to stay up.
In reality, I’m willing to bet now that there is a gap of 10 points or fewer between the two teams when May 2026 comes around.

It’s more likely to do with his entanglements at AZ Alkmaar.

Thinking aloud, will be interesting to see how we handle Knibbs tomorrow. In the event there is this sensitive announcement, it doesnt mean to say that he hasnt signed. Just that they dont want to announce it.
But then if he has signed, NJ will want him involved at Ipswich. They may delay the social media video for 24 hours, but no reason not to play him in a game.

He not been able to sell his shares in another club which means he can’t past the EFL tests …. Not sure this is sensitive news or how it stops a player announcement ?
Without meaning any disrespect to Redmidland (if indeed the sensitivity issue is for him), they could just announce Knibbs early, post the photos, comments etc, and then focus the rest of the day to RM.
They're renaming The Valley due to sponsorship rights being sold, which is something that needs to be done to help pay for all the signings but no doubt everyone on here will still be up in arms about it...

Hope not besides his Jamaica highlights he's looked poor in the trials/friendlies would weaken the team imo.

Maybe because of why he can’t sell them. All looking very messy.

Hasn't looked worth while yet
I’m not sure any of them have excelled. I think tonight is when we can get a better idea of how they are. Ipswich will be a better test. id imagine it’s now playing for places time

I’m not sure if having shares in another club abroad impacts the director test. I’d be shocked if it’s Murphy as I’m sure the club would have done its own due diligence on the situation.
I can’t see why the CEO news would stop us announcing Knibbs. Get that out of the way this morning and then positive news late afternoon. what will be will be though.
